Will not boot after flashing any kernels

I flashed an elementalx and bulletproof kernel but each time I do and reboot the screen just turns black and I have to go into recovery and recover a backup.
I'm rooted, unlocked, and s-on. I've flashed kernels before but this never happened.

Well which kernel (version) for which ROM?

I've tried bulletproof 8.1 and elementalx 8.4 both on Insertcoin for sense 5.5 and android 4.3.
