Are your soft keys disabled? If they are disabled via build.prop edit-it will crash now on tap-that is why I am trying to use the layer file in the OP - that resizes the soft key bar to 0, so it isn't visible but technically it is still there and Now on Tap would work. I am having an issue though-even though I have root-it won't allow me to copy the file to vendor/overlay in order to work. Look at my previous post above yours.Hi guys,
i have a problem on latest Nougat (March update) on my Angler. When i try to enable "Now On Tap" on Longpress the System UI is crashing. Is there any workaround?
Hm, I don't know why the vendor partition is read-only on the 6P atm. You could check this workaround: https://xdaforums.com/nexus-6p/help/substratum-legacy-applying-themes-t3546939I have tried this on my 6P and it won't let me write anything in the vendor dir at all...I do have root and I am able to use the build.prop edit to hide the soft keys, but I would really want to use the layer file instead. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

You can run this:
settings put global policy_control immersive.navigation=*
in a terminal App with root permissions.
This will hide your navbar like the immersive mode in gallery apps.

Okay, I understand. But I would need to use a custom rom, correct? I am on Stock for now, so I can't use any substratum layer. :-/Are your soft keys disabled? This is handy to know and works nicely in a Tasker shell command, in order to imitate the old easily toggled KitKat expanded desktop on Nougat. Thanks, I took a guess that to reverse the effect, run the same command without *, but if there is a more appropriate syntax for that please let me know. Sotty for the OT, I would only play with that because I have LMT.

Which Layer file do you mean exactly, the framework thing?
Use root shell commands.Hi LineageOS has now onehanded mode but its activated by sliding over the navbar which I have removed to use pie control, could you maybe add an option to activate it in the pie controlles?
You don't need a custom rom, you can use it on stock, as long as you are rooted and have read/write permissions to the vendor folder. Yes, it is the framework thing.
My 6P won't let me place it there...it says I don't have write permissions, even though I am rooted. I was looking into the work-around noname81 provided, but I don't think it will work...
It isn't a partition size for me. I have noticed that the error says it cannot write to it becuase the partition is in use....OK, i am also not able to install the Framework to the \vendor\overlays folder. I remember that i always was able to resize the SYSTEM partition with TWRP. I recently noticed that i am not able anymore in 3.0.3.0 because the option seems to be gone. It is a partition space problem that we can´t write to vendor.
This is because you most likely activated assistant from a screen other than your home screen using the "ok Google" command. After this, activating Assistant using LMT works as well. Restart your phone, try to activate Assistant via LMT (without using "ok Google" first) and you will see that System UI still crashes. It isn't a partition size for me. Anyway-after Google introduced Assistant to a lot more phones, I can now use it even with disabled nav bar via build.prop. So I don't need to use the framework file anymore. If you have gooten the update to Assistant, try it. It works.
Here is a quick video, showing that it works now -

i read through the thread but am still confused if there is a way to completely remove the navbar on a pixel. i don't want to do the 'immersive everywhere' command because i only use LMT at the bottom and immersive would keep popping up the navbar. i saw something about placing the layer apk in /vendor/overlay, but I have no such directory in /vendor. the qemu trick is reportedly unstable and causing force closes. Help?
edit: created overlay/ myself, placed the apk there, then installed the layer through Layers Manager. is there a way to do it via substratum?placing the apk and rebooting should be enough; no need for layers manager or substratum. navbar gone!

fx (file explorer) app with the root add-on installed:
-> options -> filesystems -> /vendor (all the way down) -> root tools -> allow remount -> I agree/OK -> root tools -> mount read-write -> root tools -> open (as root)
also, the directory is overlay, not overlays
this is how I did it on my pixel
I think I have a problem. There is not enough space on my Angler...
wasnt lmt launcher a wm app which allows to start apps with different finger gestures on screen?
