Using AutoRec with Malladus (for VS980)

I'm running Malladus 2.0 RC3 (a stock-based ROM for the VS980), and I'd like to upgrade to a newer version of Malladus. But when I try to boot into recovery, all I get is a blank, black screen. If I hold the power button for 5-10 seconds, the phone reboots into Malladus and works as usual. But I can't get into the recovery to flash a new ROM. Before, I was able to run both stock 4.2-based ROMs, as well as AOSP KitKat ROMs, and flash between them. It was when I upgraded my bootloader to 24a (when the VS980 KitKat OTA came out) that this started happening, so it looks like it's a result of that.

I read about using AutoRec to fix this problem, but I didn't know if you needed to be on the stock ROM, or if you could also use it with a stock-based ROM, like Malladus. Can anyone confirm this? I would've posted in one of those threads to ask instead, but it looks like I'm not allowed to post in development-related threads yet, since I haven't made enough posts.
