So coming from a nexus 5 and and moto X I quite like the recents button. I hate how lg have made a button for menu which is pointless (in my opinion). Is there any to change without root. If not how do I do it with root?

It is a KitKat thing, not an LG thing. Without root, just hold the Home button (arrow up) for a second longer and you will have recents. With root, see http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2719327&page=2
