Device wide problem with Google Play Music randomly stopping playback.

Has anyone else experienced the following?

Play music in the Google Play Music app on your KitKat device, switch apps or lock screen and playback stops. Wake device or open app switcher, playback continues.

Some Googling shows similar behaviour six months ago with no working solutions.

This is incredibly annoying as it prevents me listening to any music!

Stats:

Samsung GT-i9300
Android 4.4.2
Google Play Music 5.4.1413N.1048534

Please help before I go and buy a flipping iPod!!
