Made the Sapphire version, but it can't work on a donut based ROM, only 2.x can play bootanimation.zip
It's pretty much the same as the "classic" version - I'll upload a preview after posting this
Sorry, I'm still working on the Hero version (Actually, I didn't even had enough time to finish all the pngs yet) - I'm not even sure 1.5 handles bootanimations the way 2.x does.

Just took a shot at the Hero version - anyone willing to test?

Tried with latest Cyanogen (4.2.15.1) and doesn't work... maybe I do not install it properly, but I tried different ways and latest doesn't load bootanimation.
I attached the zip with the file for HTC Magic/MT3G but couldn't try it.
Did my best with the screen resolution.

I'll try this soon on CE... maybe tonight once I'm home from the office.
The install process is the same... just push it to /data/local?
So I gave it a shot and pushed it to /data/local on CE... it didn't do anything. Well, to be specific, it booted up normally... the push didn't have any effect. Did I need to do anything other then push?
This should be working right after pushing, so either the file or path isnt right.

On a MT3G, the boot animation is in framework-res.apk(then /assets/images/).
I think there is no way on the latest Cyanogen to replace it... maybe the next version will open the bootscreen. Maybe not.
ADB push it to bootanimation path (*):
adb devices
adb remount
adb push bootanimation.zip <bootanimation_path>
Now to test if it worked:
adb shell bootanimation
<press ctrl+c to quit>
OR:
store on root of SD card
open root explorer make sure to make R/W
go to SDCard and copy file
navigate to bootanimation path (*)
rename bootanimation.zip to something else (bootanimation1.zip)
paste file and rename bios_bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.zip, if necessary
exit root explorer
reboot phone
Profit = Enjoy Bios boot animation!

The right path for your bootanimation differs between devices and even ROMs, so it is hard to list the right one for every setup.
However, you should be able to track down the right one by looking for an existing bootanimation.zip using Root Explorer or ADB.
Most likely it will be one of the following:
/system/media (try this first)
/system/customize (some Evo ROMS seem to use this one)
/data/local (should work an nearly all ROMs, as long as there is no bootanimation on /system)
Choose the one you want to install and see 1.
Just flash via recovery or extract the bootanimation.zip and see 1.
Just install via MIUI theme manager.
