Would it be acceptable to copy only log parts with norefresh-log in it? And of course some lines above and beyond the log passage?

Regards :)

Doctrin, I don't see anything wrong in these logs. In fact, it seems the NoRefresh is being activated sometimes (don't know if at automatic mode).

Your problem is just with the automatic mode but the other modes (manual and gestures) work? I can only suggest to try some other app (ie, any PDF reader), restart the service (use the checkbox at settings) and increasing the "auto activate time window" value. Obviously, you need to check "auto activate when scrolling" setting.

Your help is appreciated :).

Everything done, several time, no help.

Another stupid question: is there anyone using it without multitouch?

additional simple mod?

hi mars !

it seems to me that is may be good idea to
  • add buttons (+/-) in the top left of the screen to be able to compensate manually for changes of contrast in vid/game.
  • add some automatic contrast compensator. ? would somehow watch number of black pixels and try to maintain 50% black of the screen? There probably is some existing algorithm for this.

what do you think?

add to auto-constrast no-refresh

do you think that the second option is possible? proper algorithm could i think do really good job. althought it would be best to combine both ideas - to have these buttons for fine tuning of some parameter of the algorithm equivallent to current contrast settings (like percentage of black pixels on the screen)

this could really finaly make nook a tablet equivallent. however dont know wheather you are able to do this

Just want to update my case.

I updated the b&n firmware to 1.1 with no success in getting the scroll/animation detection to work.

unfortunately

:-(

Edit: So finally its working, had to de-/activate it several times, deactivate tap-gestures (with auto not simultanely possible) and increased time window a little bit.
I did the excactly same procedures with my old firmware :D . Strange

NoRefresh works very good on my nook, always activating when needed BUT! My contrast controls are very hard to access. I do sequence of 4 taps and maybe 1 out of 50 times the controls will appear. Is there a reason why they are difficult to make appear? I don't think I had this problem with the older version (without all the settings) Hope someone can help :)

I have just one tiny request. It often flickers all the time, say when Opera is changing webpages, especially if it loads the page very slowly.
Is there a possibility to integrate a gesture to hinder norefresh to deactivate itself?

Say you change the page and the screen rendering gets recognized and you rest your finger on the screen. It gets the touch signal and uses this Information to delay the deactivation as long as you touch the screen.

regards :)

Nice to see that you finally have it working. :victory:

AFAIK, Android doesn't allow your app to monitor global gestures (except single taps), unless you also capture them (i.e, Opera wouldn't see them). This should be implemented at kernel level, which is difficult.

As a workaround, you might disable "Auto deactivate" or increase its timeout.

---------- Post added at 07:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:39 PM ----------

Attending some requests, I have improved contrast control:
- Automatic contrast when activating NoRefresh, according to total "brightness" of the screen (simple algorithm). This should ask you for root permission.
- Also supports manual setting in specific situations (customizable).

Download new version at first page

nice!

I really like implemention of anto-contrast. Still is there posilibility to add adjustable parameter to the algorithm? after testing it, it still seems to me like good idea :)
thx

Hi and thanks for this amazing app it just completety changed my experience of the Nook and opened new horizons.

I have some (minor) trouble with the contrast though : while reading a book in ezpdf I set the contrast manually when activating the app (taps) but if I want to see the pictures correctly, I need a contrast setting that is a bit too high for the text display (text quality is not that good with higher contrast) so I kinda need to deactivate the app and reactivate it to get the contrast settings every time there's a picture.

so my questions are : do you have a way to set a different contrast ratio for pictures and text within the same document?
or, if that's not possible, is there some way to adjust contrast while the norefresh app is running whitout leaving the reader app?

I don't understand why you would need to leave the reader app. If you set contrast setting to "Appear always", the contrast controls will appear every time NoRefresh is activated. So, for instance, you could disable NoRefresh by gesture or pressing the n button twice and next time you activate it, you can readjust contrast.

Personally, I find that having one of the five B&Ns shortcuts (customized via NookTouchTools) set to NoRefresh is more convenient for fast switching than gestures. You could also see if automatic activation and deactivation works for you, but it may be not very accurate.

No I don't need to exit the app, I was just speaking hypothetically. Ok the customized B&N button thing sounds like what I need, but I can't find NookTouchTools anywhere, where do I get it? (I have Nook Colour tools, but not nook touch)

The new version fixed the problem I had with getting the contrast controls to appear. Now there are plenty of contrast buttons to go around. It's raining contrast buttons.

Hey I'm relatively new here. Just got my nook and rooted it. Honestly this seems to good to be true what are the downsides to using this? I can't believe all ereaders need to refresh and a quick install makes it so it doesn't. Not doubting you, just wondering what are/if there are any downsides :)

I have started NookTouchTools and associated the shop B&N button with "Launch Application" and then selected norefresh app, I have try with the the gesture on and off, with the auto deactivate on and off, with auto activate on and off, in anycase the norefresh and 1 bit mode doesn't start, pressing the associated B&N button , doing the tap for the gesture, auto activate norefresh...
NoRefresh is running but doesn't switch to the 1 bit mode, the older version of norefresh was working.

I have a Nook Touch 1.1 firmware version with the TouchNooter 2.1.31.

No I don't need to exit the app, I was just speaking hypothetically. Ok the customized B&N button thing sounds like what I need, but I can't find NookTouchTools anywhere, where do I get it? (I have Nook Colour tools, but not nook touch)

It's probably something that I'm doing wrong, but I cannot get norefresh to work for me.

I'm using a nook simple touch bnrv300 rooted with the latest version of touchnooter, and I'm running 1.1.2

Here's how I installed norefresh:

Opened opera mini on my nook, navigated to this thread, downloaded norefreshtoggle.apk. I opened and installed the file
once downloaded.

I have two icons, norefresh, and norefresh settings (or something to that effect) on my desktop.

No matter my settings, tapping to enable/disable norefresh never works.

If I go into settings and white list an app to always use it for that app, it tries to work.

I'll get messages saying that norefresh has been granted su permissions, and the screen will flash occasionally and it
will display the way it's supposed to with norefresh enabled, but then it will just flash back to the default.

Sometimes it will stay in norefresh mode for a few seconds, long enough for me to scroll a webpage, before going back to default.

It seems like it's trying to work, but just can't stay enabled.

I've also tried turning off the auto contrast stuff and toggling other options, but nothing seems to help.

Also tried installing/uninstalling/rebooting after changes, etc.

I'm not very familiar with android at all, so this may just be something silly that I'm doing wrong, or overlooking.

But the norefresh thing is really awesome, so I'd love to get it working.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Since the Nook A2 mode seems to be overridden when switching foreground activity, I've tried another approach with a background service which toggles A2 mode when requested by user. This way, the foreground activity isn't switched and "fast refreshing" mode works (until you change activity).

This fast refresh mode (called A2) is only possible because it uses only 1-bit depth, i.e, just black on white, meaning you can't see grayscale pictures but it's good enough for black text on white background and scrolling. I have not "created it", it is built-in from the device (you can test using the stock reader, it is activated when holding a page button). What I implemented is a way to activate and deactivate it at user will from inside any app.

Thanks to dairyknight for his N2EpdController class, which made this possible.
Thanks to bardo8430 for bringing the idea.
Thanks to AndroSS source code for screenshots used in automatic contrast.

    Changelog:
01/Mar: Now when you launch the app and it is already running, it will activate NoRefresh mode. So you can also use an activation shortcut to the app using NookTouchTools (i.e. B&N's book icon at top left corner).
02/Mar: Improve activation shortcut to perform toggle between modes. Tap gestures aren't needed anymore (use "-noGestures" apk version if you don't want them).
04/Mar: Got rid of initial ghosting by redrawing the screen after activating A2.
04/Mar (2): Minor improvement of removing ghosting at screen edges.
12/Mar (Beta): Now you can adjust contrast in A2 mode. Images shouldn't be dark or black anymore if you raise the contrast a bit.

    22/May: Completely redesigned version 2.0:
    - Several options can be customized via settings screen.
    - NoRefresh can be toggled by manual app shortcut, tap gestures or automatically according to screen animation (new).
    - New App Whitelist to avoid unwanted activation in specific apps (except for manual mode).
    - Background service can be launched at boot.
    - Small improvements and tweaks.
    - Custom app icon (finally :D)

06/Jun: Fix crash on empty whitelist

    08/Jul: (Version 2.1)
    - Automatic contrast when activating NoRefresh, according to total "brightness" of the screen (simple algorithm). This should ask you for root permission.
    - Also supports manual setting in specific situations (customizable).
    - Fix possible crash at startup.

    26/Jul: (Version 2.2)
    - Fix contrast setting behaviour

    06/Dec:
    - Alternative version with fixed compatibility for FW 1.2.0 available at https://github.com/marspeople/NoRefreshToggle/downloads

    Hi,

I am trying to put a code together to control the refresh behavior of the e-ink screen. The final goal is to have a drop-in library for app developers to help making their app more e-ink friendly.

The code works already for the PRS-T1, but needs a different driver for the Nook Touch (N2EpdController included).

My one and only beta tester gets the famous "There is a problem parsing the package" error. Pls find enclosed the sources.

I would be grateful if someone could fix possible Eclipse setting or other errors.

    Hi,

I finally surpassed all my laziness and improved NoRefresh app as I been wanting to do for a long time. Check it out at the first page.

I've just implemented a new feature I think you'll enjoy.

Now you can adjust contrast setting for the NoRefresh/1-bit/A2 mode. Images shouldn't be dark or black anymore if you raise the contrast a bit. Actually, thanks to the B&W dithering to imitate grey, they may look nice too! (see video)

This is a more "beta" version, you can download at first page post.

Now let's hope someone can make this thing also play videos. :p

    Hi!
    -your app is nice!
-however i have sometimes problem with unexpected deactivation of norefresh. is there any chance of using nook touch tools of color tools to map for example small book icon on the top-left to start your app and toggle the no-refresh?

    thx

Since I cannot avoid those automatic deactivations of NoRefresh by the system, this may be useful.

I've just implemented it, so now when you launch the app and it is already running, it will activate NoRefresh mode. So you can just use a shortcut to the app using NookTouchTools to activate.

I will add it to the first page post.
