So, MTP doesn't support direct modifications. And Microsoft's dumb way to create folders is creating a new folder named "New Folder" then asks you to name it, which is actually renaming, as it will freeze your entire MTP File Explorer window
Having the same problem. In fact, it is just not possible to modify a file or folder name in MTP Protocol and it has been defined in that way.

@TrophicFault You sir just saved me and won the internet as well! This problem has been bothering me for a while, but I've found a way to get passed it. What I do is create a new folder without renaming it, move up a directory and then go back to the location of the new folder and rename it. That seems to prevent explorer freezing for me.
Using a Nexus 4 and Windows 8.1 x64
I have same problem
Ibstalled Samsung Kies v.3.2.16044.2
reinstalled USB driver commanding within Kies - no effect
Run "folder view" - it runs standart explorer window - and after this all renames becames working!!!
Wow, I can't believe this is actually as designed... I guess not enough people transfer files to their phones for whoever governs MTP to get wind that they need to update it. Seems pretty silly to not support modification, and even sillier for any OS to include the drivers without acknowledging that limitation.Having the same problem. This is a issue with winrar. Read this to learn how to solve. < tenforums [dot] com/general-support/26931-file-explorer-crashing-when-trying-rename-folders.html > (obviously, change the [dot] for a . )
Basically, you will need to install this software called "shellexview" and disable a winrar process. Do as in the link.
That worked very well for me.
