I made this for myself last night for reference. Some info are redundant from appdroid's stickied post. It's meant to be concise but not all-encompassing. Hope it will be helpful to others. Of course all credits go to the devs who made this possible.

From Stock Galaxy Note

Part 1: Rooting and Clockworkmod

1. Install USB Driver for Windows (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I717ZBAATT).
2. In order to Odin you have to put your phone into download mode. To do so, turn off your phone, hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons, once you see the prompt
to put your phone into download mode press VOLUME UP.
3. To get Odin to work, start Odin and load the .tar, etc BEFORE plugging in your phone. Then put your phone into download mode and connect the USB. Once you plug in your phone the program will show device in COM port.
4. Root your phone. Two methods.
a. Flash counter raising: see here (http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1504218)
b. Flash counter intact: see here (http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1518962)
5. Clockworkmod recovery
a. Non-touch version: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
b. Touch version: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1584576
6. To put your phone into recovery.
a. Turn off your phone, hold both VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN and POWER. After you feel the first vibration, let go of the POWER button but keep holding the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN. You should go into CWM assume it’s flashed correctly.
7. First thing you do after installing CWM is to create a nandroid backup before you try to flash anything so you can restore if anything goes wrong.
8. Also you should check the md5sum of the rom, kernel, theme, etc file size before you flash to verify that downloaded file is correct and complete. To do that you can use any md5sum apps from the market such as this one. Some devs don't post md5sum info, so you have to ask for it.
9.Why clear cache, dalvik cache, and wipe data/factory reset before flashing a new rom?
a. cache: main data cache is used by the Android OS at runtime to write temporary files for specific reasons. You want to clear this out when you try a new ROM so it doesn't re-used that cached data.
b. dalvik cache: when you install an application on Android, it performs some modifications and optimizations on that application's dex file. It then caches the resulting odex (optimized dex) file in the /data/dalvik-cache folder, so that it doesn't have to perform the optimization process every time it loads an application. This is important if you flash a new kernel.
c. As a general rule you do all of above when flashing a new rom.

2. ICS Roms (UCLC5 Based leaks) - read carefully before flashing any ICS rom from GB rom. You may not be able to just flash CWM.

2. Hololight’s holoNote kernel: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1554540

Part 4: Reset flash counter: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1569206

Part 5: De-brick
1. First thing you should do is to try access CWM recovery (see above), then either restore a previous nandroid backup you made, flash a working rom that's on your sdcard, or put a working rom on your sdcard via your PC 's card reader and flash.
2. If you can't fix it via recovery, then put your phone into download mode. Flash a stock rom via Odin (see above)
3. If your Note won't turn on at all, you may be facing a hard brick.
4. You can also purchase a mini-usb jig which will put your phone into download mode even when above methods fail. I personally bought this one for $1.60 shipped. But basically any jig for the Galaxy phones should work.

Part 6: Enable Tether
1. Use Titanium Backup, and freeze or uninstall TetheringManager.apk in /system/app.
2. Then use any wifi tether app from the market.
3. Please note this is all done for you in most custom roms, so check your rom before this. You can always check see if TetheringManager.apk is there first.

I'm new to rooting samsung as well and so odin was new as well.

OP, you might want to add more info on CWM.
Backup, clear cache, clear dalvik, factory reset, flash zip from sd
You might also want to mention ics roms will clear internal sd card.

Haha i hear ya there! I came from Motorola; was easy as hell and no worries about the flash counter. On the Motorola boot logo when you would unlock the bootloader it would display small text at the top stating "unlocked." I was still able to return the phone with no issues. Are Samsungs different? Will the deny warranty if the flash counter is tripped?

One more thing op. It really should be mentioned about checking the md5. I know I'm lazy a lot of times but it really is important especially to someone new to this. They should feel more comfortable that the huge file they downloaded and are about to flash is still intact and not corrupted.

What I don't understand is why the kernel flash? If flashing Saurom already has the ability to overclock? Does flashing Da_G’s dagkernel do something else. Or does this only apply to other roms??

If you are on Saurom, there is no reason to flash the existing kernels since they are part of the rom. If you are on stock GB rom, then you can potentially improve your phone's performance by flashing one of those kernels. The main advantage of the da_g's kernel is to allow overclocking. Even though all Galaxy Notes are tagged with a chip clock speed of 1500Ghz, every CPU is actually different. Yours may be perfectly stable running at 1700Ghz. The only way to tell is flash an overclock kernel to try a higher number to see if it improves performance and if it's stable to maintain it.

If your phone runs like the way you want it, there is no need to flash any the kernels. Of course, this is not all the kernels provide, so read the individual releases to see if there is anything that may benefit your needs.

Downloaded the ATT RootNote.zip and...

I assumed that we were supposed to unzip it so I did and now have att_note_root.tar that is 815 Mb?? Is that correct - seems awful large. Also I don't see any md5 sums (in fact the root.tar file doesn't have an md5 extension. Do we flash this using Odin??

So then I assume that we flash CWM I717 ....tar using Odin also (at least that's the way I put CWM on my Galaxy Tab 8.9.

Could you please verify the above for me before I start root & CWM.

Thanks a milion

Can you post the thread where you downloaded the file. I assume you are just trying to root your stock Note right?

Can you post the thread where you downloaded the file. I assume you are just trying to root your stock Note right?
Thanks for the quick reply - here's the info that you asked for:

Initial thread was http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
from Da_G and I downloaded AT&T Note Root.zip - that file was 545 Mb and contains the Odin 1.85 zip (1 Mb), the USB Drivers (23 Mb) and a file called att_note_root.zip (535 Mb). I further unzipped the last file to finally get att_note_root.tar (815 Mb)!

This last tar file contains system.img.ext4 which I assume is the rooted stock kernel. BTW, I'm using 7Zip for unzipping and running Win7 - 64 Bit

Forgive me for being dense 'cause I'm used to using stuff like SuperOneClick or Zergrush to root my Sammy devices (couple of Galaxy tabs and the 5" Galaxy player) - all have CWM on them and I have never had the slightest issue)

At this point, all I wish to dop is root and install CWm so I can make a nandroid backup but I am thoroughly confused as there are several closely related threads on this.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

@docfreed and uvail9u follow the following steps to get Clockworkmod (CWM), root and custom ROM. This is the easiest way but will raise your flash counter (most people don't care since no ATT employee is going to check your flash counter but you should be informed).

1. Install USB Driver for Windows see OP.

2. Flash CWM
a. downloading Odin 1.85 (see attachment)
b. extract it into a folder
c. download the latest and greatest Odin version of braway's CWM from here.
d. place that file in the Odin folder
e. Run Odin
f. Load the CWM .tar.md5 file under PDA in Odin (see attached screen shot).
g. put your phone into download mode see OP, and plug in your USB.
h. you should see Odin indicate COM port being detected, then hit Start.

3. After Odin is done, it will reboot your phone. You now have CWM.

4. Make a nandroid backup of your phone first by getting into CWM with instructions in the OP with button combos.

5. You can then download DAGr8's GB rom here or his ICS rom here.

5. Put the .zip file (check size btw in md5sum) in the root of your internal storage or external sd card of your choice.

6. Boot into CWM and choose the .zip of the rom and flash. You will have a custom rom and will be rooted.

P.S. I'm telling you to do the above steps because I believe it's the easiest way to get a custom ROM loaded, and you could brick your phone in the process, just be extra careful. If something doesn't feel right don't do it. Also you don't have to use DAGr8's rom. Other roms can be flashed the same way, but you can't flash all the ICSs roms directly from stock ATT GB rom or other GB roms, so be careful. If you just want to flash your first rom follow the above.

So, if we follow this....

But stop after we do nandroid backup, we wind up with rooted stock? If so, you are a true lifesaver since at first I only want to root to remove bloatware!

    g. put your phone into download mode see OP, and plug in your USB.
    h. you should see Odin indicate COM port being detected, then hit Start.

Thanks for this handy All-In-One-Post, as it's always a pain having to read through ALL the various forums and threads to get a good feel for the available & best options when rooting, ROM'ing, and modding a new device.

I'll be returning to this thread when I upgrade from my old Captivate (running CM9 since November) in a few weeks. I was waiting to see if the Galaxy S3 was worth waiting for (to be revealed May 3rd), but from the leaks it doesn't look like it'll be quite enough of a spec bump from the SGS2's guts in the Note to outweigh having a 5.4" screen (until the Note 2...).

Hopefully the official ICS ROM for the Note will have been released by then, too, because I really don't want to go back to Gingerbread, and none of the current leak-based ICS ROMs available for the ATT Note (vs international) seem very compelling to me at this point in time. ICS was a huge buttery-smooth performance improvement on my old SGS1 Captivate, and it should be even more so on the Note, but I also want the stability of a ROM being based on the official ICS.

Lastly, I run Linux here, where ODIN (for windoze) is of no use, so I'll have to use another method, like Heimdall for galaxy s', and I'll pass those instructions on to you to add to this sticky REF (if you're still maintaining it).

I am in the same boat. I have Good on my Note and I know they check for root. I haven't rooted the note yet but I heard about "root keeper" in the market. Supposedly, it can unroot and reroot fairly easily but I haven't tried yet. I plan to kill the app (making sure persistence is off), root, run TB and freeze good right away. I will then test rooting and unrooting to see how that works and then try defrosting Good to see if I froze it before it detected root and if the temporary unroot hides it enough so it isn't detected. I will probably try this weekend - I've been holding out to make sure there are no problems with my Note (had it for a week) before rooting. It's driving me crazy having to run a stock rom though...

FWIW, most apps that check to see if your device is rooted will simply check for the existence of the 'su' binary being in your PATH, which you can rename.

I am still waiting for someone to confirm that you can use Heimdall on this phone to root it; I am an all mac/OSX house, and I want to root this thing, and using heimdall on my E4GT was easy peasy; but, so far, every time I have asked this question about heimdall in a few threads, no one has answered me...I don't want to be a guinea pig and brick if heimdall won't work on this phone, so I am hoping one of the great devs or veteran flashers on this phone can confirm you can just flash a rooted kernel via heimdall and have a rooted phone..
