Note: While disabling/removing these apps seems to be safe, unforeseen consequences may be possible.

Now that we have a custom recovery, I suggest making a backup in Twrp, before deleting/freezing/Hiding apps

There are a few ways to stop bloatware from running

Non root

Root

BackupApp Locations

  • System apps can be found in
    /system/apps
    /system/priv-app
Each app is in it's own folder, the app will have the .apk file extension

Stock Launcher
Before you remove the Stock Launcher, be sure you have at least one other Launcher installed, or the devices will not work correctly.
If you want Google Now Launcher, I suggest installing a 2nd launcher as a backup, as Now launcher can be a little tricky getting it to Launch the first time.

  • Google Services Framwork
  • Google Play Store
  • Google Partner Setup

Using Titanium Backup with PRO Key
Requires Root
If you want to backup to SD Card (external) use one of these
Create a Folder on external SD Card (/mnt/sdcard2 or /storagesdcard1)
  • TitaniumBackup (one word, no space)

Install both

Open Titanium Backup
  • 3 options on top right: Search, Batch, Menu
  • 3 tabs: Overview, Backup/Restore, Schedules

Select Menu/Preferences
[*]Max backup history: default is 1 backup which is fine for most, but change is you want more than one back up versions, useful if you deside you liked an older app version better.
[*]Compression: the more compression the long to backup, the less compression, more storage is used.
Backup folder location: tap storage provider: Filesystem (click to change)
filesystem storage - Ext. SD card (mnt/sdcard2 or /storage/sdcard1)
Select Titaniumbackup folder
Select Use the current Folder
may need to use back button to exit, so titanium reboots
after app reboots,
Backup directory should be: /mnt/sdcard2/TitaniumBackup[/List]

Backup/Restore tab
Tap on an app: Backup, Freeze, Un-install, Wipe Data, Delete, Restore
long press an app: special features, inducing convert to system or user app

Batch option top right between search and menu
Batch: Verify backups, Backup, Restore, Defrost

Not finding updates to freeze

I installed google play last week using Amazon-Fire-5th-Gen-Install-Play-Store.zip. I rooted just now so I could block updates but I am not finding these three listed in TitaniumBU:
com.amazon.device.software.ota
com.amazon.settings.systemupdates
com.amazon.device.software.ota

Would those have been deleted with last weeks version of the play store.zip I noticed blocking OTA is now listed on the .zip, I don't recall seeing it last week tho. I just want to make sure to kill the proper OTA updates.

I've read thru the system options to freeze in TBU and I see some called:
"DeviceSoftwareOTA 6.0.188.0_6037810",
"com.amazon.otaverifier 5.1-37.5.2.2_user_522054520", and
"system updates 1.0.78.0_20210"
but I don't have nearly enough knowledge to know what exactly those mean. I have wifi turned off for now just to be sure nothing sneaks thru.

Thanks!

You don't, because the next update will more than likely remove the method we used to get root working.

should just enabled ota apks
and wait for the update to download
or if we have the update.bin file it could be installed with recovery's sideload option

Please add com.amazon.mp3, com.android.inputmethod.pinyin, com.android.inputmethod.latin and jp.co.omronsoft.iwnnime.mlaz. The first is Amazon Music, the others are Fire Keyboards (Replaced with Google Keyboard)

It doesn't make sense to remove the only keyboard available, unless you replace it with another. It seems pretty irresponsible to call that "bloat".

could someone help me? I'm browsing through the files and can't find 2 of them

com.amazon.settings.systemupdates
com.amazon.device.software.ota | DeviceSoftwareOTA | 6.0.188.0_6037810

I found com.amazon.otaverifier under /system/app but the others aren't anywhere to be found. I want to remove them so I can't get screwed with updates.

would appreciate any help.

Well at this point I have practically nothing left so it is so close to perfect or plain vanilla android that I don't want to give up now. It has become a challenge to see just how little I can leave and still have a functional device as bare bones as is possible. And with all that stuff gone this thing is really kinda nice. Fast and empty. Pretty powerful I would imagine because it was designed to run so much more and since it is now running so much less it has power to spare.

If I could just get a little more info on these 4 I think I'd be done because these are the only 4 that seem to using resources and I feel might not be needed. But I can find zero info at all on them:

    Auto Timezone Service [com.amazon.kindleautomatictimezone]
    SecuritySyncClient [com.amazon.securitysyncclient]
    Dynamic Updation Service [com.amazon.dynamicupdationservice]
Factory Data Reset Whitelist Manager [com.amazon.platform.fdrw]

Then I will be able ot publish the definitive list of what can and cannot be turned off :fingers-crossed:
    1
I use App Quarantine (free) to "freeze" apps.
    1
Apps that only work with certain versions

    IMDB
For Stock rom use IMDB from Amazon store
For Custom Roms use IMDB from Google store/ apkmirror.com

I just got the Fire tablet with 5.4.0.1. Can i sideload titanium backup and uninstall any apps?
