I think that you need help for your HTC One M7 and not M8
It's a little difference but it will be good to be more specific in the elements of your terminal.

What do you mean by

what is the difference between recovery, fastboot, factory reset

Factory reset, if you use TWRP, it's wipe cache - dalvik and data

But if I understand what's exactly your problem: your pattern lock is blocked and you cannot access to your device, is it correct ?

Try this:

Before you perform this unlock you must remove the sim card and sd card or it will not reset!

1, With the phone turned of, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.

2, Wait for the screen with the 3 Android images to appear, ONLY then release the VOLUME DOWN button.

3, Press VOLUME DOWN twice to select "CLEAR STORAGE", and then press the POWER button..

4, When asked to "CONFIRM", press VOLUME UP

5, Finally "REPLACE" the SD Card and SIM Card to restore settings and contacts and you're away!

or try this:
Locked Out? Learn to Crack the Android Pattern Lock
