Hello world,
just to let you know i made my own Live wallpaper avalaible on the market, just search for "earth live wallpaper".

I'm making this thread coz i'm from france and so i don't have access to US comments and some of you reports me there's some troubles like the earth spinning the wrong way.
To stop polluate the "Live wallpapers" thread of the forum, i decided to open this one dedicated to this wallpaper.
Feel free to post any comments or wishes in here.

updated to market on 2010-02-21
-Deathstar2
-lots of bugfixes
-Customizable random map list
-Deathstar1 (also orbiting as moon around endor)
-No more loading texture in realtime map (except 1st time)
-offset planet position
-orbiting moon around earth
-crashed cached textures autofix to avoid sticky loading textures and need to remove earthrot folder by hand
-still looking for a proper way to wakeup service after the system killed it for memory, some tests in this version.

v1.2 is out:
-Fix of the realtime cloudmap+daylightmap. Be carefull with the refresh rate as each update consume around 70KB of datas
-kind of matrix effect on screen sliding where icons and background scroll the opposite way
-add an option for spinning around natural earth axis.
-maps of endor and tatooine (still looking for a decent deathstar and coruscent ones)

Features in dev :
-engine rewriting in native code linked to GLES2.0 lib + GLSL shaders for rotation
-lens flare effect

Some bitmap of stars would be nice. Maybe an option where the earth moves and the stars move at a different speed if possible.

edit: Being that this uses the GPU and not the CPU, is there less power consumption? Just curious.

i have no idea of the impact on consumption !!
i know that almost everything is sleeping when the screen is off or the globe isn't visible, but i can't tell you what's happening when you're staring at your screen

I second the above poster's request for stars, and planets surrounding. I can only imagine how difficult this type of development is but if you made the wallpaper more of a solar system feel, with the planets spinning I'd pay good money for a wallpaper like that!

The only request I have is for an option to automatically change from daylight to city lights based on the time of the day. Still a nice looking wallpaper.

I second all the suggestion. also please if you can, enlarge the earth size, as on Nexus one it does look small.

here's the roadmap for future updates :
-ability to grow or shrink the globe
-stars in the background
-automatic switch from daylight to night at fixed time.
-rewrite the engine to use GLSL vertex shader for rotation, and a fragment shader that do live day/night on the globe.
-more maps like europa, ganymede,jupiter,venus etc...
-redo the UVmapping at north pole which is actually crappy.
-TRY to do a complete solar system.

Awesome, good luck with all that, sounds like a lot of work but i'm sure it'll be worth it

Hi dude

i have other idea for a live wallpaper:

Digital/analog clock with selectable background and weather included

Im not sure if im the only that hates the widgets for clocks

I love it so far, but I'd like to add my wishlist:

-Scrolling to the left and right/zoom in and out (once other features are added)
-Twinkling, slightly circling stars in the background
-Moving clouds, twinkling city lights, weather effects on the earth (+100 if you can get it to interact with local weather)
-everything everyone else asked for

It's a very nice app! Can we have some background of stars, satelites, spaceships, international space station or something else as an option (to change from plain black)

Could we have the app switching from day to night with the clock

Could we have a size selector for the planet?
