Just curious, what are the minimum requirements of a PC to build a ROM? Say...for one one device?

Well depends who you ask. If you ask google (I don't mean to google it, I mean the android team) it's something like 16 gigs of ram/swap and at least an quadcore processor.,(preferably 12 somehow)

If you ask Cyanogenmod it's more of a dual core with 4 gigs of ram or 2 gigs of ram with swap

If you ask me and s few guys I know, we'd say it doesn't matter much. I use a single core processor with 1 gig of ram (And a bunch of swap) Some other fella uses a laptop with half a gig of ram.

I never got a good straight answer really. The most important things are that the processor is 64 bit, you're running linux (with all the stuff installed) and you have at least 50 gigs of disk space. Preferably more. I almost ran out ^ ^

and obviously the better the faster it'll build. Typically it takes 30 minutes to 4 hours to build your first build. It took my computer 12 hours :D

I know enough about PC's to be dangerous, but what do you mean by xxxGb ram/swap? What is swap?

it's a linux thing. Swap is a designated partition or file used sort of as extra ram. It's drastically slower than ram of course. But it'll save you from out of memory troubles. I think it's called pages or something in windows.Page swapping? somethin

Ahh...OK, like virtual ram. I was just wondering, cause I was given an old PC yesterday and was thinking about putting red hat or Ubuntu on it and seeing what I could do.

If only I had the knowledge to dual boot windows 8.1 and Linux, and had the knowledge to compile roms...I may have been some major help for you guys on my desktop (8 GB ram, amd fx 8350... 8 core 4.0 ghz)

Well you can actually dual boot those plus about another 100 operating systems with a program called Bootit . I've been using it for years and its never gave me the first issue . You can run DOS , any windows , Linux and anything else you want to but will have a learning curve . http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootit-next-generation.htm

Your age is showing ? red hat is now Fedora. If you wanna do android stuff use Ubuntu, preferably Linux mint. You can use Fedora or open suse (my favorite flavor) but they'd be tricky. I don't like Ubuntu so I use Debian. What kind of specs does it have?

Installing Ubuntu is very easy these days. Just burn a DVD and the rest is cake.

Lol:) yes it is! Shows how long its been since I've messed with that stuff. But I have a 2.8 GHz dual core pentium d(I think, its a d), 2gb ram, 200 GB HDD. But I have externals if they can be used for a build environment.

Also, on a sad note...I may be losing my baby(e4gt) today. Best buy doesn't carry it for boost anymore, and my warranty ran out a couple days ago. So I'm going to see if they'll let me swap it for a new phone. Their warranty plan is the only way I've been able to upgrade/keep/afford a nicer phone, so I have to keep it going. So...I guess I'll find out if it stays or goes in a couple hours.

That's too bad. Hopefully you get a good trade. Watch out with GNOME 3 and unity if going to Ubuntu. A lot of people hate them.

Anyways it's gonna take me longer. I cannot make a zip. Unjustified Dev is helping me so please be patient?.

Good News on Mount Issue

Here's some good news concerning the sdcard0 mount issue . I've just confirmed that both the Vanir 01-18-2014 and the Commotio 01-17-2014 builds don't have this issue any longer and no need to inject twrp . In fact I took the check out of the box for injecting twrp then confirmed both builds mounted properly with the included CWM so TWRP isn't on my phone anymore .. I'm not sure if the last couple of builds were fixed as well because I haven't flashed in the last couple of days but I can confirm the two I mentioned . Hopefully all future builds will be fine as well . Refer to the OP for complete details ..

I can't guarantee you that issue won't return or even that your partition won't disappear at some point so I would advise keeping a nandroid or flashable zips handy on your external sdcard just in case and until its proven dependable . Apparently Vanir and DHO figured it out so thanks to whoever did ....

Seems as if DHO has resolved most of the original issues listed in the OP but we still need connectivity solved .

DHO has been picking some fixes and commits on the telephony issue . He says he found some major issues in last nights build and feels he's getting close to having us going so cross your fingers . He's also corrected numerous issues that my logs were showing and i can see the differences in how smooth it installs and runs .

Yes your exactly right but not yet and might not have to . That's where DHO is pluckin from I do believe . He's on it and I think within a few days we'll be good . I did explain to him about Dastin and gave him links and so he's pulling and incorporating but its gonna take a little more logging and building . .Have you tried either or both of the ROMS yet just to look em over ?

DHO he's a real beast that guy ^ ^
I watch him and the commits he does. He's good. He has a lot on his plate and not enough gratitude. That's why I'm gonna hafta donate to the guy. So devoted. Anyways, I'm gaining confidence in what I'm doing. And I think I'll be able to finally make a zip. Not that it's too difficult, It's just a lot of data that's being moved around everywhere... Again be patient. This rom is very metal

No, not yet. Just thumbed through the original thread for each rom. Right about the time I was going to flash, I realized my best buy warranty was about to run out, so I stopped and ran to bb. And found out it expired 7 days earlier, good news is that I get to keep my e4gt. S3 was sounding nice though...((I'm on boost, so no upgrades for me, I was relying on BB's warranty since I paid 300+ tax for this phone). Plus when I tried to turn my PC on the next day, it just beeped about 10 times, and nothing showed on the display. Sooo, I haven't tried flashing anything since then. BTW, does what I described about my PC sound like something you know about? I've never had anything like that happen before. Anyway, I'll quit rambling...:D

Yeah beeps have been a part of pc's since I can remember in the 80's . A certain amount of beeps and possible frequency means a certain message to you . If you know what motherboard you have or if its a branded pc you google it and then count the beeps and it will tell you whether its a memory stick , graphics card etc . I've had that quite a few times over the years but t was always something needed re-seating . Count the beeps and you can find out . Make sure the fan is running on your processor as well .

Thanks man. I've had one beep before, but it booted. Thanks for the tip tho...I didn't know the beep count told the problem.

    Update !

    1) Gapps: The proper way to dirty flash Gapps is FIRST the GAPPS then the ROM. For a clean install you flash the ROM then the GAPPS.
-- Why? Vanir supports automatic Gapps restore. If you dirty flash the ROM first it resurrects dead libs + other Gapp taint

    2) Any problems with dialer/phone, clear your data in dialer. .

    Install Gapps

Disclaimer : Use these ROM's at your own risk and please don't blame me if you brick your device . I keep this updated with latest news and advisories as best I can .

Special Thanks to DHO ( Core Developer Team Vanir ) for making this possible .
Special thanks to MTB3000GT ( Developer and Maintainer for Mokee ) for Contributing and helping me out .
Special Thanks to Dastin1015 ( Developer Team Hydra and CM ) for his work and breakthroughs for Telephony and Data
Special Thanks to all of Team Vanir for their tireless work in bringing these great Rom's to the masses .

    Latest news - 02-04 -2014

Advisory - Stick to the latest builds . Older builds prior to 02-01-2014 either have no 3G , no telephony and going further back have sdcard0 mount issues . Stick to the latest builds !!

I recommend installing DHO's current gapps found here http://www.emccann.net/dho/5-Gapps/44Current-DHO-GAPPs.zip

The DHO gapps work great and are custom created , very nice . Other gapps do work such as PAgapps . Experiment with gapps as you please and at your own risk .

Recently I started running Vanir and Commotio on my Galaxy Nexus . They quickly became my favorite ROM of choice for that phone and then I discovered they were building nightly builds even for the EPIC 4G Touch but no one has maintained it .

I was actually shocked to discover these builds . I originally went to Vanir and DHO to beg them to build for our phone and stumbled across this article . It was interesting at the time but the Rom was riddled with issues related to our device
such as broken telephony etc . Thankfully we have come a long way with DHO's efforts .

    http://true-android.blogspot.com/2014/01/android-442-kitkat-vaniraosp-rom-for_1357.html

If you are new and don't know what your doing please don't flash these ROMS until you've read through the thread and make yourself aware of previous known issues ..

You can visit the Vanir Community here https://plus.google.com/communities/111378032131473754160 . I'm not sure how much we should ask for help there at this point . I think we need to keep it here for the most part since those guys are mostly core developers for all the various aspects of the rom .

Thanks guys and I hope you enjoy these ROMs

    3G

Looks like the wait for mobile data ( 3G ) is about over . Today " mtb3000gt " sync'd the source and fixed the 3G for the most part and he uploaded a build of Vanir for us to try . 3G came right up for me .If you'd like to try his build its at

    http://www.mediafire.com/download/pr9e0ux847xqrdf/vanir_d710_4.4.2.020114.zip .

Still recommending http://www.emccann.net/dho/5-Gapps/44Current-DHO-GAPPs.zip for now . Art compatible . Be sure to try the vanir inverted theme and look at the cool messenger app .

he even fixed a few more little issues in the process . Give it a try . I think he will be submitting his fixes so that once merged we'll have 3G going forward . Again many many thanks to mtb3000gt for 3G !! He has offered to help us resolve issues and he is considering the possibility of being the official maintainer for us if he feels like he has the time . Lets hope he is able to take it over . I haven't checked a lot of the features out yet but please report your issues and maybe they can be resolved . mine seems to be running smoothly as of now .Bear in mind this is his test build and the nightlies will have to have the changes submitted and merged which might take a couple of days .

Here you can keep up with Vanir's Open status for changes , open , merged and abandoned . http://vaniraosp.goo.im/#/q/status:open,n,z

    Art and Sounds

Got up this morning and saw where Dave Kessler says " Yowza.. Today's build is gonna be a smoker. Enjoy. " Well I flashed it , checked sounds and they seem fine , then went to ART and it seems fine . I cleaned flash because i was trying something else . I'm betting you can dirty flash because the script is suppose to clean your cache and whatnot so that you can dirty flash . Mine is running perfect with no FC's so if you have problems you might have to clean flash . Give 04-03 a shot and post any issues back . Enjoy
    8
When you guys update the nightly, are you flashing dirty, or are you basically doing a clean flash every night when a new one comes out?

Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I usually clean flash so that any problems I might run into I can attribute to the new rom and not something that's a result of a poor flash technique . I can dirty flash just fine but It seems I always have some little quirky problem here or there that has nothing to do with the new rom . How can I go to DHO and say , hey DHO this isn't working when it does work had I clean flashed ? I like to be sure when I report an issue that it is a legitimate issue . We all use the same phone and for the most part should be sharing the same base problems . I can't go to DHO with issues where someone is overclocking for example and having a random reboot . If you operate outside the parameters of the phone ( overclocking for example )then you pretty much are unsupported and that's only reasonable . These guys have enough troubles trying to keep 40 phones going with new implementations within stock guidlines

Let me show you an example with a screenshot . Its pretty obvious in the picture of Commotio I just took that there is no battery issue here and yes wifi is off . Wifi has been on a few times but for the most part off . These are stock settings and that's the stock battery screen .That was also a clean flash . There's been no random reboots , not a single issue for me . Now I also have another phone that I clean flashed yesterday's Commotio on that I'm also observing for battery life , issues of any kind so I can compare the extreme kernel statisitcs to the stock kernel statisitcs in the this picture . Lets face it . yes dirty flashing can be done with decent results but I can testify flashing on a daily basis for test reasons I like to start on a clean platform . Every nightly build usually contains something new and experimental and maybe the phone will like it and maybe not .If I report something I want to be sure I flashed in such a way I can rule out my flashing technique as the culprit .

My point is if you want to really fix your phone up with all your apps and stuff and you find a really good build that has exceptional battery life with very few issues then consider sticking with it . If you want to be bleeding edge pushing performance to the limits with nightly dirty flashes then be prepared for burps , farts and hiccups and most likely poor battery life that the majority aren't having but there's really no avenue for correcting those issues via the deveopers . Here is an old rule of thumb the developers tend to go by . If you don't have a logcat or catlog then it didn't happen .

I added an additional picture of where I am on battery stats with the 02-17-2014 Commotio with Extreme Kernal at stock settings .
