Wow.

Thank you DooMLord!!!

I'm totally new to this...

I just found the instructions for flashing my UK Arc S to ICS, and followed the instructions.

I must admit that I experimented with not selecting 'erase user data' and found that I had all my files and settings and apps still intact after the upgrade, with no discernible consequence for having done so. ICS seems every bit as smooth, after a brief period of slowdown while the system accounted for the apps on the SD card, as GB was.

Should I expect consequences of not erasing user data?

So then, courtesy of the links on XperiaBlog, I followed the instructions here for rooting ICS and now have a rooted Arc S...

Now... since I'm a total n00b, could someone point me in the direction of what useful things a mere 'user' of the Arc S can do with a rooted phone, please?

I'm interested in what I can do, now, that I couldn't before, including removing bloatware that Sony crammed onto my device...

Can anyone offer tips, suggestions, or redirect me to an article on the site that discusses 'root' options for new users?

And again, many many thanks to DooMLord and all the guys who made the various flash tools and updates, and tried and tested these techniques, for the rest of us to enjoy. You guys are legendary!:D:D:D

Tried this on my NEO and it seemed to work.
It has installed SU and allowed me to flash CMW, however, I am having hard time using TB to restore my apps.
Allthough TB says the restore is complete it does not actually restore anything.
It does the same when trying to unistall bloatware...it says uninstall sucessful but the apps are still there....
I read somewhere about the SU binary not being correct but when i update it in SU its the latest version....
People are reporting on the NEO forum that this method works for them so I dont know whats up for me.
Any help would be appreciated

Wowwwwww. Rooting is so simple???!!! My phone is rooted now.. Thanks DoomLord. First it was stuck in the daemon started succesfully. Then reaalised that the device should be in MSC mode. Changed it, ran again and voila im rooted. Thanks dhwanik too.. Without him, i'd'n't ve got the courage to root.

@DooMLoRD:if this is the old hack, would it be possible to root .62 fw? So that people with locked BL, don't need to downgrade to .42 then OTA update to .62.
What do you think?

    [ROOT] Rooting Toolkit for Xperia 2011 ICS [FW:.562]{LOCKED & UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS}

    [ info ]

THIS WILL WORK ON BOTH LOCKED AND UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS

ok guys so i was directed to this post:
    http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=24847709&postcount=18

where the user rasgula has posted a rooting toolkit...

it was slightly difficult to use for some users so i have modified it to make it fully automated with least user interaction ;) also as a bonus it will install busybox too...

for those who dont know this is the well known old "andorid emulator" hack/trick... its surprising that Sony left those permissions on /data partitions... Dan rosenberg has posted lots of research material regarding this kind of hack for other android devices...

Credits for this go to the person who found that this old trik/hack works on Sony's Xperia 2011 ICS firmware!

anyways the rooting toolkit is in the downloads section below

    [ requirements ]
