OK thanks for your help!

Good question. And the answer isssss

It depends on the app developer. They decide where the app looks for the data. Some allow you to choose locations. You should email the dev, explain the situation and ask how it can be resolved, they may include a fix in the next update

I have now seen several posts that the T&S otg cable works. Any ideas why it doesn't on mine? I am rooted, and the cable works on another device as do the thumb drives. At least one of the drives has been confirmed to work on the N7 on this thread.

Is there something that needs to be done in settings or stick mount? I have read the threads and searched, but no suggestions so far..

NM: I was finally able to get it to work. There is a connection problem either with the cable or the Micro USB port on the phone N7. It took some jiggling for the cable to register. I have a couple more ordered. Hopefully it's the cable and the others will be easier to use. Nevertheless I was able to view videos directly off a Microusb card.

I do like the wireless storage solution, but for me, it doesn't work well because I travel a lot.

In an airplane, you are NOT allowed to use ANY device that broadcast wireless signal, Wifi, RF, bluetooth.. heck even the wireless pS3 controller!

So I ended up just buying 64GB microSDXC card with the elago Nano USB reader ($9 @ Amazon) and OTG cable.

I am also planning to buy the Maxell AirStash. It's a USB dongle that accepts SD card and have built-in wireless. So it just like Satellite GoFlex, but if you already have large SD card (I have 2 64GB microSD), you can use this instead.

Nexus 7
Amazon Fire HD 8 and HD 10
Bought two different cheap USB-OTG cables from Amazon, this one, and this one. Only the second one has arrived.

The following USB Flash drives mounted with Stickmount and were visible to ES File Explorer.
Sandisk Cruzer 4GB Micro U3
Sandisk Cruzer 4GB
PNY Attache 256MB

The following microSD, and SD cards were inserted in Sandisk MobileMate SD+ Card Reader, mounted with Stickmount and were visible to ES File Explorer.
Sandisk microSD 16GB Class 4
Sandisk microSDHC I 16GB
Sandisk microSD 32GB Class 4
PNY Optima SD 2GB
Sandisk SD 2GB

The following two external hard drives did not mount with Stickmount when attached directly to the USB-OTG cable.
Generic EIDE case with 40GB 2 inch hard drive.
Toshiba 1TB USB3.0*
* Note the Toshiba drive partially powered up but made a clicking noise.

Connected a D-Link DSB-H4 USB Hub (USB 1.1) powered by an AC adapter to the USB-OTG cable. Then connected the two previous external hard drives to the USB hub and was able to mount both external drives, at the same time, with Stickmount and both drives were visible to ES File Explorer.

A couple of times ES File Explorer failed to read any files on the microSD cards even though Stickmount indicated the card was mounted. When I went into Stickmount and select Mount then the microSD card contents would be visible to ES File Explorer.

Both a USB keyboard and USB mouse when connected directly to the USB-OTG cable did not work.

However, using the aforementioned AC powered D-Link USB Hub connected to the USB-OTG cable, both the USB mouse and USB keyboard worked on the Nexus 7.

Could you see them with any other explorer? Yes
If yes which one: Works fine in Solid Explorer. Not tried anything else.

Do the files open normally from the explorer? Things APPEAR to be working fine.... I tried it, fully expecting it to not work, and stickmount grabbed it, and mounted it... I copied an episode of Big Bang Theory over to it, and launched it in MX Player. It played absolutely fine. I dont know how this works, being that its rated at 5v...
Nexus 7 battery was at 59% at the time of trying, which was 3785mV.

Has anyone tried this

I just wondered if anyone with an unlocked and rooted Nexus 7 with Stickmount loaded has tried a USB phone dongle to see if you can get 3G ?

After reading some experiences on my other thread about how some USB devices work perfectly, and some only allow you to see and copy your material I am starting this thread so that people that need to buy external storage but are afraid it may not work.

So some people that already have the Nexus7 have been able to have Full USB support. Some have not been so lucky.

Here is how to have full usb support:

Step 1) Root your Nexus

Step 2) Download and set up the app Stickmount

Step 3) buy a usb drive and a USB-OTG cable (plenty of threads on where to buy

Step 4) Post your results in this thread using the forum below.

Nexus7 16GB or 8GB

USB device: (Manufacturer, model, size, etc. Whether it is USBdrive, Harddrive, or sdcard)

USB-OTG cord: (Brand, purchased from, relevant thread)

Could you see the files in the Nexus7 native file explorer?: Yes or No

This should help us buy the right brands so we don't waste our money.

NOTE TO THE MODS:
This is not a thread requesting deals, or a thread discussing how to host USB

This thread is just for the effectiveness of each device.

This thread should ONLY have posts with the above format and replies that are designed to help fix any problems with that device.

If you want to discuss anything about the Nexus7's ability to host, or about it's host development, etc please post in this general thread:

http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1736825

Please only post in this thread if you have a review of your experiences, or if you have a method to fix someone's problematic experiences (though that could be handled through PM and then the OP of that review could update their post.

Let's keep this as a neat organized reference. If you want to thank anyone in this thread, just hit the thanks button, no need to post.

My Nexus 7 Storage Results

Nexus7 16GB

USB device: WD Passport 1TB, portable HDD.

USB-OTG cord: Elite OTG adapter.

Could you see the files in the Nexus7 native file explorer?: Was not aware of a native file explorer.

Could you see them with any other explorer? Yes
If yes which one: ES File Manager

Do the files open normally from the explorer?: Yes, though I only tried with flac files.

All three devices were purchased at my local Memory Express location, a vendor up here in Canada.

This worked with both rooted Stock and third party roms. I will have to do some more testing, but its seems that once the nexus 7 gets to about 60% battery I was having troubles seeing the drive. I noticed this during my only extended play session so far, however for the rest of my test sessions I have had the tablet fully charged. If anyone is curious, I had the drive connected and playing music nonstop for just over 3hrs.

The Nexus 7 will not work with SanDisk Cruiser. I have one as well and finally tried a different thumb drive and it worked perfectly. Hope this helps.

I am debugged, unlocked, rooted and stickmounted.

The USB sticks are automatically found and mounted on boot, and Dice Player will play from stick with 3 clicks (usbStorage/sda1/mymovie.mp4. I can swap sticks "hot" without closing anything, go back through directories and watch a different movie.
I can also watch direct (I don't know how long) from the WD USB drive (the swap is not quite as graceful for Dice Player but movies are not at root either) but it works! (I can also move movie from WD drive to movie folder with Super Manager and watch from there.)
I watch (wives describes action)/listen (through radio AUX/speakers) to movies as I drive - this will do it!

Trying hub/multi output car charger next for power maintenance.

Also, my little Rii 2.4 keyboard/dongle works fine (even before unlock/root/stickmount). Nice to have a baby mousepad and cursor, PU, PD etc!

Hope it helps.

Now there needs to be a case made that allows for the USB drive to be tucked away so we don't need to worry about it.
