Thanks guys, i got it working perfect with casual, now onto flashing lol
I don't know why this root method hasn't been added to the OP yet, worked like a champ for me and most other MK2 users, I've only seen a couple people saying it didn't work for them. It's a waiting game to get Safestrap (or something similar) on MK2.
As for root on MK2, it's already available (see this thread for details).

I've been meaning to update this guide for awhile now. Been so busy with the Nexus 5 and some development for it. I'll get the guide up to date soon.
Cheers
Please help me not make the same mistake again....
I followed the guide and successfully rooted the ATT S4 and installed a CyanogenMod nightly several weeks ago. Then I wanted to try out a PhilZ Touch ROM.
I started at Step 5A:
In CWM:
2. Select Wipe data/factory reset
3. Select Wipe Cache
4. Select Advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Select Mounts and Storage and format /system
Then I flashed philz_touch_6.07.9-jflteatt.zip (Lokied)
The phone wouldn't reboot, it was stuck at the "Samsung Custom" screen (Unlocked padlock). PhilZ was indeed installed successfully because when I went into Recovery the menu items were PhilZ. So I read more and used Odin to get back to stock. I've rooted the phone again and made it through Step 4 (Nandroid Backup).
Before I go any further, does anyone know where I screwed up installing PhilZ? I don't want to mess it up again.
What's my next step? Do I wipe everything listed in Step 5A and flash the PhilZ file?
Or was wiping everything my mistake?
Thanks for your assistance!
Thanks for the quick reply. Not sure if I understand...So once the phone is off stock I can flash any Lokied ROM without taking any other steps?
Philz is a recovery. When you flash that don't wipe anything. Just flash it
Hey guys I just rooted my S4 using android_root and went to flash twrp via goo manager and I was stuck in a boot loop with a black screen
try this

worked for me when I couldnt get any of the other methods to work
Ok, I know it's been asked and probably addressed more than once, but I'm OCD about not bricking my phone, and doing my research first...
I'm on MK2 firmware, rooted, running SlimKat 4.4.2. To clarify, I got the phone back in June, so whatever firmware/radio it shipped with is what I had before MK2, and I believe that means I used the motochopper method for rooting at that time. Recovery is currently PhilZ.
I've got enough hardware issues that I'm taking the unit to a service center for replacement, but I want to return the phone to stock. Everything I've found refers to the do's and don'ts for MF3, but very little about the revision I'm on when it comes to UNrooting, and returning to a stock ROM.
So, flame if need be, but after seeing too much conflicting information, I need whatever clarity I can get on which files to flash, the method, and what NOT to do.
Thanks in advance!:good:
So, what I gather about the process is that, given the root method used, I should be able to flash a stock ROM with no problem, but what I'm unclear on is how to unroot, and put the stock recovery back on, AND get rid of the "Custom" at boot.
