Flashed zip and installed them manually using adb install.

Talk - Works as expected
Youtube also starts (haven't watched a video yet)
Calendar starts but it has a sync issue
Gmail - gives stopped unexpectedly
Maps and lattitude - works
Vending (Market) - works (not sure if it's different from OP's version)
the LatinIME works and also has a dictionary working

Other 'bugs' - alpha 7
When I enable file transfer (storage -> menu / settings) settings crashes but the checkbox remains checked however I cannot use it as a USB drive (the SD card that is)

Gallery is all black unless when you try to 'drag' or 'whipe' on the screen then it shows pictures but as soon as you stop touching the screen it is black again.

And I think that's about it so far, great job OP =]

Does anyone have a blackrose partition layout recommendation for ICS AOSP? I want to try changing partitions and will be helping to test this ROM as well, however I don't want to shrink cache too much to impact running ICS. From blackrose threads, these are suggestions for the various ROMs. Would stock scheme be best, or any other ideas?

145/95/196 Stock
105/5/331 Oxygen
125/5/306 MIUI
150/5/281 Cyanogen

This is going faster than I thought it would. Once headphone jack and camera works, it would be perfect for me.

extract the tar.bz2 and you should have two files: boot.img & system.img
Then run:
fastboot flash boot Location_of_boot.img/boot.img
fastboot flash system Location_of_system.img/system.img
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot

For example (under Windows):
fastboot flash boot C:/Users/Username/Downloads/ics_passion/boot.img
fastboot flash system C:/Users/Username/Downloads/ics_passion/system.img
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot

Also if it makes it easier you can CD to the download/extraction location and then just run
fastboot flash system system.img
etc

We got headphones working on the HD2:

Perhaps its a similar fix for the N1?
Bottom line is /sys/class/switch/h2w/state needs to have a value of 1 or 2 (1 is with mic, 2 without). The value was being OR'd with some funky HTC flag that Android does not recognize, so I just removed it.

Based on the description of the current issue I'd say it's very likely. Thanks a lot.

I don't know where they host the kernel used for this ROM though so I can't check.
