No luks is not the same as truecrypt.
(And you should really update to veracrypt or the others btw)
Freeotfe will mount luks containers in Windows.
Luks mount easy in Linux.
I have not found a guaranteed way to mount truecrypt containers in android yet
But I have heard of some apps that claim they can.

When I open the app, it says "Failed to extract from apk" or something like that and it instantly closes.

EDS is able to do it, it's paid.

Edit: Just realised this is apparently dead, which is sad.

Sometimes unmounting fails because there is a file opened by another application (Device or resource is busy). Add 'umount -l "${mount_path}"' to handle it.

Thanks.

Try EDS (paid or free lite version), works ok on my devices (Samsung stock Android 6.x and Lineage 14)
You could try free Cryptonite (beta, last update in 2015)

You can extract the binary manually (from the apk) and use it directly in the shell.

I'm wondering how they do it. There is no obvious (cryptsetup) binary in the apk and (correct me if i'm wrong) the app is not using root.

Horribly buggy and slow (fuse based). He tried to fix it in the latest releases but its not even clear if its not upstream related (where it is dead as well).

Here is a native cryptsetup binary for those who can handle it.
