XAA or VZW firmware

I have a TMO branded Note 8. Unlocked.

It will be headed to VZW. I have already flashed XAA.

Can anyone recommend flashing XAA vs VZW firmware to maximize connectivity?

Hi - Thanks for the great guide. I've read through this, but I just want to confirm a couple of things. Background device info... I have a Unlocked Note 8 with Sprint service. If I have taken all OTA updates to this point, am I correct that I should have Sprint Unlocked Firmware?
My Phone Model is SM-950U1. I've had an issue with Bixby not being able to turn on Mobile Hotspot even though I can turn it on manually. Samsung has remotely gone into my phone and tried to fix the issue, but they have not been able to. Bixby always goes to the main settings screen and tries to tell me that it is the Mobile Hotspot and tethering settings even though it obviously isn't. If I give her the direct command to turn on hotspot, she either runs into hiccups or cannot perform the operation right now. Could this be a problem with my firmware/software? Samsung claims that I have a software issue and want me to send the phone in for repair, but the phone is perfect in every way other than this one issue. Also, in recovery, I get the following: ensure_path_unmounted failed to unmount /efs (device or resource busy)

I have hard reset the phone numerous times and nothing changes. I would like to play around with carrier firmware and carrier software if possible, but I want to make sure that I can get back to exactly what I have if there are issues. What would I need to flash in order to get Sprint Visual Voicemail working? Also, after I flash over to all the sprint FW/SW/userdata what would I need to flash to get back to how my phone is now?

When I go into recovery on the first line, I have the following:

No Support Single-SKU
Supported API: 3
E: ensure_path_unmounted failed to unmount /efs (Device or resource busy)

# Manual Mode v1.0.0#
-- Appling Multi-CSC...
Applied the CSC-code : SPR
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
-- Deleting selective files
remove failed dir '/system/app/IOAGent ' (No such file or directory)
-- Deleting RSU selective file
Successfully deleted RSU selective file

Successfully verify for dmverity hash tree

Is all of the above normal, or do I appear to have issues that need to be resolved by Samsung prior to flashing anything?

Hopefully this isn't too off topic, and thank you in advance for your help. I've been pulling my hair out over this for about 2 weeks now.

One other side note, I had a sprint branded Note 8 for a few weeks, but I ultimately returned it for an unlocked Samsung Note 8. Could any of my issues be related to my google account or Samsung Cloud account restoring buggy settings? Thanks again for all the help. I'll definitely make a donation if someone can help me through this without having to mail my phone to a Samsung repair facility.

I have note 8 sm-n950u1 flashed using odin with att firmware from your 'guides flashing carrier firmware' and updated to oreo using this link,
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.xd...note8-android-oreo-february-security-patches/

I'm running oreo right now for my note 8, after flashing
using odin with att firmware. Now, problem not solved, video calling, wifi calling not working. I chatt with att tech support, didn't helped even they registered my IMEA. Also group sms seemed to be not working as well. Any help will appreciate.

Lots of things here that I do not understand fully, would really appreciate some help/pointers.
I recently purchased an unlocked Note 8 which is on bootloader v1 (xxU1xx).
I am looking to upgrade to the ATT firmware to try to get WiFi calling and VoLTE.

  1. Can I directly upgrade to the v2 bootloader ATT firmware N950USQS2BQL5?
Or should I first move to the v1 ATT firmware (N950USQU1AQIA)?
(For reference, the list of ATT firmware versions available are (latest to oldest):
    N950USQU3BRA8, N950USQS2BQL5, N950USQS2BQK2, N950USQU2BQJA, N950USQU1AQIA, N950USQU1AQH7)
  2. Also, can I root after upgrading to N950USQS2BQL5 (ATT most recent v2 bootloader version) on N950U1?
  3. Would flash everything but BL using the latest v3 firmware file work while allowing root?

Really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

You can upgrade directly
BQL5 is rootable just use SamFail 2.5
If you flash any part of V3 Firmware, you will be on V3 for item flashed...No downgrades...but V3 Root is in the making...

Also I have a N950U1 stock ROM posted that is based on BQL2...in case you root...

The recovery info is normal...
You can flash the XAA Firmware that matches your version
- for instance, if you have 2BQL2 flash 2BQL2...if you have 3BRA5 flash 3BRA5

For VVM you need to flash carrier version
- since I have not posted SPR for 3BRA5 you can use any other carrier 3BRA? Firmware without USERDATA...if you are on BRA firmware...
- else if you are on 2BQL2...flash SPR BQL9 firmware...

I just use Google voice (transcription is free)

If flashing a Firmware in Odin does not fix your
Issue, there may be something else wrong...not software...

Use switching carrier section to change the code to ATT, even if it is already there, and then flash the ATT firmware again...Make sure to use V3 Bootloader Firmwares...this usually clears issues up...

First, many many thanks for the hard work and effort into this, and for the quick response.
I upgraded to (ATT) N950USQS2BQL5 yesterday, I would really appreciate some clarification on the following:
  1. I am not able to see any firmware updates available, the screen says I have the latest updates. Will I receive updates from ATT or Samsung? (Since there is a v3 BL FW already available, should'nt there be a update message/notification?)
  2. I see no ATT bloatware, is the firmware already debloated?
  3. I initially could not see any VoLTE/WiFiCalling options in Settings/Phone, but have VoLTE settings visible after enabling it in ShortcutMasterLite. Do not see WiFiCalling options in Phone, I am assuming this requires the IMEI whitelisted. Any other pointers for this will be appreciated.

Did you get the BQL5 from OP or ATT forums? Did you have SIM in during startup?

What does your about phone say for baseband and model number...

Updates take a few minutes to a few days for Carrier to send...but ATT usually has to sideload updates if a non ATT device like N950U1

  1. I got the BQL5 from the OP under "Flashing Carrier Firmware" - file link.
  2. SIM was not in during the very first time I upgraded, so I (clean) upgraded from Odin again after putting in the SIM.
  3. Baseband version: N950USQS2BQL5; Model number: SM-950U; I still see XAA/XAA/XAA in the service provider SW version; I do not see any ATT bloatware apps, or the ATT name anywhere. Wondering if I am missing something else in the FW flashing ... (I flashed all 5 partitions including CSC and ATT_USERDATA)

See if downgrading to 2BQK2 has the same issue...

If so, Follow the switching carrier guide to change CSC code from XAA to ATT...then flash ATT firmware...

If not, then you are good to upgrade...Flash the updated ATT Firmware...

    **Welcome to the Fox Den!**

This is a complete guide for flashing Unlocked Firmware, Carrier Firmware, and Carrier Switching for SM-N950U and SM-N950U1 (The guide can also be used for SM-N950W with appropriate files)

The firmware and files within this guide are hosted on various sites and I will try to keep updates available.
The steps in this guide require Samsung Drivers installed, adb setup, Odin & Odin (Prince Comsy), Download Mode, and Recovery Mode - Downloads are found below and are organized by guide used:

Before you proceed, I cannot be held liable for the damage or malfunction of your device using these files,
you proceed at your own risk and remove my liability by continuing to any portion of this thread! Flashing files from this thread will erase the internal storage so back up your files first!
***Note - Oreo releases on this thread will need to be flashed with New Odin3_v3.13.1 or Odin3_v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD - End Note***

!PLEASE BE SURE TO READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY AND SEARCH THE POSTS BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

    Prerequisites:
    - Your Note 8 and PC ready to flash
    - READ THE GUIDE YOU WISH TO FOLLOW!
    - Remove Samsung Kies/Switch if installed on PC
    - Download and extract all required files to convenient location, keeping all files organized, on PC
    - Install Samsung Drivers if not installed
    - Setup adb if not setup
    - Edit the "UMS/PATCH" of Odin3.ini file for Odin and Modified Odins from "0" to "1" and save ("Ctrl S")
+Updated Odin Zips so are already edited so there is no confusion, but feel free to double check.-
    - I started packaging firmware in individual .rar files to save space so you will have to extract them to flash them, else you will get error...

All SM-N950U1 Firmwares are unlocked and you may have better connectivity by flashing your carrier's, ATT, CCT, SPR, TMB, USC, or VZW, version of Unlocked Firmware.
XAA is Factory Unlocked Firmware and will work on all US carriers.
Some carrier features may not work on Unlocked Firmware without modifications.

    Switching Carrier:
Disclaimer - Switching Carrier will not carrier unlock your device. For carrier unlock, call carrier or pay for unlock service.
***Note - If you have updated to the V3 Bootloader, N950USQU3BRA?, for any carrier, Prince Comsy's Odin is not blocked - End Note***

Note - This guide uses adb, regular Odin, Prince Comsy's Odin, Canadian XAC Home_CSC, and Factory Binary.
Download Firmwares that match your intended carrier's product code, ATT, CCT, SPR, TMB, USC, VZW, XAA, or XAS.
Make note that Firmwares based on SM-N950U1 are Unlocked Firmwares and do not contain carrier files even though they have carrier code. For Carrier versions, download SM-N950U Firmwares.
Some carrier features may not work on different carrier devices without modifications or having IMEI added to intended carrier's whitelist.

**Note: This will NOT change the CSC Product Code of the device, it only allows you to change carrier Firmware effectively...for instance, XXX/XXX/SPR**
Match Binary version to your Firmware Version as older binaries do not work with newer firmware..

If you are just flashing Carrier Firmware on SM-N950U1, skip to Flashing Carrier guide. If you are just flashing Unlocked Firmware on SM-N950U, skip to Flashing Unlocked guide.

Actually there is Verizon, Sprint, USC, and ATT firmwares released with Blv3 right now. And no it has nothing to do with trying to downgrade BL versions.

There's already an article on XDA about it. Blv3 patches Comsey ODIN, so anything you need Comsey for, including Factory Binary, flashing out of region firmware (such as the N950UW XAC files) WILL hard brick your device.

There's been much discussion and confirmation of this in the Telegram group.
So we need an update to Comsy's Odin to bypass the patch....and I only found CCT and USC firmwares...ill research the block to modified Odin and see if anyone's working on a newer version...since it is used in unlocking (for pay) there should be a workaround soon...

    Never say Never...
