I appreciate your helping hand to people in most of your responses, but following this thread, I noticed that in certain cases you're getting too poetical or philosophical. This is probably the main reason of me sounding "dismissive" in that response. It's sometimes tiring to scroll this thread pages and read your posts that escalate minor things into big discussions.

I don't think building a huge discussion over a simple feature idea is something that improves the quality of this thread. The idea was very simple and as a programmer I know it wouldn't be hard in implementation (obviously I'm talking about the method of working itself, it's hard to know how complicated are new buttons implementations in Mix's source code). There is no much sense in listing hundreds of imaginary cons which don't even match the proposed implementation.

I think the thread would be cleaner if people who disagree simply reacted to posts. If no more people are interested, the idea will die without unnecessary spam posts. An option to select a random file is a common thing in many apps and is available in some desktop file managers. There's no reason to discredit such ideas by giving coffee making examples. Ignoring things you don't agree with usually has a better effect than escalating it to a few pages of Mix-unrelated discussion (this is based on what we seen in the previous pages, not necessarily response to me).

Just to be clear, I don't have a problem with people having a different opinion than me. I personally don't even need this feature (or would use it very rarely). I proposed it as something that could make Mix even more unique file manager by having a file-selection feature than no other file manager for Android have. I even mentioned it in the first post.

I can assure you that the developer's response was just a joke, nothing to do with anything offensive or disrespectful. He probably doesn't think it's an important thing. As far as poetic and literary replies or long posts, I have adopted the method of "ignoring" the user. There is a button here in xda to ignore users so the thread is clean and you can follow the conversations much more easily....

You are free as all the users to make your own suggestions and request since this is the goal of a developer thread and the developer itself encourage you to do that (he wrote this in OP posts).

As was my joke about coffee, which was a fairly lighthearted reply considering the sweeping insult of all feedback being pointless which preceded it.

On the other hand some people will respond, especially to call out insults and barbs which are delivered in a backhanded manner. BTW, if you were actually "ignoring" me then you would not have typed most of your previous two posts.;). I encourage you to actually ignore me. :|

Agreed, and not sarcastically so, I actually do agree, because this is the same point I made about freedom of feedback. Thank you.

Thank you. Please try the latest BETA and tell me the result.
Thanks for this.
1st time I tried with no pass Admin, SFTP opened in Filezilla.
2nd time I tried with another user that has pass and STFP failed, was trying for a long time.
Later I couldn't open Admin again so maybe not about pass, but about another user.

For another problem I had with WebDAV plugin (opening same folder for multiple users that have different settings), dev said that can happen when the server makes the client store connection credentials in a cookie. Don't know if Mix uses cookie and if so, could cookies take into account differerent users and settings.

I had previously separated the following paragraph to get back on topic and to support a modified version of the original request.

IMO random playback of a folder of PDFs is analogous to random playback of audio or video, and random play of a folder of PDFs would accommodate the desire to open one random PDF (the first in the random playlist). That may not be practical to do in MiX and I would still advocate dedicated e-book readers, but it seems reasonable enough to wish for, and as a feature request that might stand stronger than a request for a random file picker across all types.

OT. I am sometimes an a$$ but today I delivered a common opinion in a neutral manner, resorted to jokes when insulted, and became the only person aside from the requester who is trying to figure out how their suggestion could be implemented in MiX. That some people perceive any logical disagreement as offensive is a common human foible but there was a cost to that in this case. Open discussion can result in differing views finding some area of overlap, as embodied by the suggestion for PDF reader only random play.

Don't know if Mix uses cookie.

If and when you get this sorted out I'd be interested in learning some of the details to incorporate in the FAQ servers post.

What you think about my general activity here is not pertinent to this topic nor have I made such commentary about you. What matters is that you requested something and stated an opinion about it, then when someone else stated a different opinion you branded all opinions other than yours as pointless. If you don't like the effect, then don't produce the cause. You apparently do have issues with differing opinion as you could not accept even the notion of discussing the topic, then you made a suggestion that is antithetic to the nature of communal forums: that people only communicate their feedback with a button click rather than discuss the merits of their opinion = just as you discussed the merits of your opinion. Perhaps it would be better to stick to the discussion about the functionality you seek in MiXplorer instead of the censorship you seek in a shared forum.

There is a difference between an opinion and between making things up with the pointless, philosophical cons that don't even match the proposed implementation. Maybe if this was an occasional behaviour from you it would be more understandable, but it seems like it's repeative towards many users. Criticizing an idea because it would (potentially) need an on/off switch is just riddiculous and it does not improve the quality of the thread/discussion. It rather looks like it's your hobby to reply to most of users post, even when you have nothing reliable to add. I just pointed out how you unnecessarily escalate subjects to the level they don't deserve.

We don't have a "Boo! Hiss!" button.
If we did, I would wear it out.
There are reaction icons that are matching the disagreement.

I would like to point out that HP has already responded to this "unique-probably-due-to-no-one-thinks-its-useful" request for a file manager:
"Seriously?! Just fast scroll and close your eyes then select a folder."

What's the point of pointing out a post I literally replied to?

(as a programmer myself, same as you claimed, we should both know that there is no real randomness in computer programmes. having a programme logic acting as a slot machine is no different than the method suggested by HP...)

The real randomization can not be done by scrolling and tapping a file. Almost always you have a control on it in your brain, and you will always skip the first / the last folders by doing it. Not to mention cases when there are just a few folders and the "random" selection depends on your finger position only. Claiming that there is no "real randomness in computer programs" is unrealistic. Mix itself uses thousands of cryptography functions (for different protocols) which all depend on entropy.

The fact that this simple idea escalated to two pages proves my worries from the previous post(s). Instead of waiting for other people to state if they are interested in it (even by the reactions) - a simple request received the attention it doesn't deserve.

the point is HP has clearly responded with no intention to implement your idea, and you should probably stop requesting/demanding/asking/whatever-ing the developer further..

I thought I could promote a variation of the idea which might be better received but, enough of that. Here's a funny thing. It would not surprise me if HP did this anyhow. They have surprised us before with unlikely new features. That being said, and to your point, repeating the request probably won't help the cause as it has been seen; likewise for my modified pitch. Thanks for that reminder.

I full understand you...this was many times discussed in the past without success unfortunately....so do not waste your time answering to those who do not understand. I resigned and got used to it.

But my reply is just to inform you that in my expierence here in thread, a new suggestion or request is not always approved from the developer because many users like it. But rather if he think it is useful or needed....

Yes, and HP got an argument back why the manual random selection is not a perfect method, and why the single-button one would be better. Some people are perfectionists and are not happy with workarounds. They prefer to have automations on the programmatical level whenever possible. HP could either respond to it again, ignore it, or wait for other users with the same idea. There's nothing wrong or disallowed in continuing discussion on forums. Such a reply can not be considered as a "bumping" or "whatevering", but referring to the workaround mentioned. The problem starts when third party users who don't understand the idea implementation are posting the imagined flaws in order to discredit it, just because it is different to THEIR vision of the file manager. This actually would be more acceptable, if it wasn't coming from an user who is doing it on the "systemic" level (and the evidence can be easily verified by reading previous pages of this thread). * By "systemic" I mean repetitive, happening frequently.

Logically, every single proposed idea can be criticized using exactly the same arguments:
- Some users would want to have it removed.
- Option would need to have an on/off switch.
- Separated apps for each file format (that have to be additionally installed) can already do this.

Such arguments are indeed pointless by being too generic, and when there's additionally a philosophical part added to them it makes it toxic.

But my reply is just to inform you that in my expierence here in thread, a new suggestion or request is not always approved from the developer because many users like it. But rather if he think it is useful or needed....

Yes, this is fully understandable. Sometimes extra arguments are able to change primary vision though, that's why it's always worth to share your version.

[EDIT] For those interested in the request for random file selector for it's own merits and the entirely reasonable discussions we might have around any request:

Initial request: https://xdaforums.com/t/app-2-2-mix...y-featured-file-manager.1523691/post-88379021

Developers response: https://xdaforums.com/t/app-2-2-mix...y-featured-file-manager.1523691/post-88422769

Request as modified with additional user input (which might make the request be better received): https://xdaforums.com/t/app-2-2-mix...y-featured-file-manager.1523691/post-88425411

Not sure where I messed up yall but would appreciate any help. Throughout the years of usage MiX hadn't crashed on me once. With each of the recent updates, however, I've been seemingly getting more and more crashes. Now it's to the point where it almost consistently crashes about 40 seconds in (less in folders with a lot of files). Worst thing is I can't seem to export my settings to reinstall because the only export path that's listed is a non-existent USB drive:

IMG_20230325_194958.jpg

Is there no way to export to internal storage?

You need to press arrow pointing down and choose different location where you want backup to be saved.
Good Luck :)

The weird USB path was the only entry in the dropdown, and pressing on it threw an error saying path doesn't exist.
However, I've just fixed this by resetting the sidebar. Apparently the export menu and the sidebar are one and the same (kind of an odd choice haha), and since I like my sidebar empty, so was the export menu.
Anyway, it exported fine, so now it's safe to reinstall.

Could you please clarify a few things in the interest of possible documentation? At first I thought that screenshot was a picture of the native OS file picker but your description implies that it is the MiXplorer UI. Could you confirm this? Also could you please share what you did to reset the sidebar? Thanks.

This is puzzling because I thought the default location for imports and exports was root of internal storage.
Hmm, so then maybe it's not that the export menu mirrors the sidebar, but that I removed the Internal storage shortcut (along with almost every other entry) from the sidebar that caused export to not see Internal storage.

The export box resembles a MiXplorer panel with a black background and that happens to look similar to the native OS picker but that may not matter. In any event I told you there might be detrimental effects to cleaning up that sidebar. This is not a criticism. In fact if you can get things working with the sidebar looking so clean then I'd like to know how. :)

Gladly. The screenshot was of the menu within the MiX UI residing under Settings - More settings - Export.

To reset the sidebar I tapped this:

Yeah an empty sidebar is nothing I can't live without but it can look pretty neat :D

Thanks. That's the bookmark reset which would imply (as did the placement of the buttons) that the previous graphic was part of the MiXplorer UI. The fact that USB drives are added to bookmarks and storage locations dynamically as they are connected could explain why that item appeared after you cleaned up everything else. Much better to have to reset bookmarks than to have to play with document providers. Thanks for clarifying.

How can we change the default app opened when we insert a USB key storage in the USB-C port of an Android device?
On my phone, MiXplorer app and Solid Explorer app are installed. When I insert a USB key storage into the USB-C port, Solid Explorer app is automatically started. As I prefer MiXplorer I want it to automatically start.

I have half a dozen file managers and not one of them opens when I use USB to plug other filesystems ( in my case usually card readers ), neither would I want that to happen though. Isn't this a preference you set up in Solid Explorer ? You could also check Solid Explorer's info within Android's Settings and clear any "open by default" for something it may have assigned in there.

As to how to get MiX to open automatically on USB use, I defer to anyone who knows better, I'm not sure there is a way, but I could be wrong. If I recall correctly, the opposite question was asked in the past when MiX would pop up many intrusive permissions dialogs when using USB, once and again to the point of being annoying * ..

On my phone, MiXplorer app and Solid Explorer app are installed. When I insert a USB key storage into the USB-C port, Solid Explorer app is automatically started. As I prefer MiXplorer I want it to automatically start.

MiXplorer is a great App, for sure.
But you do not have the impression it is slowly becoming a dead app?
The author has not sent a message for more than 6 months (last is on September 19th 2023) https://xdaforums.com/m/hootanparsa.4070451/#recent-content
As of now, is there still active development on MiXplorer? and new bug correction/feature planned?

This is normal, and very frequently mentioned by those of us who have been here for more than a decade, if you bother to search the thread :

"Developer is away for long stretches of time."

Hootan has a life, stays away for very long periods of time ( this isn't even the longest ). Enjoy a free power-user tool unlike very few available for Android in the meantime. All messages are read and replied to eventually.

All that said, there is an OP in this thread. In said OP there's an e-mail. Which can be used to contact the developer directly if you want to / need to get a response immediately for whatever reason.

Will mixplorer will ever get material you theme sir?

    As, It's 2024 now.

    @HootanParsa

Given that MiX did not jump on the 'Holo' wagon, did not emulate the 'Material Design' trend, and never changed into a 'Material Design 2' interface ... My hunch is there'll never be a 'Material You' version either.

I know, I'm not Hootan. Just an educated guess, based on history.

A reliable, useful, consistent interface that bucks Google's anemic attention span and adoration for wasteful blank spaces that puts two lines of information where you can very comfortably fit 8 lines, is a good feature to have, I would say. By Material Whatever 2027 we'll have a single letter onscreen, dark grey on black.

    (^_^.)

There are a variety of wonderful themes and skins available ( yet another unusual and almost quaint feature from software's golden age ! ) that might make it look more to your liking, though.

Thanks for citing the developer's post history (which many people who express the same concern do not check). +1 to previous points made in reply to your question, and here is a reassuring additional detail: The developer did quietly post a new beta more recently at the end of November; it has the same main version # as previous beta from September but a newer date code: MiXplorer_v6.65-Beta_B23112710. There may even be a few posts in the thread about the effects of that latest beta version on directory access (scoped storage, document providers, etc).
