Screw up my files on purpose to try this app.
Everything restored very well without error.

However it restored from the latest backup only. Earlier backup files can't be restored - maybe my files were corrupted. Any possibilities?

Were you using a different recovery or older version of recovery to make the the recoveries?

Here are three. I couldn't find a way to PM them to you. color can be changed.
Also where you see white, the PNG is transparent.

Hey, thanks for making this potentially useful app
i tried it on my motorola bionic with both koush's bootstrap clockwork recovery (version 5.0.2.5) and hashcodes' twrp-based safestrap recovery, same result for both attempts; doesn't recognize the backups.

paths for recoveries are...
bootstrap: /sdcard-ext/clockworkmod/backup/foo/*.ext3.tar
safestrap: /sdcard-ext/TWRP/BACKUPS/0000000000000000/foo/*.ext3.win

btw, these two recoveries are the only ones available for virtually all moto devices (besides developer editions).
hope this helps, let me know if you need any more info.

The app has been updated. Download link in first post!

Whats new:
Alpha 5
* Extract file from backup now remembers last used path.
* Reboot into recovery should now work for all users.
* App checks to make sure that busybox 1.2 and su are installed.
* SMS/MMS data can now be restored from nandroid backup.

Backup files were from Onandroid.

I have checked again. My older files were corrupted. I have made a few more backup files. All restored well. So there is nothing wrong with your app.

In the pictures in the first post there are three tabs in the app; restore data, basic info and explore backup. I don't have restore data when I open the app and click a backup. Does I have to click restore data in options to parse data from the backup to get this tab? Or does restore data start to restore data right away?

The restore data tab has been removed. To restore data click on the restore data button under options in the basic info tab. When you click it you will be given an option dialog where you can choose what to restore.

Edit: Screenshot updated to show what UI currently looks like.

Updated to the latest apps.
Report.
Able to restore back up of sms
Able to compress and decompress, then restore
Able to identify recovery. Note, I am using TWRP V2.3.2.3

Great job done!
