I like Croak. Testing something for the first time is still a big step and he deserves credit for the work that he put in from his end.

Anyways, thanks for the repost of the instructions. I can format a bit and add it to the front page so we don't lose stride. I'll also add the original .lib files in case anyone wants to revert back.

I am certainly not one to hold a grudge, if Croak was just having some kind of real life crisis and snapped in the forums, hey it happens!

But to delete information that was posted to a public forum (and then became public domain) and to actively try to undermine other peoples work and research into the device, all because why?

Because I told him I thought something might not be quite right in what he said, and then provided clear and concise information to why I thought it may be that way?

The normal response in a discussion would be to address the points I made, and thats that.

Instead he just throws all the valid info I presented out the window, and essentially replys with "What I said is right".
Um ok, well I just gave you a bunch of data that says otherwise.

I don't care who is right or wrong, I just want the truth.

So far I can present far more testable, verifiable proof for my theory, then Croak can by "Blowing it out our asses" and just being "right".

Hell what I am saying isn't even a theory, its basically fact, and a few searches on XDA or google will show you that...

And why delete the master post for the kernel, when our discussion had NOTHING to do with that post, or any of the info in there, that is just childish.

I am all for donating to devs,(and have all the way back to the Touch Pro), but would you honestly tell me you would feel fine about donating to someone like croak after all this (not that he is a dev)?

I wouldn't donate to a dev who flips out when someone comes to them with valid information.

I do have to have a good laugh at croak thinking he can just delete posts and screw us over, and then seeing post# 2 containing all the info anyways, glad I could help.
bwahaha

Anyways, done with this topic, back on track.....

As a side note, if we need a reliable fast place to store some files, like I said before, I'm a network administrator for an ISP, and have plenty of places I can stick them indefinitely.

Also I will gladly be a Guinea pig for any of Da-g's work.

Ok post #2 is up. Formatted the same as the Root thread, since this kernel also acts as a root. Instructions are very simple as well. Can you guys check if all of the links work, and if I linked to the correct kernel (I believe the 1944 one is the latest). Point out any mistakes, but I don't think there are any.

Thanks.

Just in case anyone is wondering, (not trying to get derailed again I promise)

http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=845844

This works, and I am able to pull the full 2 amps from my third party charger, hooray!

(notice that this topic was done over a year ago, before they had custom kernels that take care of this issue)

Would be a whole lot easier if we could get it enabled at the kernel level instead though, like the kernels available for the 73xx models.

Glad I could help!

Sooooo...

I am working on opening up communications with a dev from another forum that specializes in porting Clockwork Recovery Mod to devices.

Sounds like he may be willing to work with me on it, fingers crossed!

We may get to see some rom development soon weeeee

Work is underway!

I think we have a pretty good chance of getting a custom recovery on our 8.9 LTE's soon!

Well fellas, I have a priliminary/test custom CWM recovery image for our device, that should be flashable by ODIN.

I have not flashed it yet, planning on doing it tomarow morning.

In the event that something goes awry, I don't want to be stressing all night long about it ;)

I will keep you all posted!

Nice work. If it gets botched as long as you can get into download mode just flash back stock via Odin. Cwm could break the hard key recovery I think it but you could use adb commands in that case (I think).

Well round one didn't work out, ODIN hung at the point it actually tried to write the recovery.img from the .tar over.

Eventually I powered down the tablet, which it immediately booted back up into "Firmware Update Failed, please connect KIES in recovery mode".

I decided for the hell of it to try re-flashing the OC kernel to it at this point, even though what I attempted to flashed had nothing to do with the the kernel.

It successfully flashed over, and my tab booted up normally.

I think what happened there is the tab saw a failed flash, so it decided to force download recovery mode till something was flashed, even though the failed file likely didn't write anything at all to the filesystem.

Then when it saw a successful flash, it decided, "Ok we can boot up normally now"

All just guesses, but anyhow there's your update!

We are working on some other plans of attack now.

Progress is being made, I think were getting close, the sgh-i957 is kind of un standard when it comes to how its boot and recovery partitions are setup and utilized, so most of the trouble has been in figuring that bit out.

Progress is slower since a dev doesn't own it but at least we are getting somewhere. The closer we are to finding the differences from the skyrocket the easier ports may be for ics.

Well I seem to have pretty thoughly bricked my poor tab.

Without going into to much detail, I should be more careful with .pit files and ODIN heh...

The tab itself appears totally dead, no boot, no back light, no matter how long you hold the power button / vol button combos.

When you plug it into a computer, it shows up as QHSUSB_DLOAD, and cannot find a driver.

ODIN and HEMIDALL don't see it at all.

I managed to find a QHSUSB_DLOAD driver of some sort, and using QPST was able to see that it was a com port, but I can't do anything past that.

Any of the tools in QPST say they cannot be used because the device is in download mode.

Anyways, pretty sure its gonna have to go to samsung to be fixed.

Which blows, because were pretty sure our next test will be successful, but of course who knows :)

I was litterally 1 day inside of my 30 day return window at AT&T, so I decided to run down to the local store where I bought it, and was able to exchange it for a working one.

"I was just watching some netflix and it went totally black all the sudden! Now it won't do anything at all!"

A few mins later and I am back in action.

However I don't really want to be bringing another one back to them any time soon :)

I have a kernel now for testing with cwm built in. Will have the link soon.

watching progress on the captivate glide cwm i927 as we speak and it worked. ours hopefully should be similar.

we need a more testers!!! PM or reply

So i flashed the recovery. i can get into clockworkmod but there are 4 tiny menus instead of 1 large one. the commands are buggy and i cant backup.

but.....this is a working step. this means we can work off of this. so we are on good ground and we know we wont brick or mess up the device by flashing different recoveries. ty utkanos!

Original Post Gone. Formatted and tweaked original instructions. Original post by Croak can be found quoted at the bottom of page 8. Please read entire post before asking any questions. All credit goes to Da_G.

This is ONLY for the SGH-i957 and SGH-i957M (Bell).

WARNING: THIS WILL TRIP YOUR FLASH COUNTER [aka VOID WARRANTY]

NEXT WARNING: USE OF ODIN CAN DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE IF USED INCORRECTLY. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DUE TO FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

    Steps:
    1. Download and Install the Samsung Drivers for your device. Install Kies, or the latest mobile drivers.
    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=961956
    2. Download Da_G's overclock kernel.
    http://www.ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/sgh-i957-oc-kernel-dag-1944mhz.tar
    3. Download Odin 1.85
    http://www.multiupload.com/0EMX1J7RZJ
    3. Open Odin 1.85 as administrator
    4. Place the OC kernel .tar file in the PDA slot. (Make sure you do not have any boxes in the options panel checked besides the ones that were checked when opening the program - should only be auto reboot and f.reset time)
    5. Place the tablet in download mode. Hold vol up + vol down and hold power until the device powers on into download mode. Hit volume up to proceed after the warning screen
    6. Plug the tablet into the computer on a main usb slot and it will be detected by Odin in one of the ID:COM slots (will appear as yellow)
    7. Hit Start - the OC kernel should will be flashed to the tablet. Tablet will restart.
    8. Go into market and download NoFrills
    9. Set Max. Clock Freq. to 1.728, 1.782, 1.836, 1.89, or 1.944 GHz. Set your min clock speed to 192 MHz if desired. If you run into problems, set your I/O scheduler to noop instead of cfq. DO NOT CLICK 'APPLY ON BOOT' UNLESS YOU HAVE THOUROUGHLY TESTED THE STABILITY OF THE DEVICE AT THE SET GHz!!!

If you are unhappy for any reason and wish to go back to stock kernel - you can flash the stock kernel back using steps 3-7 above with the below file.
    http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/stock-kernel-odin-image-for-sgh-i957.tar

If you are still experiencing instability at any speed above 1.566 GHz, there are certain .so files (libhardware_legacy.so, librpc.so, and libtalk_jni.so) which limit speeds and can override the OC sometimes. Da_G modified these files which can be pushed to the device through adb commands. I won't explain how to get ADB working, it can be found on XDA elsewhere.

    Link to .so files
    http://www.ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/moddedfiles-i957.zip

ADB Commands (do the following once for each file in the .zip):
    adb remount
    adb push filename.so /system/lib/
    adb shell
    chmod 644 /system/lib/filename.so
