I would imagine that the limited amount of memory in the phone has a lot to do with this decision. ICS is designed with phones that have 1GB or more in mind and the Play has less than 512MB. When combining games that require a large amount of RAM and and OS that requires a large amount of RAM there really isn't anything you can do other than upgrade the hardware of the phone.

Although I am disappointed to hear that there will be no ICS release, I do understand their reasons. Especially as VZ was never going to release it anyway.

At this point I would much rather see Sony work hard on a Xperia PLAY 2. My contract ends in 6 months and I do not want to replace my phone unless it has a game pad as I really dislike touch screen gaming. So again, I would rather at this point Sony works on a replacement or this phone.

Am I saddend, yes. But I would like to thank Sony and Sony Ericcson for their hard work in attempting to make ICS work with our phone. They have been extremely good to use users firmware update wise compared to other companies. So again. THANK YOU SONY for your efforts and for being honest with the Xperia PLAY community. I do hope that there is a Xperia PLAY 2 in the works....

Not really surprised or disappointed.

Looking at this from a logical point of view, I'm kinda siding moreso with a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." train of thought... we already witnessed firsthand that the upgrade came with sacrifices and compromises... leaving us with 2.3.4 didn't really do anything but save everyone a hassle. Less complaints filed for Sony, less of the devs having to stop working on new projects to patch older ones, and less of a waiting game on our consumer-side.

People that are willing to sacrifice their stability and software compatibility just to have the newest thing can already do so. The rest of use can stick to 2.3.X which works perfectly with everything.

My only real regret is not getting my hands on that sweet-looking new Game Launcher (which I'm willing to bet could just be ripped from the ROM and used without ICS).

ICS isnt design for 1gb+ Ram phones :/...

cant u see its sony who are developing such buggy software
2011 SONY linup can hardly handle ICS where as Nexus S of 2010 with almost same specs can handle ICS very gently

This is so pissy.
Just got my Play recently and Sony don't update it? This isn't a surprise as I'm used to the X8 and Sony's crap updating.

That's the last Android phone from Sony ill ever get.

Sony is telling us that we waited 6 months for them to figure that the upgrade will not work. 6 months of teasing, delays, preview videos..and then just give us the finger. Thats not cool sony.

They did the same with the x10 and gingerbread but they where just been lazy... then they released it 1 year later.

Sony, if the reason for not releasing was the pstore or the crappy playstation stuff...then get rid of them. If you are not going to support it anymore then what do you care if 3 lame psx games work. i bet all the gameloft games work, they still work on my G1.

I did get this phone because of the ICS update promise i wanted to have a future proof phone. Sony you disappointed me in more than 3 products.

I waited for ICS confirmation and release of a Beta to buy the xperia play, I sold a Samsung galaxy tab to buy the xperia play, and YES I bought it because of the ICS update! I also had a x10, and they said the same crap, until we from xda developers showed them wrong, then they updated it... The developers should unite all in a single project to make a CM9 version or something like that... Then they will see how wrong they are...

Never going to buy SE products again

Read this earlier on another site. Such a load of crap. I remember reading about the disaster that was the x10 (I didn't have one luckily) and was really happy to see that Sony changed their tune and promised all 2011 devices were getting the ICS update. It seemed they decided to start giving a crap about their customers. Guess I was wrong. If I had known that the play wasn't going to get the update then I wouldn't have gotten one. Don't know what I'll do with mine. I could unlock the bootloader but that means voiding the warranty or I could flog it and buy a galaxy s2 second hand.

ICS is not only for devices with 1gb+ ram. There are many Devices out there wichhave less and ICS runs awesome on them.
