Couldnt take it...

Well I tried and tried and still once the top says 3G the data does not work, it only seems to slip to 3G when I do data heavy things like YouTube and file downloads... when I look at regular webpages it turns back to H+ or H I do remember this happening sometimes with the OLD S2 I had already returned that sometimes the data just didn't want to work... Google Navigation is TOTALLY useless now from the new update, it wont connect AT ALL... even if I turn it on 2G I do want to try a new ROM and I will because I am going to sell this phone soon. (I guess they are going to stop making it this year so it should bump up the price a bit on used ones... I think I will return it to stock or give the new owner the choice but Id like to make sure the ROM I am using works 100% what ROMs are Vanilla Stock 4.2.3 or 4.2.2 for this? I see JellyBAM and ShoStock listed a lot on this thread so maybe Ill start there but Im waiting for my new phone to come in before I start to experiment... I bought a 6" China phone this one: http://www.ahappydeal.com/product-142459.html is there any XDA threads on this phone? I know there are some for other China phones and this one has a common chip combination so there might be something I can just add to.... Ive been reading up on the Android Kitchen and just how easy it is, I want to make a Galaxy S4 or Note III ROM for this phone with all the software that they are so known for.... the phone itself is a Note II knock off even with the name GT-N7200 (thats the notes numbers) so I think a lot of the software will work well.. Upgrading to a Quad core, just wish it had 2GB RAM instead of 1, but hey for $155 I can't expect everything... has anybody sold their SII in the last few weeks, what have they gotten for it? Maybe I should wait till right before XMAS and somebody will give me what its worth LOL... here is a pic even though I sure you all know what a phone in 3G looks like....

Gotta be careful with the Chinese phones! I too bought one a while back, claimed to be a note 2 knockoff, claimed to have a quad-core processor.
I ran an app on it that tells system information, and it only had a single core 1ghz processor!! Returned!!!

WoW I would hit Paypal up the second I got it if it wasnt exactly what I paid for... unless they switch something I have seen many videos on this phone and all of them are very good with the speed and just how well this phone acts for the money paid for it.... like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4XNrX9Bxm4
and besides they had the dual core 1GHz version for 90 bucks (awesome deal for 6" phone) and the single core for 70 or so.... I want to buy a ton of all the good stuff and open my own phone shop LOL

I would still love ideas about the 3G or the ROMs I mentioned... There has been plenty of talk about other phones and such I don't know why I got singled out....

I'm not really sure i understand your3g problem. I know when the data connection is dormant it drops to 3g to save battery but when data is needed it jumps to h+. Since you said h and h+are working fine i suspect it's just doing what it's supposed to do. If that's not right please explain how.

Also, as indigoak said, cm 10.1 is very buggy when it comes to data. I would try Mr cooks cooked rom or maybe Shostock3 and see how it works with those. I'm currently on Mr cooks rom and data is working just fine

I wouldn't mind if it went to 3G and was just slower but when my phone says "3G" no data works at all... it doesn't say no connection it just waits like its trying to load something but never does, it just times out... if Cooks ROM is Jellybean I will defiantly give that a try...

Correct. It is 4.1.2.

I was wondering I loved getting rid of gingerbread on this phone it was a joke imo but would it be even worth messing with on the SGH_S959G to upgrade it higher than 4.1.2? On gingerbread I couldn't install some apps I wanted but now I can use everything I have come across and wanted so far...

I don't see any any big difference in android 4.2.2.

So I flashed that new ROM and I'm having some issues that I think are going to be a dealbreaker for me. First of all tethering doesn't work at all it says one moment please there for about a minute and then just shuts off like I never hit the button. The other issue is Google Maps Navigation when I try to use it it keeps acting like someone's long pressing the Home button or just pressing the Home button it does work after I actually get the thing loaded but it will xscape to the home screen and will run minimized if I keep trying to open it it will eventually crash. Other GPS programs work fine but I like how Google Maps is in bedded in the Google web browser so I can just click on things and go right too it... I guess the real deal breaker for me is the tethering although I'm not a band with hog I do need to tether from time to time for important things... Anyone else have this issue with cooked ROM? FYI the data seems to be working now so it was cm.....

Well i don't use Wi-Fi tethering because i don't like having straight talk shut off my mobile data and i don't let Google maps anywhere NEAR my phone. I do use mapquest and it works great on this rom and doesn't wake my phone up ten thousand times a day.

I guess if I was to read it notes I would know that huh? I really like the setup of Google Maps and its navigation waze works good I guess... I wish I could have the old navigation apps back the changes they made a horrible I hear they're not working on a lot of phones... I'm driving in my car right now so if any of this sounds funny it's because I'm using text to speech I tried a free tether program and it worked just fine even though I'll let me only use it for 5 minutes so I guess is nothing wrong with it persay.... I don't know I'll look for a maps alternative but I haven't found anything that was as accurate as Google Maps what do you use?

...and when you say update does that mean I'm going to have to reformat my phone since this rom I just installed at reset and wipe built into it? Or do you think he's going to release a patch that current users can just install to fix the wifi?

    REMOVING THE YELLOW TRIANGLE

    GINGERBREAD ONLY! (Root Required)
    - Extract the stock zImage from the factory firmware at the top of this page (I used 7zip, and needed to extract it twice to get it apart).
    - Put the stock zImage on the root (not in a folder) of your internal SD card. You can do this through the usb, adb push (adb push- Copy and paste the zImage into your folder with adb, connect your phone with usb, then command- adb push zImage /sdcard/zImage), whatever method you like.
    - Now using adb shell, or terminal emulator found in the market (if you don't' have adb ask GOOGLE) issue the command (capitilazation and spacing matter):

    $ adb shell
    $ su
    # dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

    This must be done as #, if you have a $ enter command: su
    You must already be rooted for this to work. To switch to a different kernel afterwards you can use the same method, or CWM without getting the yellow triangle again or increasing the flash counter. As long as you flash internally, if you use Odin or Heimdall to flash anything thats not stock it will come back.

    REMOVING YELLOW TRIANGLE ICS AND ABOVE!
    -If running ICS or above you can use triangle away found here- http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=22462960

    - Phil's CWM v6.0.2.7 built by AJ Newkirk- (Thanks to mr-cook)-this one gets rid of the blue progress bar on the s2 boot screen, that's the only difference.

    - CWM v6.0.2.7- (Thanks to mr-cook)- View attachment 1703137

    Let me know if this link gets killed and I'll add it to Dev host.

    Flashing other versions of CWM with adb (Root Required)
    - Extract the zImage (boot.img) from the ROM of your choice (I use 7zip to extract it).
    - Put the zImage (boot.img) on the root (not in a folder) of your internal SD card. You can do this through the usb, adb push (adb push- Copy and paste the zImage into your folder with adb, connect your phone with usb, then command- adb push zImage /sdcard/zImage), whatever method you like.
    - Now using adb shell (if you don't' have adb ask GOOGLE) issue the command (capitilazation and spacing matter):

    $ adb shell
    $ su
    # dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6

    or if it's a boot.img

    # dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6

    If you don't have service after unlocking and switching SIM cards you need to flash an at&t modem like I777UCLL6 found above. Apparently the modem used by Straight Talk only works with their service.

    The op needs to be updated with this'd information...

    The latest cwm is only for kitkat ROMs, that's cm 11+. Of you want to go with jelly bean ROMs like the one you're trying to use, you need to use cwm 6.0.2.7 it's older but JB won't flash on the newer ones. There are a few different versions but any will work as long add it's philZ, AJK, or 6.0.2.7

    Since you already have cwm installed you can just DL the zips and flash them in recovery then reboot "recovery" and it will be complete. No need for Odin now. Try that and get back to us

    I think I'm just going to replace CWM with the new TWRP in the op. It seems to be easy more compatible. Plus I like it better.

    EDIT: Done. Op updated to install TWRP with Odin to be more compatible.

    since this post is in AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777 section...i thought it might be compatible. i even saw a lot of ROM posts where they says its compatible with i777 and sgh s959g....so i was in doubt and had to ask.....glad to know its not compatible...thx....

    I thought it was...a lot of the ROMs I search are based on the i777 builds just have to make sure you have the correct radio installed.....I've rooted mine and used several different ROMs just based off of this thread. Searching the thread with the search tool will yield massive results. See post#5 from the OP that's a fairly good clue.

    Ok ok ok wait... Let's clear up some confusion. The one and only difference between the 959g and the i777 is that the 959g has its recovery on a separate partition by itself, whereas the i777 has kernel and recovery on the same partition. The 959g can use any ROM or kernel built for the i777 no problem. But if you want a different recovery on 959g you must use one of the zips from the op or Odin. If you had an i777 and you flash a new kernel it will also install a new recovery as it will be packaged in the zip. If you flash the same kernel on the 959g, your kernel will change but recovery remains untouched since it is on a different partition. That is the one and only difference between the two. Happy flashing :thumbup::D
