1Hi there. I had the same issue with the htc headset and the one from my vibrant. Please, verify the hole in the back cover where the headset jack is supposed to be connected. Do you see a shiny bit around the circular edge (exposed aluminium)? If so, call htc so they can replace you back cover for one that doesn't have the aluminium from the back cover exposed there. When the metal from the jack gets in contact with the metal from the back cover it creates a short circuit and you get erratic behavior. A temporary fix I used was to put a small piece of tape to cover the exposed aluminium and then plugged in the jack. It worked perfectly. Hope this is helpful. Good luck, people!
