Hi all,
I installed the E988 Kitkat stock (OTA) rom on my AT&T E980. The flashing went fine but there was no network/signal. I realised that the modem of E988 and E980 are incompatible and that I need to flash the correct modem for E980. So, I needed to root, install CWM recovery and flash the modem. I did some searching around on xda and found the methods to root, install recovery and flash the modem. In this thread, I want to list out the steps I carried out to get it working so that it may help others who are struggling to get it right.

Steps:

  1. Flash E988 Kitkat OTA Rom on E980
Download the E988 Kitkat rom KDZ file from here :
    http://csmgdl.lgmobile.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=FW453895432109876543213/E98820A_00.kdz

The instructions to flash the KDZ onto your device are in this thread (Thanks to hyelton) :
    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2420219

  2. Factory Reset after reboot
When the device reboots after flashing, it will ask to enter a pin to decrypt. To solve it you will have to factory reset the device. Press the power button till the device powers off. Then, press the volume down button and power button simultaneously till the screen powers on. It will show instruction on how to factory reset. Press power button once and it will ask for confirmation. Press power button again and the factory reset procedure will start. Your device will reboot after that. On reboot, you can then proceed in the usual way you would after a factory reset.

  3. Root the Kitkat Rom
Now, you need to root your device. I searched xda for a rooting method that will work with E988 4.4.2 rom but could not find anything specific. Then, I stumbled upon the method from the following thread and it worked !!!
    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=51575993

    Thanks to jarari2

  4. Install CWM recovery
To install the CWM recovery on 4.4.2, I downloaded G Pro Kitkat Recovery app from the following link and installed on my device :
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4vSbKccbcIOV1NjMDlqWUdmVm8/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks to hoangnova from lgviet forum

  5. Flash the E980 modem
Download the correct modem that will work with E980 from here:
    http://storagecow.eu/index.php?dir=Xda%2FLG+Optimus+G+Pro%2FModems%2FPanama+E980H+Modem%2F

    Thanks to hyelton again.

After downloading, transfer it to your internal SD card so that you can flash it through CWM recovery. Take care that you copy it to the "internal" SD card as Kitkat reportedly has problems with accessing the external SD card. Though there may be workarounds for accessing the external SD card, I did not want to get involved in those at the moment.

After you transfer the modem zip file to internal SD card, reboot your device into recovery mode. You can easily boot into recovery mode from the G Pro Kitkat Recovery app that I wrote about in the previous step.

Once you are in CWM recovery, flash the modem zip file as you would usually do and then restart the device. You should be able to see that the network starts working and your carrier's signal bars.

The only issue that I have observed till now with this E988 rom is that it shows the internal SD card storage from 32 GB to 16 GB.

If someone can point to some method to increase the storage to its original, it will be excellent. Otherwise, I do not really mind it for the time being. I am using this rom till the time a Kitkat OTA for E980 is released. Once that is there, I will flash that stock rom.

Hope this post helps someone :)

I tried following hyelton steps on my AT&T E980 running software version E98020g running KitKat, After reading your post at "http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2754294&highlight=e980h" I was tried installing "India E98810E_00.kdz" downloaded from link posted by hyelton as suggested.

Infact I am able to root my E980, but when I connect to LG Flash tool(Downloaded from the link hyelton provided) the error I get is connection "problem with communication between Cell Phone and PC".

In my first attempt my phone was not rooted and Developer mode was not "ON"
Tried couple of times after reboots on PC installed drivers as required.

Could it be because of mismatch from the version i am trying to install (E98010E_00.kdz) compared to one mentioned in the forwarding post (E98820A_00.kdz). Or I should know something else.

I also read that their is some TOT method to do it and was also able to connect my phone E980, but I am missing the .TOT or .dz files and could not find one. Any help you could will be huge help.

Yes I am new and trying it first time because of my comfort with Android Stock.

Appreciate your help.

Hi guys, I got a nerve racking situation with the Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped. Then my phones turns off. Interesting thing: this only happens when I connect to a Wifi spot or when I have my SIM in. If I turn off Wifi and have no SIM in, I can use the phone with no problem.

Actually I have been using the ROM described here for a while, until I took out my SIM for a few moments. Then it started happening.

I have LG E988. I did flash the 4.4.2, although I didn't do the modem thing.
As I said, until I took out the SIM, both calls and everything worked perfectly well.

What I tried so far:

-Fix permissions
-Reset app defaults
-Clear cache

Thanks for any help!!!

Okay so i have finally cracked the free space issue and solved it , the issue :- not seeing 32gb usable i.e. 23.3gb usable space
the cause :-
e980 mounts the internal sd as under /sdcard/
e988 mounts the internal sd as under /sdcard/0/

this can only be seen in recovery , strangely when in the os the default "0" is loaded and even if u choose to goto /sdcard/ you cannot it mounts to the "0" location , so the correct way to have the full usable space and the perfect non bloat rom as follows

1.Root and install CWM 6.0.4.4 or 6.0.4.5
2.Download the necessary files -
the CWM restore zip http://boxhost.co.uk/3u0c26iw2dyx/2014-05-19.06.05.14.zip.htm
the baseband zip - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ty1ri9o81ejukx2/AACyCFnq2n3ph5WRclUH3369a
these are all the files you will need
3.place the files correctly , the baseband zip can be placed anywhere in the external sd, the cwm restore MUST be under your EXTERNAL SD card path being /clockworkmod/backup/2014-05-19.06.05.14/
Under that path you should see many files such as boot.img , if not you havent done it right.
4.power off the phone and take out your external micro sd ( this is a must)
5.Hold down the vol down + Power key - it will ask you to hard reset - confirm ( This will wipe out the internal sd )
6.Reboot to recovery by holding the volume up + power key
7.Insert external micro sd card
8.Choose backup & restore and restore from sdcard1 - it will give you and option of only one backup , restore it
9.wipe data , factory reset, wipe dalvik cache
10.install the baseband.zip
10.reboot to system

Enjoy & verify you have connectivity & storage should say Total Space 23.3GB , Available - 23.07 Gb

Tested on my Gpro , would request OP to update this guide , will help many a few.

Please for reup of CWM file, I would appreciate it :)

    About Nigeria 4.4.2 backup:
Hi folks, as many of you know or presume, in this forum there from all countries, cultures and regions, (I am Honduran and my first language is Spanish), then I found the task of waiting patiently and test each new ROM the E988 until he left one stock with languages and translated so that we could all use the ROM in our native language, without relying on third party software applications. Also check that it works smoothly and the battery consumption as small as my previous backup. Then after testing the ROM for 2 weeks, and found that it is the best system for our beloved G Pro, so give it a try. :)

    About Cerberus app:
I just refresh the page and just put downloading TitaniumBackup, so you can delete Cerberus app ... while cleaning my data not remember that Cerberus was installed as application of the system, but do not worry, I DON'T GATHER YOUR INFORMATION, I DON'T USE YOUR INFORMATION OR NOTHING BECAUSE DON'T HAVEN'T, so don't make a scandal OK.

    Bugs:
Apparently there is a problem with the format of the numbers of the contacts app and the sync of Google contacts.
The truth is that I don't suffer any of the problems, for problem # 1 our colleague @liamR proposes a fix while the second, I have my contacts in .vcf so I can't play it, investigating.

None of my contact numbers are being synced from google. I understand that this ROM does not like dashes between numbers stored in google contacts. Short of changing all numbers on google per the post below, is there a simple fix? Any build.prop changes that will know which number formats to read?

    http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=52789549&postcount=66

    Loving the ROM though..

    Update:

I manage to solve the Name ID problem. Apparently in 4.1.2 when you save a number to contacts the number format wasn't an issue you can save XXXXXXXXXX or XXX-XXX-XXXX or whatever, in the new 4.4.2 HK you have to save in XXXXXXXXXX format, then you'll not have a problem like I had. I fixed it by editing all my contacts in my google account (you have to turn off Contacts sync, clear Contacts and Contacts Storage on your device first otherwise it will change it back then you can turn Contacts sync back on).

My first impression from the battery is good, it seems to last a bit longer than in Jelly Bean.

I only disappointed about the missing ART and it seems that LG removed the TRIM function (the device gets less smoother after a while). The TRIM part can be solved by using LagFix, but be careful it can kill your device.

Worked great. This version of KK is way faster then any of the other versions i have tryed, like sphinx.
There is no lag at all everything is snappy and smooth as butter. Getting LTE. Wifi works. Havent checked speaker phone yet. This version of 4.4 with a little xposed framework. Will be my daily driver for a long time. Will run a couple battery cycles amd c how battery life is.

    Thanks

I'm pretty impressed with this so far. :] There are some fun little things that I never knew about, like swiping up from the Home Button brings up Google Now and Quick Memo. So far my service has been just about the same when it comes to LTE, and no lag. Yet. I'll keep everything updated as I play with this version of Kit Kat. So far, everything has been fantastic!

Excellent!!! Thank you alexisv635!!!! Work like a Charm!!!:good::good::good::good: Bravo!

    Still Uploading...

Sorry folks, but it was early morning in my country and had my first day of school in my new college, then could not continue uploading the zip.

I hope this online and, starting this afternoon and is in line with respect to the comment that I made modem steps friend @chochweet to run around with a single blow and worked as the network thought that the modem was contained in such system and not I put mind.

In terms of size, weighs 1.56GB zip so patience because my internet is 3.5-4Mbps, I hope it all works for them well, smoothly and the best stock ROM (not counting the Panamanian JB).

Greetings (remember to give thanks for all the effort)

Note: The boot animation is that of the GPE
