I can't toggle USB Debugging with the USB cable plugged in, the phone tells me to unplug the USB cable before I can toggle it on or off. If I do that, it instant ly locks up OCR.

I can't believe this is this hard, I HAVE to be doing something wrong. I've unistalled all antivirus and tracking software frm the phone and am even back on the stock "TWLauncher", hoping the apps I removed, are causing the issue. No good there either.

ANyone in the Dayton, Ohio area care to make a few bucks??? lol

Sorry, don't know about Samsung. I didn't have luck with windows 8. Had to use my old XP. But if you get all the way to step 7, seems like it should work. Maybe you will have to try Odin. I seem to recall someone saying that with Samsung, you first install recovery, and then busybox and superuser. But I might not remember correctly.

I have a ZTE Blade phone successfully running Cyanogen Mod's Gingerbread. It was easy to install, (if I remember correctly) it was automatically rooted, much less buggy than the phone company's Gingerbread, no advertising or bloatware, though you will have to reinstall your apps from Google's Play Store. I recommend that you install Cyanogen Mod (i.e. replace the existing Gingerbread Operating System). Cyanogen Mod is free & for your phone, download & installation instructions can be obtained at:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Galaxysmtd_Info

Note that "The install guide assumes the Galaxy S is running Android 2.3. Official CyanogenMod support is for ONLY for the International Version (GT-I9000), Bell Vibrant (GT-I9000M), and Telcel Galaxy S (GT-I9000T), NOT any other Samsung Galaxy S variant.".

PS I do not make any guarantees about the successful installation or potentail bricking of your phone.

@ broderp

I just stumbled into this discussion but I assume you are trying to root a Fascinate. I could not ever get SOC to work on my Fascinate either.
I believe you have a Samsung Fascinate.
If so this thread will give all of the correct info that you need to root or unroot and apply any custom rom to your phone. Don't be impatient and spend a little time reading at least the first page in this link. It has links to every file you will need. I don't know for certain that all of the links still work but if one doesn't then do a google search for the necessary files. That usually turns up something useful for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1238070

This thread has definitions and very detailed descriptions of most if not all of the terms that are unfamiliar to you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1513143

I knew nothing about rooting when I got my Fascinate and these two threads got me started. They will talk about download mode on your phone when referring to using odin which is a program like SOC but more, and made just for Samsung phones. No matter how messed up your phone is, as long as it will enter download mode you can probably fix it with odin. Please read the warnings and follow the directions though, because the one sure way to brick or a least make it very difficult to recover your phone is by using odin incorrectly.
If you decide to go this route then you will probably want to post further questions in the thread at first link. I just checked it and the person who authored it is still watching it and I will add it to my favorites list and look for your posts. Even if you don't need any more help the OP "droidstyle" would appreciate knowing that it helped you.
If you can't find some critical file or just have a question no one will answer then send me a PM and I will see what I can do to help. I still have all of the files I used and sometimes you just need more detail before jumping into the deep end. Sometimes there are things the smart people don't explain because they expect we already know it. I've searched google until my eyes dried out from staring at the computer for the one tiny piece of information everyone else took for granted I should already know.
Just sayin- been there.

Unhappy Cannot root my LG E400f!!
I have tried SuperOneClick 2.3.3, UnLockRootPro and SRSRoot for Android on a brand new phone with no success!! Very Frustrating.
