Hey guys. I received the N10 just now. Havent checked it yet as I'm at work. My worry is I dont know about these issues before I purchase so I'm hoping I got the good unit.

I dont exactly know what you mean by light bleed? Can someone patiently explain it? I will really appreciate it. Thanks.

Edit: Ok I think I got it. Have to test it later.

If you're not 100% satisfied with either, and you can afford to have another $499 hold put on your credit card, I'd ask for a 3rd replacement. With the amount of money we spend to get these tablets there's no reason we should have to settle for a less than acceptable unit.

I could afford a second hold (£319 in my case) but I'm not actually comfortable with having two of them at the same time. I really want to send back the 2nd N10 to remove the hold but the RMA is obviously for my 1st one and Google still haven't replied to my email asking to change the RMA (I emailed well over 48 hours ago now). After seeing how bad the 2nd unit is I really want to hang onto the 1st one til I can get something better. I'm worried if I send my 1st one back that anything I ever receive afterwards will be even worse.

All that said, I checked out a friend's iPad 3 last night and while I don't like iOS very much, I'm now very tempted to get the refund and go for an iPad instead. The screen might not be 300ppi but at least it's evenly lit and doesn't have awful discolouration like my N10s do.

I've just had my fourth replacement (5th N10 in all), and Google have said 'no more' - if I don't like the new one then it's a refund. Unfortunately the new one has worse light bleed than the previous one. On the plus side, the evenness of the display seems to be better, which for me is the most important thing. Going to use it for around a week before making a final decision. Damn shame they fck'd it up with dogs dinner manufacturing.

I guess it makes sense that Google won't keep exchanging them indefinitely but at the same time it's pretty crap customer service that says "you either keep this defective device or you don't get anything." To be honest I think my reaction to that would be to request the refund immediately rather than let them hold me to ransom.

How is everyone coping with the screen yellowing rather than the backlight bleed? I just got my device back after a month of them doing absolutely nothing, and I forgot how more noticeable the yellowing was on the right side of the screen compared to the backlight bleed. It's most noticeable on the keyboard, where the right half of the keys are a yellowish gray, while the left side are a normal gray. I'm really sick of the service center's lack of competence, so I really don't want to have to send my device in again.

If only there was an app to adjust the color for half of the screen. One can dream...

Edit: Here are some pictures to illustrate how bad it is. One is at max brightness and the other is at min brightness.

At this point I am extremely upset with google. First I waited the 21 days or whatever it is for them to "remove" the pending charges on my account, but they never actually got around to it. So I call google and they emailed a "specialist" who asked me for a bunch of information and then told me that the charges would be removed within 10 days. 19 days later they are still there. Today I called and got someone who actually seemed pretty eager to help and he said he emailed their "specialists" to escalate the issue and that he should be able to get back to me within a few hours. I shouldn't have to call freaking 3 times to resolve an issue. They have had both rma units in their possession since early December, but to top things off I'm still left with a faulty device.

Mine has MAYBE a little along the bottom edge on the right side--about a half inch...nothing too noticeable and much more liveable vs. the stuck pixels on the N7.

I'm surprised to read that Google said after a 4th replacement that you'd be forced to choose between keeping your 5th device or getting a refund. Aside from the absolute crappy customer service involved in that, it's the complete opposite of what I was told when I was calling them about my 2nd RMA. My fear was that I'd get another bad one (then another, and another...) and I asked how many times I could exchange my unit with Google. The woman I spoke to said there's no limit. I then asked, partially tongue-in-cheek, if I could request an RMA every week for the next 4 months. Again, I was told this was okay, so long as Google could verify that the units I was sending back did indeed have the issues I was calling about (otherwise I'd be hit with a restocking fee).

Either the Google CSRs we're speaking to are extremely uninformed, or they've had a huge amount of returned devices and have since changed their policy regarding RMAs.

Are the charges actually there? I have two as pending on my account but my credit card company tells me there are no funds being held. Seems like the RMA has gone through but no one bothering to take them off. Another example of Google not knowing its arse from its elbow. Will probably take them a while to remove them, but tbh it's my credit card co. that I'm going to listen to.

Maybe they think the light bleed is within tolerance and I'm being overly fussy. Personally I think they should puta bit more effort into not making piece of crap hardware. That said, I much prefer the N10 to the iPad, even with the flaws. Will be thinking very long and very very hard about buying Google again though.

samsung seal open + defective nexus 10 - twice!

Hi,

Another customer with dissapointing experience with the Play store (UK).

First nexus: both samsung seals open & power button semi-broken (can only operate by pressing hard with the nail).

Second nexus: both samsung seals open & major backlight leakage

Asked the UK call centre if they could send one that was new (i.e., had unbroken seals) and was told that they could not guarantee this. Instead, I was told I could ask for another replacement (hoping it was sealed) or ask for a refund.

As others have pointed out in this thread - it seems like they are sending out returned tablets as new...

The approach taken by google here seems rather unfortunate. I really like the Android platform and much prefer it to iOS. However, I also need a highres tablet and at the moment it looks like the iPad retina will give most bang for the back (inifity t700 is too expensive). I really really would rather be on Android but the Q/A for the nexus 10 seems atracious.

Cheers,

I like you received not one but two Nexus 10's with both seals broken!! Both from the US Play store and I explicitly said to them when sending out the second one that I wanted a brand new and unused tablet......

I'm going to MWC in Barcelona on February 25th and I am really really hoping that Samsung will show off the next Galaxy Tab (Tab 3) and it will blow the Nexus 10 out of the water! Then I'll just go and buy it!!

Cheers,
M

so they accept returns after 15-days period? I have had 5 replacements and by 3rd replacement, its already over 15 days from original purchase date. The 5th one is not as bad as previous ones but light bleeds are still noticeable at 0%. Because of this, I didn't bother to play with it for 2 weeks especially during my busy work schedule. I wish I hadn't bought this piece of crap.

I bought mine in Google Play market, but it came with both broken seals, does it mean that I got somebody's return?
BTW It does have light bleed effect.

Welcome to the world of google play customer service!! Not only do they send you used items but they also hesitate to email you back, forget about what exactly you need, put holds on your credit card and if you're very lucky you have to ask for a refund and at times they will slap you with buyers remorse!! You're life will now be changed!

Just an update guys and the FUN I had with Google Play customer care. Yesterday I FINALLY got my full refund, as in every red cent back off them! The unfortunate thing is the € was not as strong against the $ as when I bought it and I ended up getting less back than what it originally cost me :( Anyhow......the upshot is I had to hound and hound them to get the full refund (no restocking and shipping) back and it was a horrible horrible experience all said!!

Never again for sure,
M

Well, after nearly a month of waiting, my two-time repaired Nexus 10 is being shipped back to me. Hopefully Samsung got it right this time and gave me an LCD with minimal light bleed and ACTUALLY put it in the right way, but I'm not holding my breath. Although, in the email I just got from them, it did say they replaced the screen as well as "cosmetic," which I think means the back casing.

For everyone worried about whether broken seals means they've not received a new unit, note that I've seen N10 boxes with one seal broken and one intact. I'm pretty convinced that the seals break pretty easily during handling, and so broken seals by itself doesn't mean that Google is sending out used machines.

I got the same email except that this is the third time back! I was on a long can with an executive account manager. This time it went through to the repair manager. My ticket said the same as yours but they needed to replace the bezel that they dented, the screen again, and the case they scratched. The second time the tablet went back they put a bad screen in and put the dent in the case. I have no faith in them. I'll know when it comes back but I'm just about done with this tablet and Samsung's repair outfit.

I've noticed people having problems getting the bank holds off of their account. I have gone through 4 replacements and had the holds taken off within a week.

The last 2 replacement holds were taken off before I even sent back the previous devices! Very strange.

I am in the process of a full refund now, will let you know how it turns out.

    What is exactly "light bleed"?
    Background light inconsistency.

    5060128160_802f0c4f36.jpg

nope, was full brightness on all 3
yes, that is just how big the difference is.

the iPad has a little light bleed as well which you can see if crank up the brightness on whatever you view the picture on (bottom right and top right in particular) but the black level is just much MUCH blacker which is why the visibility is so low in the picture.

incidentally I did end up exchanging my iPad for a replacement too because it had 1 dead pixel and 1 stuck pixel so I'm not trying to claim iPads are flawless either but when it comes to backlighting there's just no comparison

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the display itself on the nexus 10. Its as good as it gets on a tablet form. The display on the nexus can push the same levels on blacks as the retina display.. And in many ways the nexus 10 display is better for picture quality. Now,... What makes apples new iPad seem as a better display, is simply because they are better in the assembly/connecting the display to the iPad. They managed to align it in way causing minimal stress to the display,. And that's to me where apple really shines through,.. They are consistent in their quality of making their products. Its herein 95% of all backlight bleeding occur. The backlight bleeding in the nexus 10 is NOT caused by a bad display,.. But it IS caused by BAD assembly from factory. It takes only just a little uneven pressure on the display to cause the backlight bleeding.
And the way the nexus 10 is put together, makes it like winning the lottery to find one without backlight bleeding. That said it is possible to eliminate the backlight bleeding. I fixed my display myself, removing 98% og the backlight bleeding,. Bad news is, that its not an easy fix, because of the way the display was assembled. It takes alot of patience and fiddling, and you'll be without warranty if you break something trying to fix it.

So long story short,.. The display on the nexus 10 is flawless,... It's the way they made room for it that sucks. After taking the nexus apart I will almost guarantee that more than 90% of the complaints people make of their backlight bleeding problems, is coming form their bottom right and/or left corner, as this is where they made everything so narrow that its almost impossible not causing any stress to the lower/bottom of the display.

Now a word of advice,... If you only have backlight bleeding on highest brightness but no bleeding on the lowest brightness,.. No reason to try fix it,. You won't be able to see the backlight bleed in the daytime anyways, and in low/no light environment you should use the lowest settings on brightness for optimum picture performance anyways. And that's (to me) where the display really shines through, with its ability to render crisp details in low brightness. And actually its more the cell light you set up and down (when adjusting the brightness in android) than it is the brightness of the display.

    TechGeek over and out:)

OK here are some photos. The best I could do in a dark room shooting with my Nexus 4.

I think people just want to love this tablet so much and are trying to convince themselves that the defects aren't "that bad". Don't try to justify it, just send it back or get a refund.
    3
Any LCD with a backlight will suffer from light bleed to some extent even the iPad3 retina (just Google for the pictures). Obviously, something to check for and exchange if it's significant. The pictures on The Verge don't show any signs of it and the pixel level comparison shows the Nexus 10 display to be superior in black level, colors and sharpness against retina.
