I don't customarily use backups, so that was not my focus.

Odd, the lunfile mapping in my version never caused any issues with backup. Perhaps the original modded version depended on the lunfile?

nah, has nothing to do with it. I used koush's recovery.fstab that we built for the SGS4G. Fixing it now.

So I have to reinstall pkgs everytime I boot into recovery

Yes. This is Fake Flash. You arent overwriting the recovery thats on your phone. Once CWM is built into a kernel, you wont have to reinstall packages.
