I meant Adaway is the latest, 4.3.1. Looks like your suggestion worked, thanks a lot!
Same problem, adaway root access denied, everything else asking for and getting root access, tried systemless hosts reinstall, no change, also adaway 4.3.2

Clear its data and open again it should ask.
Assuming you are using Magisk, go to Magisk manager -> hamburger menu (top left) -> superuser and toggle Adaway on.Same problem, adaway root access denied, everything else asking for and getting root access, tried systemless hosts reinstall, no change, also adaway 4.3.2

Some devices have trouble with broadcasts that affect Magisk granting root. Are the apps that do have root from before a Magisk update? Was MM hidden before a Magisk update?
Try toggling Magisk hide off then on. Try the canary build of Magisk. Make sure to use the corresponding MM.
Try reading the OP and wiki then search the thread to know why and what can be done.Hi, i've a problem with Adaway, it doesn't block all ads.

@PerfectSlayerHi all,
Quick question about the next version: who is really using the custom location and symlink feature?
This feature allows you to select another location to install hosts file and check there is an effective symlink from /system/etc/hosts to this location.
As Magisk tends to be the primary way of rooting its device, it does no more seems useful.
As the hosts file is no more stored on /system partition, there is no more free space partition issue to require to use symlink.
Please share any feedback on this feature because I am evaluating its removal. Thanks! :highfive:
NOTE: It is planned for the V5. So if you still need this feature for some older devices on very rare use cases, V4 will still be available. V5 is dedicated to the latest versions of Android where Magisk seems to rule the rooting community.
Personally, I'm happy with its removal.Hi all,

@PerfectSlayer
No need for this in my case; I use the systemless mode with magisk since I've installed AdAway .......

Hide tag does not help/work on XDA labs app.<Moderator Edit>
Full OP quote removed.
Please do not quote large posts.
Or please use HIDE tags when doing so
Thanks!!
Even on my devices with super-su (cause Magisk is unsupported on the kernel version used on them) I did not use the symlink feature. Usually there is a lot of free space on /system partition (either by debloating the ROM, either by not using any g-apps).Hi all,

No way because without root privilege you cannot change the hosts fileIs there any way to install this on unrooted phone? I have Xperia XZ2 Compact and I just can't unlock the bootloader because I'd lose functionality. And none of the available hosts locations work, presumably because no root.
Most probably an android problem. Maybe open an issue report on GitHub.I use Adaway non-rooted via VPN on a xiaomi redmi note 13 pro+. It works fine, except that it does not automatically start after a reboot. Any ideas why not?
I did:
Ever since I set the Always-on VPN, I get a message after reboot (before providing the unlock code for the first time): "Disconnected from always-on VPN — Change network or VPN settings".
- Selected "Background autostart"
- Set Battery saver to "No restrictions"
- Set Always-on VPN in preferences
- Set Block connections without VPN" in preferences
Adaway is supposed to start automatically after a reboot, right?
Thanks for helping!
It's always blatently (NEVER automatically )asks me on a data clear, just tried it and gotI have been using Adaway, both rooted and non root versions, for several years. My phone broke last week, and while I wait for a replacement I am using a borrowed stock Oneplus 9. It is running Android 14, with no other VPN apps. When I install Adaway, it installs the root version, so I get a systemless host error. It used to install the correct version automatically, is there any way to force it to install the non root version?
GitLab, like GitHub do not set LastModified HTTP header so update status is not supported... yet!Is anyone using a hosts list hosted on Gitlab? It keeps showing "Unknown update status".
It works well here. I failed to reproduce as I change the HTTP client library and how I use it.Hmm, not working for me for this URL, v4.1.0 shows something like not updated in -360 days (some large negative value). Can you please see if you can reproduce?

Not really. You could choose a lot of different mode. All the F-Droid apps I know of have manual push updates to the store.
Isn't automatic build basically for nightlies?
Thank you so much! :highfive:I exist still... do you know what i have to do to transfer ownership? if i edit project it doesn't let me change the primary author so i assume i have to PM some higher up to make this happen?
Thank you too!
