1. Make a backup with clockwork.
2. Download setiron_v1.2_bln_with_jpp_modem_update.zip, rename it update.zip and install that package from recovery.
3. Profit.

It seems almost too easy.

Yes, that is too easy as what you saying will send your phone strait into an unusable state. This kernel is a 2.2 kernel, JH7 is a 2.1 ROM. The two don't mix. I recommend some more research and learning before you go any further modifying your phone.

What sparker was trying to say while being incredibly rude was that you don't need to rename the .zip. boot into clockwork recovery, not the stock recovery and use the options there to install zip from sd card.

Actually, what sparker did was probably save this guy from putting his phone into a partially unusable state. He has a 2.1 ROM and was asking how to put a 2.2 kernel on it. If he can't read the forums and or do his own research to discover the difference between kernels, roms, modems, and versioning, he shouldn't be trying to apply a kernel just because it's the latest and greatest thing. The information in these forums can be very dangerous to people who don't understand what's going on and sometimes they just need to be told to go back and read more instead of spoon feeding answers.

Does anyone know if we can use JI6 modem on a captivate rom with this kernel? Its working good for me while sitting still but I'm wondering if the soft reboots will start when I'm driving

v1.2.1 OUT
hopefully fixed script execution on Captivate ROMs aswell
fixed CWM option for enabling BLN
fixed 500hz setting
enabled CONFIG_UACCESS_WITH_MEMCPY and CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY as they apparently make no difference in battery use

Can't do anything about the power button not working in 2e recovery, sztupy's CWM uses a pre-built version that I'm not able to modify.

Ok, so I flashed to stock, installed JG8 modem, did a master clear, ODIN flashed Cognition 2.3.3, then used CWM to flash this kernel. Whenever I try and enable WCDMA by using *#2263#, I get a message that says "RAT selection option is restricted!".

Now I have no 3G connection on my phone at all. Help!

EDIT: Also, my home button doesnt work...

By flashing Cognition, you're now back to the JJ4 modem. You'll have to flash the JG8 kernel again, check that 850 MHz is working, then flash JPP. This is essentially what I did and it worked for me.

How do I check that 850 is working once I flash JG8?

Also, the correct way to flash it is to extract modem.bin and put it in the PHONE slot in ODIN. RIght?

You're running an I9000 ROM reoriented for the Captivate, I don't think it would be a problem if you want to flash the JI6 modem, just stay away from eclair modems and you should be fine. Try it out and see, worst case, flash back to the JPP modem, kernel flashing is so quick and easy. I drove around today and had no soft reboots with the JPP modem. I am not sure if you need to flash the jg8 modem to enable the 850 band before flashing the JI6 modem.
