You are holding the volume up and down and power button till the Samsung logo pops up then letting go correct?

Yes
also have tried keeping them pressed, Samsung logo disappears then comes back to boot to ICS
Can you boot into download mode?

I pressed volume up to confirm now it says

What do I have to do? Wait? Remove battery?

OK so if you can go into download mode then you must be doing something wrong. I myself have gone through a few android phones and still sometimes have trouble going into recovery mode. Try again. Press and hold volume up, down and the power button. Then you will see the Samsung logo. B4 the logo goes away let go of all the buttons. Then you should be OK.

Yer I gave up and done that
I found a youtube video that was showing how to enable the 3 button recovery on a i9000 because some are disabled
Is it likely that mine too is disabled?
Thanks
OK. Sorry wish I could help.
