Re: [APP 4.0+] Nova Launcher - 2.0.1beta3 Jan 11 2013

Hi all, I'm using official 2.0 release on my Galaxy S3 but I want to try the latest beta 2.0.1. Do you advice to try latest beta release? Can you explain me what are the steps to install beta version without losing my settings?
thanks

Just go into Nova settings and scroll down until you see the "check for updates" option
y5yde9yn.jpg

Click on that tab, then select "Public Beta" from the menu. It will automatically download the update. And yes, the latest beta is really, really nice... I suggest trying it. :)

How could it be forgotten ?
This particular demand is almost reminded by spammers every day, one of them not pretending to be a dead grunge group leader ...

Wait... Kurt is DEAD?! And here I was, thinking how awesome it is that a big time rock star has time to slum it with us lowly Android folk! :p

Re: [APP 4.0+] Nova Launcher - 2.0.1beta3 Jan 11 2013

Some times I feel that requests to keep launcher bloat free and light isn't considered as a "true" feature request like the these animation requests etc.
If there's a request to keep bloat at minimum and request to add animations, Kevin may choose either one. So, not adding more animations doesn't mean that that request isn't noticed, but maybe that another request is considered more important (even though it necessary doesn't get mentioned anywhere).

So my vote goes for: no more bloat.. :)

Just my 2 cents.. I'm not trying to offend anyone nor this post is directed against anyone's earlier post :)

Im not sure adding more animations to choose from will slow the launcher, but lets say it does, why not add an option that says, get more animations online. Then you dont click that option and I do. Then everyone is happy :D

Yeah if that could be done, why not? Maybe some kind of module/plugin system..but I'm not a dev to say what works and what doesn't :p maybe Kevin has already gave some thoughts to this...and he'll do..what ever he'll do :D

What is wrong with you, people? Just enjoy the launcher.
I was also like 'needs moar transitions' at first, but it's not set to 'none' - nice and smooth, and I actually like it that way.

2.0.1 beta 3 just went bats**t crazy on me for a minute.

I set "Fast for Facebook" as a swipe option for FriendCaster, which is in a folder called Social on my home screen (also includes Reddit is Fun, Bacon Reader, a shortcut to XDA for the Tapatalk forum app, and Google+). Well, I can't open Fast by swiping up on FriendCaster. It does nothing. Frustrated, I try a long-press-plus-swipe, and that just tosses FriendCaster out on the homescreen, in fact on top of my photo widget. I drag it back onto the folder, and sort it (because I'm OCD like that) and try swiping up again. No luck. For some dumb reason I try the long press swipe, and again it drops it right on my photo widget. Here's where things get awesome. I go to put it back, and the FriendCaster icon is now on top of the Social folder (not in it, completely covering it). So I go to move it off, and I see that the Social folder wasn't under it. And then I drop FriendCaster on top of the photo widget (there is actually no free space) and it disappears like I deleted it. Zoom out animation and all. So now I have no icon and no folder and I'm confused.

I'm not mad or anything. It will take 2 minutes to fix, if that. (Mostly because I use custom icons for everything.) I just think it's funny. (As for my Facebook client issue I will probably drop FriendCaster. I like OneLouder's work, but Fast has come a long way. I used to hate the interface. Now it might be the best Facebook client out there.)

/edit: Social folder didn't go away, it went under the widget.

On the topic of home screen transition animations, since that appears to be the topic of the day, I only have eyes for Card Stack. I don't care for any of the others at all, including the default. I use Card Stack in Nova Prime on JB and I use it in Holo Launcher Plus in GB. Works and looks exactly the same on both and I like it like that. Just my 2¢; that is, I don't care if more get added or not. Though I do support those who say maybe more could be optionally added, e.g. how Beautiful Widgets has its mini-store.

Agreed, can't possibly believe adding new animations would slow the launcher.
And if it really does, why not take off some of the worst animations (there are plenty) and replace them with something nice like TouchWiz one?

I searched the thread for the issue, but I can't find it (I don't think this is the folder offset issue) Does anyone else's folders in the Drawer open way high?

Screenshot_2013-01-28-01-06-31.png

The folder is actually the bottom-right corner (up one), but it opens at nearly the top of the screen?

Yep, folders inside the drawer always used to open like that for me - it gave me the distinct impression folders weren't really meant to live inside the drawer and Nova was fudging it somehow. (I might be completely wrong about this of course.)

p.s. not sure if this is a heretical opinion but I seriously love the newish List format for the app drawer.

I seriously did not know about drawer folders. I made one and it opens like that on mine. But it looks fine to me. I can't imagine where I would rather the folder be.

Now thanks to you lot (and TeslaCoil) I will spend the next few days off and on configuring my drawer.

There is no such thing as a good/bad transition. There are only transitions that YOU like and transitions that YOU don't like. They are all just window dressing. Maybe instead of just saying that you want more transitions, maybe say what transition(s) you want? Otherwise, I'm sure Kevin could come up with a few transitions that I'm sure nobody would like. For example, how about the screen goes blank for ten seconds and then shows the next one? See what I mean? And to expect Kevin to randomly come up with some transitions that people will like is pretty much a crap shoot.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the customized app icons are stored? I've applied individual icons and then downloaded a theme where the sizes don't match. It would be easier for me to resize the individual icons instead of trying to unpack, change, and repack an apk. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for checking..I was wondering if it as just me. Right, I was thinking it might open right above the folder's icon, like it does on the desktop:

I'm using Nove Launcher Prime 2.0 on an LG Optimus 2X phone with CM 10. Something that I have seen on this phone, with both CM 10 as with LG based ROMs, is that when I wake up my screen and unlock my phone, applications with widgets are started up, even though I do not have the widget on one of my home screens. The only way to prevent these apps to be started, is to block the "widget updating" signal with the Autostarts application for all these apps of which I do not use the widgets.

I also have an Asus Transformer TF700 with the default Android JB launcher. There no unneeded apps are started when I unlock the screen. Could this problem be caused by the fact that I use Nova Launcher on my phone?

This behavious is annoyting, as memory is constantly used by apps I am not even using and did not even start myself recently.

Applications with this behaviour: tripadvisor, waze, beautiful widgets, mustard, and many more. Basically all apps which have a widget.

I'm going to stir the pot and say, Nova is an awesome launcher with less than 3rd world support. Nobody responds to bugs, feature enhancement suggestions, feedback let alone acknowledge your message.

That said, I like Nova but am tired of the things needing to be fixed not being so.

I've tried a few launchers and I eithet hate them or one or two important features are missing.

    Suggestions 😄:
    1. Suck it up - Nova and its support is what it is.
    2. Go on a hunt for a replacement. You said you "tried a few", now methodically try all the ones you can find.
    3. Get an iPhone.
    4. Bombard support@novalauncher.com and any other channel Nova is on with your issues with the current version.
    5. Wait for the new version (https://www.androidpolice.com/new-nova-launcher-beta-immersive-search/) to see if it improves things.
    6. Rant and complain in every Nova site/forum you can find.
    7. Have fun! It won't fix your problems with Nova, but you'll get some pleasure out of it.

For example, you could respond to this post with a snide comment.

I have a personal saying: "You're always allowed to complain." You might be surprised to find the problem gets address and if it isn't then at least you'll feel a bit better for having complained.
    1) Have been for years.
    2) Trying them 'all' is unlikely as I'm sure there are some OSS I'm not aware of.
    3) You pee against the wind don't you..?
    4) I could try that. I haven't since Nova was bought, maybe I'll have some luck.
    5) Not going to happen. They are probably "niche" at best.
    6) What you think I'm doing here? lol. XDA is about as big of Nova as it gets.
    7) "Pleasure"? I'm not sure we are into the same thing there Mr. Furry.

    - IME, being a a-hole won't get you anywhere with a developer. Not only are they only unlikely to fix anything but also unlikely to even look at anything with your name attached. It's not about satisfaction of complaining or venting, this post was genuinely to find an alternative and if the new Nova owners happen to read here maybe reach out.

It took them what 5+ years to just fix beta releases so they actually show up on the PlayStore and not just the website? Progress is being made but I'm going to try '4' with the new owners and see where that goes.

    Nova Launcher and KitKat

With the recent Android 4.4 (KitKat) update there have been lots of questions about what this means for Nova Launcher. I still need to do a lot more research and work before I have definitive answers for all the questions. However I can give a brief summary of what to expect.

Nova will be updated to include, as options, much of the Nexus 5 launcher's look and feel. I've included a screenshot of an unstable development version of Nova Launcher. You can see KitKat style light folders icons and background, circular page indicator, and transparent system bars (on the Nexus 5). These will be optional so if you prefer the darker Jellybean style you can keep it.

Transparent system bars will not be available to all devices. The system bars are drawn by the SystemUI component, not the launcher. KitKat introduces an API for apps such as Nova Launcher to request that the SystemUI draw these with only a light gradient background. Not all KitKat devices will support this functionality for performance reasons, and Nova will be unable to force it. Also older Android versions are unaware of this new API in KitKat and thus will not get transparent system bars. The exception is that some devices, such as the TouchWiz SGS4, had transparent system bars implemented by the manufacturer skin, and Nova is able to make use of their private APIs for this.

Google Now integration, in the exact same way that Google does so, is not possible. This includes the swipe to the left for Google Now and the "Ok, Google" hotword. The Google Experience Launcher (GEL) is not a stand alone component, but actually a bundle of Google Search, Google Now, and GEL. With current APIs, it's not possible for Nova to access Google Now in the exact same way that the GEL does. However I am looking into ways to achieve similar functionality. Quick access to Google Now is already possible by swiping up from the home button (on devices with navigation bars), or by assigning a Nova Gesture to launch Google Now. Some users have suggested placing a full screen Google Now widget on the left most page. I'll be investigating further enhancements in this area, but it's important to note that the exact Google experience is not possible for non-Google apps.

The new launcher also redesigned the app and widgets drawer. Google has removed Widgets from the App Drawer and now places them in their own drawer accessible by long-pressing in empty space. I'm looking into how a setup like this could work with Nova Launcher. it is not a straightforward change due to Nova's additional functionality such as custom drawer tabs. But it is something I can take inspiration from.

There are also a number of bug fixes and performance improvements that Google has built into the new launcher that I will be investigating. Nova supports a much wider range of android versions and devices than the Google Launcher so performance improvements often need lots of testing or modification to ensure they don't actually hurt performance on some devices.

SMS integration with Hangouts poses a problem for unread badges in Nova Launcher. Unfortunately Hangouts does not provide an API for other apps to access the unread count. I am looking into workarounds.

Some Nova Launcher Prime users have asked if I plan on charging again. Don't worry, the answer is no. Nova Launcher Prime continues to sell well, which is great as I love working on it.

I cannot provide ETAs. I will most likely be spreading some changes across multiple Nova Launcher updates to get them out to users sooner.

I don't have any beta ready for users just yet, but when I do you can help test by joining the beta community at https://plus.google.com/communities/103449253667195874971 and then opt-in for the Nova beta at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.teslacoilsw.launcher/join and TeslaUnread https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.teslacoilsw.notifier/join . When a beta is ready you will see it as an update in the Play Store. Please note that betas are early releases and are not fully tested yet, if you are uncomfortable with this then please wait until the final release as it will be heavily tested.
