Fixed!
Reference my last posting, a BIOS upgrade applied via the XP partition and a restart enable the legacy Radeon drivers to install.

MANY thanks to all the kind and very clever people who've contributed to this thread, and pointed me in the direction of the excellent legacy Catalyst download.

I'm running windows 10 having upgraded from XP and can't find the driver package by browsing. Please can anyone advise me further?

Black screen problem
Hi,

After having a success with the Legacy ATI Catalyst download to restore operation of my Radeon X1600 on an old HP Pavilion desktop, the computer has now taken to booting up in black screen (but with mouse cursor) before and after log-on.

Reverting to the Microsoft Basic Display Driver cures the problem of black screen boot, but of course the display also reverts down from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 768 again.

I have found that, sometimes, by getting Windows started with the screen blank, and entering the keystrokes for login 'blind', letting the boot complete, then using the following sequence:

WIN key + P, tab, tab then Enter

the desktop display will appear in the 'extend' presentation setting. After that, and with the desktop now in view, it's easy to reselect 'PC screen only' by the same process, and yet the desktop remains displayed.

Shutting down and starting the computer again goes bak to black screen. Can anybody tell me how I can get the display working properly please?
