Can someone post pic samples with LB and UB and how much the quality decreases?
Also if I unlock the bootloader and relock it after restoring TA, would Bionz work again normally?

And will relock without ta be equal to relock with ta?

wait whaaat...I thought Sony fixed the ULB camera and it's the same as the locked BL one now?

This is from mine with unlocked... Zoom in and compare the noise with your own... :)

Sorry that I can't give a picture from a UB and lb but I compared it to a friends picture during day and not that much difference...

Both were taken with superior auto.

i can't see anithing. But for a really comparsion we have to make the same photo in the same light after few minutes or the test doesn't have any result. If anyone can do this we can see if there is any difference. Maybe @showlyshah can help us

You should be able to get a feel of the quality... There is a difference but it is not major :)

But yes.. Two pictures in same environment would be better :)

I can notice a noticable difference in noise levels in my photos in lowlight with UBL vs LB. It's quite a bit worse. In daytime it's not that much different, but in lowlight it's evident that it's not as good. I might relock my bootloader now, the camera is a really important feature to me :\

Even after relocking the BL you already lost your DRM keys like what happened to mine, so I think the result will be the same.. are there photo samples in lowlight to compare between UB & LB ???

I got confirmation from another person in the Unlock bootloader thread that if you restore your TA backup you get back BIONZ. I already relocked my bootloader and there is an immediate difference in camera quality. Unfortunately I don't have any low light shots...i was too stupid to take some before relocking :\ . I do have some outdoor shots though that I'll compare with tomorrow.

Then you're out of luck, sorry. The TA backup should've been done when the bootloader was locked, you lose it when you unlock the BL. You can still lock your BL without your TA but none of your DRM keys come back.

Here's a quick comparison between unlocked bootloader vs locked bootloader in outdoor light. Overall there's not much difference, but LB is slightly better, especially in the colors and sometimes in sharpness. Where there's a big difference is in low light, UBL pictures have horrible sharpness and noise, LB is much better but unfortunately I don't have comparisons for those...


First image is unlocked bootloader, 2nd image is locked bootloader. Using 8mp superior auto for both. Time is slightly different, so slightly different sun angles but not by much.

    ok, here is my 5 cents...
    i do belive the quality goes down a little on UB, first picture is SA mode LB, second is manual mode LB, third is SA on UB and forth is manual on UB.

    i think the first two are better, plus the SA came out better than the manual ? thats on 681, but i think camera didn't change between 757 and 681.

    i use TWRP to restore locked and unlocked bootloaders so i did all 4 pictures at the same time.









    try to zoom in on the white flower box on the top left of the picture, gives a good idea about sharpness.

    I did the same test with my Z1 and did not detect differences in the pictures. But do your tests and tell us later!

    Anyway, I sent emails to Sony asking about it. As soon as they respond I post here.

    The reason why the camera doesn't work before on Xperia Z1 on unlocked bootloader because the viewfinder shares the same decoder library as used in video playback which utilizes a part of DRM feature hence it won't work. Doing a little logcat at that time shows the error clearly.

    If bionz was the problem that time the camera app could have worked since bionz is only used when you take a picture not while the camera is idle or whatelse :)

    Do take note that AR Effect works that time because it has it's own seperate viewfinder libs for inserting the AR functions.

    BIONZ is working, however in unlocked bootloader it does not work the same way it does with locked bootloader.

    I insist there's a difference in picture quality. To prove it, I took a total of 12 shots. 6 shots of the same subject in a row in 15mp manual mode with 400ISO in UBL, and then I relocked my BL, restored my TA and took the same 6 shots again in the same conditions merely 10 minutes later.

    I took 6 shots so that the 'random picture quality difference' is negated.

    Here are the pictures. I can provide originals as well if people wish. I uploaded to imgur because it's easier for me.

    At first glance, they look similar. HOWEVER, if you look into the dark part of the images, you will notice something different in UBL compared to LB. There is a lot more 'digital noise' present in ULB pictures. What I'm talking about is random green/red pixels in the dark area that the BIONZ processor (or whatever else) removes in locked bootloader state.

    EXAMPLE 1

    Left is LB, right is UBL. You can notice the difference immediately in the blacks of my PS3. There is noise present in the UBL part that is NOT present in the LB part. Picture quality is NOT compromised, both are about equal sharpness, however LB looks considerably better because of the lack of 'digital noise'.

    Again you can see a greenish hue on my heater with some of that noise that is not present on the left LB picture.

    Look at the blacks of my HP box. Again there is that random green/red noise on the UBL pictures that isn't present in the LB picture. LB picture is also slightly sharper but that could be a coincidence.

    This isn't a one time occurrence.. This 'digital noise' exists in ALL of the 6 UBL shots I took, and it is NOT present in my LB shots. In daylight the difference is negligible, but in low light the difference is evident. That noise reduction that occurs, whether it be through BIONZ or whatever else, is not present in UBL shots. This results in lower picture quality especially in low light. I don't know what is removed, but there is a definite difference between the two.
