@TheGoD: Sure, could definitely do that. But what would be the default? I mean would the default folder be a startup folder? Like the current sd root folder?
Yeah exactly, I'd like to determine the start-up folder if the application.

btw., feels strange to talk english to a german...)
So true, actually thought the same thing while writing my original post^^

Sorry four my late responds btw.

Again, sorry for that. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do about it. This is a general Android thing

I noticed that my pictures will still show up after I've ticked one of the folders, but if I update media then they don't show up.

So I was thinking, maybe have the app auto update media for you after you've ticket one of the folders.

Sorry if this has been suggested already.

Android .nomedia bug deletes media files!

I am surprised not to find this issue discussed in this thread, although the market reviews for this product are full of people saying "it deleted my files". There is a well-known Android bug even in Froyo on some phones, Issue 3692: MediaScanner deletes jpg and gif files, which I can easily reproduce on my phone, Samsung Fascinate. I expect any Galaxy S user can do so as well, which is why I'm surprised.

Issue 3692 says:

When a ".nomedia" file is added to a directory that has already been scanned by the media scanner, any jpg and gif files in that directory and all sub directories will be deleted.

However, if the the ".nomedia" file is added to a directory before the jpg or gif images are added then those images will not be deleted, even if a ".noimage" file is added to a parent directory.

So I proceeded as follows, using ES File Explorer for file operations:

  1. In ES, create two folders "t1" and "t2"
  2. In GE, exclude t1 and update gallery.
  3. In ES, copy some .jpg files into t1 and t2.
  4. In GE, update gallery.
  5. In ES, verify jpg files are present in both t1 and t2.
  6. In GE, exclude t2 and update gallery.
  7. In ES, verify files in t2 have been deleted.

I wonder if this is just for certain devices that the bug appears. I've never had any pictures deleted by using this app. The .nomedia files were added quite a while after all the pictures were there. I also have a Galaxy S as you can tell by the short sig from the XDA app and my regular signature.

You guys,

thanks for all the replies. Seems that I lost a little track of the app. Been busy quite for a while. But you are right, there are many comments that state they lost their pictures. The bug has a terrible effect on the app. I added a line to the description stating that there is a bug in Android OS which might end up in lost media files.
However, this can only be a temporary workaround. I hope that Google will address this is the current or future OS. Does anyone know more about this?

Happy new year to everyone.

I released an update yesterday which helps with the navigation. It also changes to ICS theme. However, it does not work on ICS and I can't say anything about HC.

So does anyone know if Google has changed something there? MediaScanner seems to be ignoring .nomedia files.

ICS working

Hi everyone,

another update now establishes Android Ice Cream Sandwich compatibility by employing a little workaround. Let me know if it works for you

Clearing data from media storage doesn't seem to force the gallery to re-index. What I did was only tick the folder "Music". Tried to re-index the gallery (by clearing data from media storage). Went into the gallery and it is now empty. I also tried to restart the phone but the gallery is still empty (pictures haven't been deleted, just not being detected by the gallery anymore)

I'm running the app on the LTE Galaxy Nexus, stock 4.02, unlocked. Thanks for any help.

[edit]Actually, I think restarting the phone helped. The gallery eventually re-indexes. Will keep on testing.

It does work but at some point (like 1 minute after you saw that it worked) some "pictures" are back again.
In my case only GTA 3 related ones located in \sdcard\Android\data

Galaxy Nexus, everything stock.

You should pull this app for users of ICS.
My images have disappeared, they came back but my music still won't show up in play music or Apollo. :(

Inspired by this post on the blog I decided to ease up the exclusion of directories from the gallery/media database. Gallery Excluder does the job for me.

    Here's why:
Many apps create folders on the sd-card and drop their stuff there. Often, they place images as well. Now that Android checks the sd-card for new media from time to time, these folders will be added to the media database and displayed in the stock Gallery app.

    Here's how:
Gallery Excluder lists all direct subfolders of '/sdcard' respectively '/mnt/sdcard' and displays them in a list. If an item/folder gets checked there is a '.nomedia' placed in that folder. If the folder gets unchecked the '.nomedia' is removed.
Since it can take a while to have the gallery update you can force a manual update via options menu.

So please let me know if such a tool can be helpful for anyone except myself.

Now with subdirectories. Downside: there is no feedback when you selected a subfolder for its parent. E.g. when you excluded /mnt/sdcard/folder/subfolder/ you can't recognize it when viewing folder /mnt/sdcard/ (folder won't be selected).

If you feel like supporting my work click some ads. This is an experiment for me to figure if ads work. Thank you.

    Market release
    - long press an item to dive into the subfolder
    - back takes you up one level
    - select all/none
    - hint for 1st time users
    - external sd card support

    TODO for next version(s):
    - external sd card support
    - white list mode

Great, thanks. Got the 1st "negativ" rating (3 stars) because someone is complaining it ain't working on Motorola Defy. Can't do anything about it. This is what I dislike about Android...

I have a motorola defy and the app work great...don´t have problems. But I want to remove the music folder, so the galery don´t show the covers, but if I do that the music player don´t recognice the music folder.

Read through this thread and its stated a couple times that this is known and is a limitation of the stock Music player. Poweramp and Winamp does not have this issue.
