I don't think this was a "feature" that was ever removed. The whole point of this thread is that someone was able to modify the app so that it always showed pictures for all senders. If this was working well previously why the hell Gmail App developers have to remove this most wanted feature.
If they care for data download then they should give an option to enable\disable.
The Gmail App developers should understand the user requirements and introduce this in new versions.
Honestly don't remember...
decompile it with smali and search the files for setBlockNetworkImages or something and change that to be false instead of true.

I desperately want to be able to do this because every time I flash a new ROM or get a new phone, I've got to start hitting that stupid button twice for all my emails. I guess I wouldn't mind if I only got emails from one sender. :silly:
Does anyone know how to do this? I hate to complain, but it would have been so much nicer if the OP had taught us how to do it instead of just sharing it because now he's gone and it looks like everyone's stuck. As the saying goes: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
I think the reason this stopped was google changed somthing in the gmail codding and the devopler wasnt able ro rehack. Thats the way i undestand.I don't think I'd consider myself a noob, but I'm definitely not an Android developer, so I'm not even sure where to start. I tried unpacking the APK with Winrar and that actually worked, but the XML files are pretty much unreadable in Notepad (or Notepad2, to be specific). I then did a search for the term smali and came across Apk_Manager_5.0.2. I was able to once again unpack the APK (with what appears to be the same results as with Winrar), but I wasn't able to decompile it without getting an error. (Not even sure what that does, but based on some reading, that seems like the next logical step.)
Does anyone know how to properly view the XML files? I really want to look for that setBlockNetworkImages setting that Anderdroid said to look for.

I am currently (and have been) looking for the answer to this for quite a long time.
I still don't have it.
Is anyone else here able to provide any helpful information on this?
Thank you.
EDIT: 2.3.2 done
I noticed one annoying thing about Gmail for me. I always had to hit the big "Display Images" button to view emails properly.
So I decompiled it, did some editing, and got it to always display images period. Doesn't ever show that big ugly button either. All emails load images, it's great.
This is based on the latest FROYO Gmail. I may make a version for Eclair if there's enough people interested.
You will need to be rooted.
Method 1: adb push Gmail.apk /system/app
Method 2: copy Gmail.apk to /system/app using Root Explorer
Delete Gmail.odex from /system/app if it exists. Also delete GoogleMail.apk and GoogleMail.odex if they exist.
You may be able to simply uninstall the updates to Gmail and then install this like a normal app, it may not require root. Someone try it.
apk is attached
