Well there are few others like Mixzing which might be slow for you.
ANDroid music player is another good one with improved sound etc. But none is as good as poweramp.
Tbh, i stick with the stock music player, whether its froyo or Gingerbread.
I hate Apollo so for ics roms, i go for poweramp.

PowerAmp runs smothly on my wildfire with stock rom. Haven't had any issues yet. It is the best audio player for android without any doubt. Check out the latest version.

Try some older version of poweramp.
