UGJL2 seems to be the winner for me. Although not the fastest data speed wise, it locks onto GPS the fastest and the battery drain has been minimal. This is only with a few hours testing though.

Here's some testing I did that included bvjp3 and ugjl2 (jl3 and jl5 were some other modems I was playing with, not included in the op's list)

All tests done with phone is same physical location, position, orientation etc. moving to a different position can yield different results, so take these as relative (to each other) rather than absolute values.

UG JL2
Signal moving between -95 and -87 in static position
Mobile network type: initially HSDPA then UTMS
Data 117 ping, 5986 down, 3093 up
Data 111 ping, 5720 down, 1205 up
Data 116 ping, 4791 down, 2611 up
Data 123 ping, 4502 down, 3112 up
Data 134 ping, 6182 down, 2532 up
GPS: indoors static 20 seconds acquisition at 15M

JL3
Signal between -91 and -87 in same static position.
Mobile Network Type: UTMS
Data 120 ping, 5216 down, 1225 up
Data 114 ping, 2171 down, 1254 up
Data 135 ping, 5700 down, 1244 up
Data 131 ping, 3231 down, 1152 up
Data 140 ping, 4123 down, 1236 up
GPS: indoors static 17-22 seconds acquisition at 10M

JL5
0 Signal on 2 attempts
Initial load is laggy

BV JP3
Signal -95 to -89. Steadied at -89
Mobile Network type flipping between UTMS and HSDPA
Data 91 ping, 5225 down, 2524 up
Data 45 ping, 5934 down, 2738 up
Data 189 ping, 2762 down, 2550 up
Data 181 ping, 4689 down, 2459 up
Data 168 pin, 4785 down, 2730 up
GPS Acquisition 24-30 seconds

Installing modems

Are these all flashable using Clockwork? At work and won't be able to fix if phone gets screwed up. Just want to be sure before trying.

Jl2 is doing just great. Is not jumping around like Jl3 was doing and the drain on wifi/3g seems no better or worse than the Jk3-4 modems. GPS locks within margin of error like the others. YMMV

Looks like the official froyo 2.2 release from Samsung is out for the Galaxy S Fascinate (Telus). Is there anyone that can get it's modem dumped so we can check that out. It will hopefully be a updated JL3

http://pages.samsung.com/ca/froyo/English/

Below are the instructions I wrote up on how to capture the modem.

Instructions:
1. Get "z4root.1.3.0.apk" from: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=833953 save it on your computer somewhere.

2. Get "One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC)" from: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=739304 (we only use the adb.exe from this)

3. Extract the contents of the one-click-root zip to a folder and place the z4root.1.3.0.apk inside that same folder.

4. Place the phone into usb development mode, attach usb data cable to phone & pc, open a command prompt window and navigate to the folder with adb.exe + z4root.1.3.0.apk.

5. From command prompt run:
adb install z4root.1.3.0.apk

6. Find the app on your phone after it finishes and do a temporary root if you like.

7. From command prompt run:
adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/bml12 of=/sdcard/modem.bin bs=4096"
adb pull /sdcard/modem.bin

8. Once finished, in the directory where you extracted the one-click-root files should also be modem.bin! Zip that up that modem.bin and send it my way

TIA!

Can you post that JL3 modem? I'd like to see if it is any better here...

Edit: Misread that. Somebody help us! lol

Edit again: This what you're looking for: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=868829 ?

Just downloaded that and it says JL3, I just don't know about flashing that to my phone or even if it would work. And modem.bin is in there.

Agree on that. Using ytt3r's 7.0.1 port of Darky's, no changes except UGJL2 modem. Used every ROM I could find, GPS never worked. Now I have 10 sats 10 secs, 10 meter accuracy or better, inside the house. 5.5 Meg D/L, 1.8 Meg U/L, consistently. Voice is crystal clear.

Jl2 had horrible voice quality and made phone app fc in under 2 minutes. Only ones that work for me are jk. Jl3 and 4 causes time without service glitch at 50% and i'm in very strong signal areas.

these inconsistant reports are curious. for me jl3 does have faster gps locks. but there has been more or less no difference in data transfer on any modem. jl2 was less consistent and peaked out the same as the others but was slower on average it also did not have great gps.
i havbe used jk3, jk4 as well. good modems but no particular advantage, jk3 would occasionally report service when there was little or none.
i did not try any of the jp3 modems.

jl3 is the only one that showed any advantage but often reports that the sim was removed either on start up or returning from flight mode.

my captivate is a 1007 i wonder if there is any connection to that in modem performance?

Attached are CWM flashable 2010 & 2011 SGS modems that (for the most part) have the WCDMA 850 band within them. A I9000 based kernel (reoriented) is required for the I9000 modems to be usable on the Captivate, I am not responsible for bricking your phone if you use something else. I did some poking around with a hex editor to compare the files and was able to pull some info out:

It appears that most people are having better success with the "Aries" based modems. If you have trouble with the modems, please make sure your phone is utilizing the WCDMA 850 band and not 1900 by using the instructions below.

From the phone Dial Pad, when you enter: *#0011# you should see one of the following 3G bands:

    200px-Snap20100921_223949.png
    200px-Snap20100921_224014.png

When testing these modems please only report when connected using "WCDMA 850".

If you are on WCDMA 1900 and want to change to WCDMA 850,
    1. From the phone Dial Pad, enter: *#2263#
    2. From the "BAND SELECTION" menu select "[2] WCDMA BAND"
    3. From the "WCDMA BAND" menu select "[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)"
    4. Exit out of menu and check to make sure your band is now WCDMA 850 using *#0011#

Note: By default your "BAND SELECTION" is "AUTOMATIC", so if you want to revert your changes, repeat only steps 1 & 2 above, selecting "[1] AUTOMATIC" in step 2.

The quote below is from a great map showing the best modem per members actual experience for various areas of the country. It's a great resource, check it out and give your input!
From http://soggycashew.weebly.com/: After digging and digging through several threads I have come up with a list of CWM3 modem files for the Samsung Captivate. I hope this helps because I know its useful to have all the files in one place and not scattered throughout forums. I take no credit for creating these files I just have been collecting them to help myself and others and to keep them all in a general location. Enjoy and hope people make comments on what they would like to see on this site!

Important: Do not flash the modem with the phone plugged into USB or the charger. It could cause a no service at restart.

Also if you don't have 850mhz and don't give a crap about 850mhz, then don't do this. Just flash to whatever modem you want.

Another note: If you flash a modem that has 850 enabled by default...you need to start the whole procedure over. If you do otherwise it may not work. So it is at your own risk.....

You need to flash or be on (UGJL2, TLJL3, UGJK3, UGJK4) and enable 850mhz ONLY by going into the dialer and type in *#2263# select WCDMA and select 850mhz. Boot into recovery and flash (BVJJPD or BVJJPG). Boot up and type in the dialer *#0011# and verify 850mhz. Reboot into recovery and flash (XXJVK or ZSJPG or XXJQ1 or BUJS1 or XXJVE etc). Boot up and verify 850mhz by entering *#0011# in the dialer. If you don't have 850mhz you did not do it correctly or your phone/ROM doesn't like the modem.

Once you verfified 850mhz above, go back into the dialer and enter *#2263# and select automatic then select menu> back. Then select combi bands and then select to add wcdma850. Now select menu>back and verify the * is next to all bands. IF so Press the back to to exit and let the modem do its job.

At this point more than likely the phone will stay only on 850mhz until you reboot.... then all the other bands will work properly.

PS: If you already have JPG, JQ1, JS1, JVE, working on 850mhz, you can flash to any of them without using the whole process above. Just flash.

    Modem Test

I decided to setup my own test featuring a block of modems that have 850mhz by default and the lower block require a little bit of effort to get them flashed on to work properly with the 850mhz band.

These are speed test with perfect signal (-75db to -85db) all using the same local server. 5 runs for each and omitting the highest and lowest of each.

Rom Used was Continuum v4 (JS8) SP#59 Kernel

From the looks of things the upload is capped no matter what modem in 850mhz.

Anyways.... I'll be using many of these modems and I can tell you that I will post which modems can perform in low signal areas ( -110db to -105db which is typically no bars to one bar) without timing out or just sitting there for what seams eternity.

I will also be testing voice quality during my highway commute. I can tell you that some of these modem sound pretty bad on the highway using the phone with no BT headset.
