So would a hard reset (saving root with Voodoo) allow me to do the OTA update? My guess is I'll have to wait for someone to create a flashable zip via CM recovery.

If you are fully stock there tress it will work. But don't forget to uninstall busybox,linked2sd, overclocking, etc.

The only custom rom I'd be interested in is an official cyanogenmod for the 769 model so to unlock the bootloader and all its trouble on this device it's not worth it to me as Jelly Bean works fine. How certain on you that root protect doesn't work though?

If u have root installed.and do ota it will give security error.
It was already reported my many users.
There is no certainty that it will some user also reported that after downloading ota , update was restricted by the device itself nd was unable to update...
Its totally depend on you...
U can try it urself and give us feedback so that it may help some othar user....
One suggestion if u r doing it then do it in full stock mode ie nothing removed/freezed and nothing installed beside superuser..(not even busybox uninstall it)....

Rooting and freezing +*WITHOUT deleting apps*+ WILL NOT screws ur phone.
You can use OTA to update.

That's why there is a RED WARNING in the OP:
+ Update from carriers (OTA updates) will not work after removing even one of the bloatwares. Disabling the apps will not affect OTA updates however.
+ Don't just remove thing because of the sake of removing it. Know your stuff!

Please please please don't be proud because you save 100MB of memory, it is 2013 where 32GB microSD is 20$, we are not in the 1990 anymore . Disable system apps you don't need, don't remove them.

Unfortunately, the Optimus L9 only has 4 GB of internal storage. So if you install large apps or games, you have to make up the space somehow. I made it up by deleting bloatware.

How about rooting phone and use link2sd.
I know the app cant not be moved to sd. but at least you can linked it save some espace also need sd particion with 1gb part is enough for game use directory bind
