These recent threads from XDA, and even more especially the tone from the XDA headline postings disgusts me. I thought XDA stood against piracy, but it's clear they don't. What's worse is that when Samsung blocks based on build.props, the attitude is that it's a "bug" to be "fixed". I can't even believe Engadget is getting on this train too.

Android is the first realistic open platform we have ever had for mobile devices, and things like this are ruining it. With openness comes respect, yes we can root our phones and get APKs and modify very easily the platform, unlike iOS or Windows Mobile. The respect is that you don't just rip everything out of whatever ROM comes along.

This is a Samsung proprietary app. It is 100% piracy, plain and simple. I get it if people just want to try out an app for personal curiosity and educational purposes for a short time. But this is far, far different. First of all this is a network-based service, so you are causing load, denying service to legitimate users who have paid (through the purchase of Samsung hardware) for this service, and causing extra costs on Samsung. This isn't like stealing cable, it's like stealing cell phone service from AT&T and talking on the phone all day without paying a dime. And when an attempt comes to stop it, not really a true lockdown but more like a signal "hey, guys, please stop it, this is for S3 people" you not only workaround it but spit in Samsung's face with the attitude "OMG WHY DID SAMSUNG BREAK MY S-VOICE!?!?! HOW DO WE FIX IT?!?" It's not your service to use!

This is why we can't have good things. These actions are seriously hurting the Android open source community and even the free software community. It makes the community look like a bunch of assholes. It's hurting the ability for us to mod our devices. The only rational response to all of this is for the OEMs to further lock down bootloaders, add encryption, prevent root access, remove ADB and developer access, etc. And to be honest, I can't blame them anymore. Not after seeing the community act like this and just act like it is their right to use S-Voice.

Open source and open platforms require respect from both sides.

Grow some balls.

You don't pay for s voice hence its not piracy. Its a Samsung designed app yes but its nothing illegal about it as no one trying to turn a profit from it.

If Samsung have a real problem with the go arounds then they can simply contact xda n have xda mods take it down

First of all, just because something is "free" doesn't mean it's piracy to rip it and redistribute it to everyone. Try putting up a download site for Internet Explorer and see how far you go with that.

Secondly, people DID pay for it. You pay for it by buying the S3 device. It costs you $800. I don't see how you can call that free by any stretch. Or are you honestly telling me that you buy your PC from Dell or whoever, and because it comes with Windows on it that you "didn't pay for" now you can rip Microsoft Word from that Windows and post it on XDA? Are you really that delusional?

It's even WORSE than the run of the mill piracy, because it's a network service so Samsung is paying a lot of money to run these servers. You're also degrading the service for legitimate customers by using it. This is like stealing cable then when the cable breaks you call customer service to come out and fix it. It's gone past just being wrong, now it's wrong and insulting.

I had it running on my Galaxy Nexus, but it failed with the easiest tasks like saving an appointment or waking me up. Guess its not compatible, what I understand, but still kind of sad. Hopefully it will be fixed by some devs or a nice S3 rom is coming to my nexus ^^

i do agree with you but u know what everyone is monitoring the xda coz everyday
some one come with new devlopment so this news spread very fast i have seen lot of sites publishing this article and definetly samsung knows this i agree with the above guy that they can contact the xda and remove it and also they know the tweak that they have applied btw if they wanna change the app function they can also do it
and again i dont think so that samsung will do this only a crapple does this to earn profit
and last think this is gonna happen one day samsung also knows this and we too
so stop arguing and enjoy the new app
also....this is nothing wait for MAJEL in google i/o it will blow this away

Do you work for Samsung? Seems that way (only 3 posts all on this thread). I do understand your point of view. Don't worry S-Voice is not all that great. People will play with it a bit and drop it as soon as they get bored with it, or something better comes along, which the later will be most likely the case.

I don't work for Samsung actually or for any OEM, but I am a software developer and I am involved in open source work. And if S-Voice isn't all that great, it's even worse, because then it wasn't even ripping them off for something good. It's irrelevant how good it is, Samsung thinks it's the best thing ever and its competitive edge, and now it's out and even now in a cracked version to get around the build props, and that will make it defensive.

What I care about is locked bootloaders, disabled sideloading, etc. I have a Galaxy S from AT&T and Samsung isn't very good about supporting it. So I installed ICS through the wonderful work of the Cyanogenmod team. But it's crap like this that causes OEMs to restrict their devices even further. It's actually the attitude that bothers me most, starting right from the title of the thread. It's like a lion kill, the dead carcass of the S3 is on the ground and "everyone come and get it!" S3 is already dead and torn apart and it's not even in the states yet. What if this happened to an HTC phone, wouldn't it discourage HTC from continuing their unlocking program? If anything now when a US version of S3 comes out Samsung will probably just lock it down more, which really hurts the ability of groups like Cyanogenmod to innovate and provide support for old devices. Sure, people will find a hack to exploit the locked bootloader, but now you have people dedicated to hacking on bootloaders (potentially via illegal means) instead of improving Android itself and working legally.

Open platforms require respect. If people just take whatever they want, whenever they want, for whatever reason they want, there is no reason for Google or Samsung or anyone else for that matter to continue allowing a legitimate, open path to innovation and development.

Can I get the apk, not compatible with my device

Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk 2

Only way is to download it with blackmarkt or 4shared, because it's against the "laws" in this forum posting "paid apps" on free links, you will have to seek it up yourself. That's how I do when google play wont allow me getting apps :D

If you modify the build.prop you are going to possibly break things like the chrome browser that look for certain strings in the build.prop. There is no longer any need to modify the build.prop because one of the users on the forum has released a modified apk that always says it's being run on a SG III without even looking at the build.prop. The op of this thread has added the new apk to the first post so you can 1) uninstall old apk 2) install the new apk and 3) restore your build.prop from backup (or from the .zip of your rom)

Network error = Need to install the new modified apk
Server error = Bug where svoice doesn't work when ran under wifi (if anyone has a fix for THIS one please post it)

Guys - I'm running S Voice all day - 90% of the time via WiFi -- no problems here with this...

You're right for the most part but don't ever think Google doesn't win even in this situation. Everyone on here from the devs to the hackers fit nicely into their business models. The devs provide support they don't have to and they still keep on collecting info and selling marketing. Really the hackers keep phones bricking and melting and Samsung and Google just sell more phones. This really shouldn't be considered freeware, you pay for it every time Google reads your emails, texts, and soon monitors your phone conversations.

Thanks to the OP for putting this out here for everyone. I just saw that xda tweeted about it. I tried to download but its saying there's too much traffic. Can anyone throw up a mirror? I tried the mirror in the OP but I believe that's the original app as I still got network error.

After installing the S Voice app, use a root explorer app to edit your build.prop to mimic that of the SGSIII.

    Change...
    ro.product.model=Galaxy Nexus

    To...
    ro.product.model=GT-I9300

Do the same with line ro.product.device

Save changes and exit app. Reboot device and enjoy.

EDIT: Its been reported that this may cause GWallet not to function!!

If I have create those mirrors, it was for helping @ithehappy . I didn't wait for a lot of gratitude, but now it becomes unpleasant. Cos lot of people leech
In fact, since I put those mirrors, there were 350 downloadings, and 6 thanks for all.

I think that the most part of the users don't know how to say thank you by clicking on the button ' thanks ' in down on the right.

I leave all mirrors even a while, afterwards these will be destroyed, because make these mirrors, take a lot of time, even if I make it, it's for my pleasure and to help @ithehappy.
But it's cool, when some members click "thanks", and not leech only.

The apps need to be deodexed to work with Custom ROMs. Otherwise they MAY be able to be used on an odexed rom.

To see what type of rom you have, go into /system/app via Root Explorer. If there are *.odex files in there, then you MAY be able to run the apps. If there are not, then you cannot run them. Feel free to run the Talk, Youtube and S-Voice apps though, as they are NOT odexed.

    Hi,

i've deodexed the APKs - currently uploading them to my google drive. They should all be up in a couple of minutes.

    https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bx7Y2q2W-LhWWDRXNVh0TWU4Qmc

Some of them are working, some are not. I'm still investigating why.. Live wallpapers are included. I'll start sorting them as soon as they're up.

Upload is in progress. Google Drive seems to be down at the moment..
