GOT ROOT?
http://droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/boot-new.img.zip

1. download this, extract boot-new.img to your computer.
2. place your device into bootloader mode (BACK+POWER, or VOLUME DOWN+POWER)
3. fastboot boot boot-new.img
4. wait for device to boot
5. adb push boot-new.img /sdcard/boot-new.img
6. adb shell flash_image boot /sdcard/boot-new.img

that's it!

your device now has root via adb shell.

Is there any FAQ/guide to what this means? Don't want to ask stupid questions here Can we install original HTC Magic 1,5 firmware or are those firmwares not available?

What does it mean for us mere mortals? Can this be used on the Dream, or is it purely for Magic?

No clue, but I thought this thread was posted in the "Dream" forum (as opposed to one of the "Sapphire" forums here) for a reason.

search the Market for root and you will see many apps that you need root to use.

http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=root

You can also move your apps to your sdcard and tetther your phone (though you need to get the tether apps outside of the market.
