[Discussion] Android Version & Our Device - GT-S5830

Introduction:-

We know, our Ace (GT-S5830 aka Cooper) has different android os versions.
Staring from Gingerbread to the latest KitKat.

Our device is a "Low End Machine" and does it can handle OS versions having higher hardware capabilities?

This is the discussion thread to share your views regarding different android versions.

You can discuss the Features, Bugs, Merits, Demerits, Stability, Battery Life, Internal Memory etc...

Remember, this isn't a thread for discussion about the Best ROM.
XDA rules does not allow Best ROM?-thread.

Aim: Help users to choose the correct android version for their Ace.

First of all I'll share some of my views & experience while I'm on different android versions.
Some of my opinions may be wrong; but we can conclude it together.

This is the latest android version and It's available for our device through
CyanogenMod and other AOSP Builds.

Android KitKat:

  • New system UI
  • Enhanced notification access
  • Improved Alarm App, Dialer, Contacts...
  • Multi-Window Support
  • More Apps Support
  • Multi-Language Support
  • Complex rendering supported for Indian Languages including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam etc...
  • ROM Size: Above 100 MB
  • Live Wallpaper Does not work in now available builds
  • Video Camera does not work on most of the builds
  • Internal Memory: Very low; if we doesn’t have sd ext partition.
  • Battery Life: Higher Battery Drain without proper tweaks.
  • Annoying hyphens (Dash (-)) in contact numbers.
  • No Horizontal Calibration Option in CM and Other AOSP Builds.
So there are problems with Google Sky Map like tools.
  • Improved support for "low RAM" devices. So this would be better than JB/ICS on Ace.

  • Lots of customizations.
  • Apps Support is less coz it's <4.0+
  • ROM Size: Smaller ROM Size
(Most of them are below 100 MB) compared to Stock 2.3.6 & 4.0+ ROMs
  • Internal Memory: Good Internal Memory and RAM Management.
  • Battery Life: Better Battery Life.
  • Complex rendering is NOT supported for Indian Languages.
  • Annoying hyphens (Dash (-)) in contact numbers in most of the CM Builds.
  • No Horizontal Calibration Option in CM and Other AOSP Builds.
  • USB Tethering Bug in Most of the Builds.

Among ICS, Jellybean, and KitKat, I'd go with KitKat. It doesn't lag as much as in ICS or Jellybean. And i used int2sd to boost the pathetic internal memory of the Ace.

Kitkat !!

Up till now I had used all versions of Android but I like Kitkat. It doesn't lags as compared to others only main problem is it restarts automatically, sometimes date & time are not accurate(It goes back into past & also notify miss calls of that time).New Dialer & Speed dial option is awesome.:good:

I already have tried all the android os versions available for ace.

for me it goes like this:

best: 2.3.6
2.3.7
kitkat
ics
jelly bean

Nothing will beat the stability of stock 2.3.6 roms :cowboy:

I would love to see a themed 2.3.6 rom for our ace

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
compare rom features

If this thread is still active?

I have used many roms on xda for my s5830
A year or so ago most were themed stock roms.

True ics, cm9 and later roms killed the ace. It simply didn't have the horsepower.
I never like the sdcard space boost idea, the early versions were unreliable.
Maybe now that faster sdcards are available and F2FS has matured a little, things might be different?
Have you guys tried this? The f2fs should "spread the wear" on the sdcard..in theory.

I recently helped with kitkat (cm11) on a low-end tablet and was surprised with the results.
Its not as fast as froyo was, but quicker than anything else, and the features it brings are great.
Lately cm11 has really matured, do you think it might offer benefits to our ace?..
The stumbling block seems to be with older hardware support, and not enough space.

Of course on the ace, with the small screen, perhaps most of these new features are wasted?
Its a personal choice here...
For me with not so good eye-sight, function and large easy to read text is more important.

I really like "really-dark-slim" with white text on black background, on all apps, and a quick loading and responsive rom.

Perhaps the best/easiest way is how it was done in the past, theme stock roms with new features and ideas?
What do you think?

My favorite preference would be:

  1. 2.3.6
  2. 2.3.7
  3. Ice Cream Sand witch
  4. Jelly Bean
And so on.. :)

The best battery back up I got from both ice cream and stock

The best stability I got from stock (of course :silly:)

The best performance I got from 2.3.7 :D

I have a Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 and I keep getting email messages saying my security is not up to date. How do I do this? Is there an easy way for someone who knows nothing about these things. I am in Australia, don't know if that makes any difference to things. Thanks very much.
