No, I have to get this rooted first. And I have no idea why it's giving me such a headache. Should i go through the steps again? I put the cw4 on it, and it didn't do anything. So I just flashed the one in the walkthrough again. Wish me luck.

EDIT:

I put phone in D/L mode, flashed the original cw-recovery-all to the Fascinate. Says success. I unplug, put battery back in, now it will not come on OR boot into recovery.

You don't have to root it just follow section 4

Just tryin to help add in some much-needed steps for 4.2.2

In the OP's instructions under section 4 we need to update this part ;)
...
Step 18: Once the rom finishes installing reboot.

Step 19: Reboot recovery via the power menu.

Step 22: Wipe cache and Install gapps zip from sd that you downloaded in step 3, then reboot.
...

We need to add the fact that in order to reboot via the power option and NOT the 3-finger mode, we must enable some hidden options and add a few more steps to update these instructions (thanks @bbrad) :good:

Step 18: Once the rom finishes installing, reboot normally.

Step 19: Once the phone is done booting, and you are done with whatever settings you wish, go into the System Settings and scroll down to 'About Phone' and go into this menu.

Step 20: Scroll down to the 'Build Number' area and tap it about 7 times until a toast notification tells you that 'Developer Options' are enabled.

Step 21: Go back one screen and enter the new menu 'Developer Options' and look for an option called 'Advanced Reboot Menu' and enable/checkmark this.

Step 22: Reboot recovery via the new, permanent power menu.

Step 23: Wipe cache partition and Install gapps zip from sd that you downloaded in step 3, then reboot and be patient

Seems like a good idea, but some roms (e.g. Hellybean) have this "fixed". So you might want to edit it like this:

Code:
Step 19: Once the phone is done booting, and you are done with whatever settings you wish, long-press the power button and select reboot. If a screen does not pop up with an option to "reboot recovery", go into the System Settings and scroll down to 'About Phone' and go into this menu.

Looks good to me! Lets get this added in here so we don't revive aged threads of old recoveries, and concerns about the 3-finger press of death.

I just got a fascinate bc I broke my other phone and this was free to hold me until upgrade time.

Ok, I've read through a lot of this thread (took forever) and I'm running Geewiz ROM. But I wanted to try LiquidSmooth or PA. I followed everything under Section 4 to the letter over and over and but every time I flash the new ROM in CWM fixed CM7 I get stuck in the new recovery and SD card won't mount. Is it 100% my problem is that I have a 16gb Sandisk Class 4 SD card? or is there anything else I can try before buying a new SD card?

This is most certainly your issue. You could keep trying over and over again until it finally mounts (worked for me one time) but honestly just buy a new sd card. I suggest a Samsung brand class 10 sd card because I've heard of Sandisk cards having issues on this phone. Good luck.

Seconded on the these phones not liking Sandisk. It's crazy how finicky my Fascinate is when it comes to SD cards

depends on what you want to achieve,,,
You can use section 4 of this guide and get your fascinate running on the newest jellybean 4.2.2 ROMs,,, just look in the development section for all the up to date ROM information, but follow the rest of section 4... If you run into problems we are always here to help.
Good luck

Are the links at the beginning still up to date for rooting and cwm recovery?? The more I look, the more different ones I find. Found many different links, dating back a long time ago!

Also I'm having trouble with win7 recognizing the fascinate. Device not recognized, no matter what I do. And after downloading and installing the drivers, it doesn't even recognize my captivate anymore! ← helllp! Lol.

Thanks,
Aaron

I'm kinda new at helping, but I've been flashing and rooting forever. That being said, are you using the USB that came with your fassy? Mine is pretty picky on the cord that I use

Yep, that was it. Changed cord out and it all went well.

New question. lol

Her fassy is on cm 7.2, Do I need to Odin to stock and repeat all the steps to flash some of the newer roms with JB?(cm10.1) or really the carbon http://goo.im/devs/carbon ive read conflicting posts about it, and also what about bootloaders?
Guess what Im asking is, since hers is cm 7.2 and i guess gb 2.3.7, do i just wipe all and flash new rom? or revert to stock and start from there?

And thanks for the answers.

On my captivate, I just wiped and flashed the 10.1, coming from 7.2...

Help

Hi All,

I have been working on rooting an old fassy and I have installed 4.1 skanky.

I was able to reach step 18 of section 4. When I whip the cache and install the Gapps. I run into problems during the reboot.

the phone loads up and I get to the lock screen, but as soon as I unlock the screen I get the following error:

"unfortunately the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped fascinate after rooting" and when I hit ok I get the following error"unfortunately, setup Wizard has stopped" and these errors just loop. Any idea what I did wrong and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks

I had a little trouble after flashing ROM and gapps. It let her log in to Google upon boot, and started downloads as normal but went BACK to login and would not go out of screen and every app that tried to auto download failed, I just simply rebooted and all was well. She rather manually download what apps she wants anyways. So it worked fine.

still an amazing walk though. just wanted to give huge thanks for the idiot proof guide! finally got this Fascinate up and running and my GF will be super happy!

well, 3.1.2013 gapps say they're installing in CWM but on reboot they're not there. Running CM10.1 6/14.

EDIT
did the whole thing over again, and this time the v4 Recovery would let me wipe the Dalvik cache. also, i installed Gapps right away after ROM install, instead of making the mistake of letting the phone boot first then going back into Recovery (Cyanogenmod 10.1 installed CWM 6.0.3.1) and then trying to install gapps...

so i tried flashing to 4.1 from 2.3 on my ntelos showcase and now it just boots to cwm recovery

I had to flash twice. And I seem to constantly wipe data and cache in between the flashing ROM and after, before gapps. A lot of ROMs have their own recovery, or a different type, so after flashing, I goto advanced, and select reboot recovery. Brings up the new recovery.
Probably not needed, but this process has worked for me on numerous phones with different ROMs and haven't had a problem yet.
But, I know when I came from 2.3, I had to flash twice, first time didn't take. Keep trying , you'll get it.

Heck, I just noticed I'm still flashing the 20130301 gapps. Its what I have on my SD. Maybe I should update to the newer one. But they're working on all the new ROMs, as I've been trying them all! Haha. New flash junkie here.

*For those currently on a ICS rom and want to upgrade to a Jellybean rom or vise versa. Just download the rom of choice to sd, boot into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, then flash rom...should be no need to go all the way back to stock unless your having alot of issues with force closes and what not.

*If your getting "E cant mount sd card" or "sd card damaged" errors then I suggest replacing your sd card with a class 6 or higher

Section 6: How to root stock froyo or gingerbread(This is not needed if your flashing a custom rom)

    Downloads these files to PC,

    Samsung drivers- http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25089906/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe

    Odin (computer program)- http://www.mediafire.com/?429fcpdtpckkcea

CWMALL 2.5 (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it)- http://www.mediafire.com/?6x5utoca59et7o9

"su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders)- http://www.mediafire.com/?38vozx7n37u02a5

Modified stock Froyo kernel (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it). This file is only necessary if you're rooting Froyo. It's not necessary for Gingerbread- http://goo.gl/QCYxT

    Instructions:

    1. Install Samsung drivers on your computer.

    2. Open Odin on your computer. (You may need to disable antivirus programs on your computer and/or phone for this to work properly.)

    3. Power off your phone and remove the battery.

    4. Plug the stock USB cord that came with your phone into a powered USB port on your computer (usually on the back of the computer).

    5. Press and hold the "volume down" button on your phone, and continue to hold it while plugging the USB cord into your phone. This will put your phone into download mode. You'll see a large yellow triangle on the screen of your phone. (Let go of the volume button at this point.) You will also see one of the small boxes in Odin turn yellow, as well as "Added" appearing in the message box.

    6. Click the PDA button in Odin (NOT the PHONE button) and navigate to the "CWM2.5_Voodoo.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier. This file does not include a voodoo kernel and will not perform the voodoo lagfix conversion. It's only named as such to note that it is compatible with voodoo kernels.(make sure auto reboot is unchecked, although it should be by default)

    7. Click START. When this process has finished, you'll be notified in Odin (succeeded 1 / failed 0) and your phone's screen will go blank.

*** Step 8 is only for rooting Froyo. If you're rooting Gingerbread, skip Step 8 and proceed to Step 9. ***

    8. Unplug your phone and click RESET in Odin. Repeat Step 5 to get the phone back into download mode and recognized by Odin. Using the PDA button, navigate to the "stock_kernel.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier, select it, and press START. You'll again be notified in Odin once this process has completed (succeeded 1 / failed 0).

    9. Unplug your phone and re-insert the battery.

    10. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons. While holding them, press the power button. Hold all three simultaneously until you see "SAMSUNG" appear TWICE. This will boot your phone into CWM 2.5 red recovery. If your phone boots up normally here and not into recovery, just wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.

    11. Using the volume rocker, navigate down to "Install zip from sdcard." Highlight it and press the power button to select.

    12. Navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and select with the power button.

    13. Navigate to the "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.

    14. When you're advised of completion, press the MENU softkey to go back to the previous CWM Recovery screen, then highlight and select "reboot system now."
