There is roughly 4 different grades of GPS:

Recreational
Commercial
Survey
Military

A standalone, dedicated GPS device (Garmin) has an inherently more powerful GPS receiver(s) and is therefore capable of more accurate GPS location without assistance data. In addition to that, its a little known fact real-time GPS correction data is broadcasted on radio waves to some of these devices (though mainly survey grade) to further increase accuracy. There are thousands of these broadcast stations scattered around the world.

So while they don't receive a cellular signal, some can receive this radio based correction data. That, and mainstream dedicated nav systems don't typically publish accuracy, and furthermore don't require accuracy better than ~10 meters for functional navigation.

DroidX | XDA App

I don't really care if this was a software issue, it can always be resolved with updates. But we must make sure that it's not because of the metal backs that is preventing gps lock ons. Without assistant, any gps should be able to lock on in 5 minutes or less on first use.

What is your damn point, we are trying to see if gps is working, not buy routing software.

Actually using the GPS not just getting a signal. Also note there are tools listed to just test the GPS functions. Not everyone has your experience with GPS. I am sure you have a software list of GPS tools that you are willing to share with us?

i am able to get a lock on google maps. but navigation does not work, just gets stuck on looking for gps signal screen.

i was able to find my location off foursquare as well.

however GPS status does not give me a reading at all and neither does GPS test app. so it's very confusing.

update -

after turning off the device and turning it back on, the problem still persists. no lock on gps with google maps. location and settings was using gps sats only. use wireless networks was NOT checked. foursquare does not work either

now, checking with use wireless networks checked...

getting the your current location is temp unavailable on google maps and foursquare is not working either.

now, checking after running GPS essentials....

now it does NOT work, as in google maps can't get a lock. nothing on GPS status app and GPS test app.

so far the problem is intermittent i guess.

Have you tried tethering or connecting to wifi while doing so? Google Nav will not work without a data connection.

Also, GPS status i believe requires at least an initial data connection, in my experience is will not function unless it is able to do the initial assistance data download (which it does automatically the first time you try to launch the app).

You do realize that some apps uses your wifi for location? The most accurate way to test is getting a gps satellite signal test. If you can't get signal, then your gps isn't working, and the google map u are using is actually using your access point as location.

i've now tried with both use wireless networks checked and un-checked. right now, nothing.

maybe my tablet is a defect. i can always exchange it with BB but right now this issue seems to be affecting some.

hopefully when more people start getting their primes they will check out their GPS signals and update us here.

yes, WiFi, i'm at work.

i've just went to ASUS and contacted them about this issue. i want them to address my concerns. i didn't purchase a tablet that won't hold a GPS signal.

I look forward to reading their response when you post it. I'm concerned about this issue, because I planned on mounting mine in the car to use its GPS features, rather than continuing to pull my hair out because of my aging Garmin recalculating all the time.

Try downloading GPS Status from the market. It'll download the latest gps data to the device making it faster to lock onto a single.

Had the same issues on my Thunderbolt, this app fixed the issue.

Right now I'm in the process of formatting the tablet and see if the issue is also in the original firmware and not the updated version.

Just opened mine, GPS does not work at all. Not a big deal if you can live with using wifi location but for those that need gps it kinda sucks.

Hopefully its a software issue and not a hardware because so far everyone i know that has gotten a prime has this same GPS issue.

I felt compelled to register and post because I see a lot of misinformation here. Let's get a few facts straight...

-GPS does not require the use of a WiFi(802.11) or cellular(2G/3G/4G) connection to get a first fix
-Some implementations of GPS have the capability to use WiFi and/or cellular connections as an option to help speed up time to first fix. This is called AGPS and only affects time to first fix.
-Accuracy of GPS typically does not increase with WiFi or cellular connection. In other words, once a fix is obtained, GPS accuracy is the same whether WiFi or cellular connections are present. I say typically though because there are some advanced systems that use off device servers to do some heavy computations and then relay device location back to the device through WiFi or cellular. I doubt this is the case with the TF201.
-Some devices have no GPS and just use WiFi or cellular data to provide a very rough (e.g. 200m) location accuracy. THIS IS NOT GPS.

I believe the TF201 has a GPS system that uses WiFi to help speed up time to first fix. That said, WiFi should not be required in the TF201 when trying to get a first fix, and the lack of WiFi should only extend the time to first fix.

Given the symptoms people are reporting, and the fact that it is not consistent from device to device, I also believe the problem plaguing the TF201 is hardware related and specifically related to the GPS's receive sensitivity. Perhaps there is some variation in antenna impedance from tablet to tablet. This could be caused by something as trivial and devastating such as manufacturing intolerances that cause the aluminum metal casing to inadvertently touch an antenna and screw up the receive path impedance.

So I just got my replacement ATP. Before I took the first one I got back to
Best buy I shot a comparison video for the GPS. The Second one I got has a
working GPS. Its not as strong as it should be but its working. The first one..
    nothing.

Both on my car hood in my driveway on a clear night with full view of the sky.
It took about 1 minute for the one with a working gps to get any signal. The
signal strenth seemed to fluctuate a lot.

Who'd listen to you? You're an idiot. :)

I suggest people trying to get a fix without holding the tablet. Try laying it on its face and back and see if you can get a fix.

Hello fellow members. I know this is not a fix but a workaround to have navigation working assuming you have a smartphone with bluetooth tethering .

I have the transformer prime nonrooted and evo 4g running cm7.1.

I used this how to video

    http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=/watch?v=d43uq-gzI_I&v=d43uq-gzI_I&gl=US

I first blutooth tether to get internet access. Uses less battery. (I didnt follow his wifi tethering instructions )

Make phone discoverable connect tablet. Hit pair on both devices, then connect internet on tablet bluetooth setting ( once done i turn off discoverable on phone)

Then enable the phones gps app (gps over bt, market free )left discoverable at 30. (I change this to 5 still works fine)

On the tablet i went to settings application setting enable mock location

I then launched the tablet gps app (bluetooth gps, market free by googoo ) and enable mock location. Then hit the connect button. And thats it.

    Add the widget tablet. Done.

Hopefully ics does fix this problem

I love my evo 4g with cm7. Does everthing i need
