I've searched around and the only method I see mentioned to flash firmware is via adb. Is it not possible to flash the latest firmware on an M7 by renaming the zip file and from hboot with an s-off device?

The M8 has the following:

Instructions:
HBOOT Method
Rename the file to exactly "0P6BIMG.zip" (no quotes)
Place on root of (external) SD card
Boot into HBOOT to flash (bootloader should detect zip automatically and prompt you to flash)

Anything like this still possible for the M7?

The m7 has no external SD card. You can technically do this with USB OTG, but it's just easier to do it via fastboot.

That explains it all. Guess I haven't flashed a firmware since the EVO 4G LTE. Thanks!
