Changing the kernel shouldn't impact this module if you otherwise remain on stock ROM.

I have no experience of doing that, but I'll look into it. Any hints on where to find decent instructions would be welcome. The ones I've found so far are sketchy, at best.

tried the KTU84L-Tethering. boot TWRP - install - wipe cache & dalvik - upgrading - endless boot.

It works. Here is the correct way to avoid bootloop:

First flash enabletether, wipe cache, reboot > bootloop
Then flash original framework-res, reboot > ok
Reflash enabletether, reboot > ok and tethering enabled.
