i was just wondering since on the Hero switching on the mobile data for long periods could really kill my battery life. as such i leave it off unless i need to use it (whatsapp, youtube etc.) however at times certain apps require mobile data connection to be switched on such as whatsapp or emails in order to "sync". Is there any app that allows automatic switching on and off of mobile data via a timer or some sought ?

I think JuiceDefender and other battery-save-apps has the function.. Maybe you can get an app that does just that... not sure

You can try something like Droidwall to switch internet off for some apps (like games, music players, notepad and other).

You can install too some APN switcher to make internet connection off when you don't use it.
