Try wiping cache and dalvik cache via recovery...

edit:
if still doesn't work, make a backup and replace system apps with the attached apps...
hoping it works!

Yes - initially had wiped all cache the first time, but did it again and then re-flashed the deodex ROM and cleared again prior to reboot - but still same problem occurred.

Problem is = click on NFC from a widget or toggle or through the settings menu and when the application tries to start - it fails.

So I then booted into CWM - cleared cache once again and then restarted the phone and copied the .apk etc but as soon as I clicked on NFC it comes up with "unfortunately, NFC service has stopped" this then loops continuously and I cant figure out how to stop this even from re-boot and hard reset - it loops right at start up so had to hard reset and then install the backed up ROM through CWM.

If you have any further suggestions I'm glad to try them - I'm not sure if the sequence order I'm doing things in makes a difference - should I have copied the apk etc and then re-booted and cleared cache again before selecting NFC?

Update......

I wasnt sure if the sequence order made a difference so I flashed back the initial stock ROM and then cleared both cache sections then re-flashed the deodex ROM and again cleared both cache sections and then rebooted the phone - the rainbow colors on the boot screen took a very long time this time (about 9 x instead of 3-4) and then the system started Optimizing application as usual............After start-up I then copied the apk's etc to system app folder and then re-booted phone and then clicked on NFC = the result was the loop on NFC unable to start : / bummer.

Hope this helps.....

Just wondering - do I need to push the apk through adb to keep permissions maybe? as per this post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...s#post33797417

?

I did try to change permissions originally but couldn't work it out - it was late and my brain wasn't really up to it.

Update - changed permissions through Root explorer and copied apk into system/app on stock ROM and same error occurs.

Further Update:
Went back to stock ROM - copied nfc-handover.apk and Nfc.apk and Nfc.odex to external SD - then flashed the deodex ROM and can the annoying failed NFC startup loop but managed to copy the files from SD to system/app and replace them - rebooted and NFC restart loop now gone and so is all the NFC stuff : )

With a deodexed ROM you can change the quick panel toggle menu from stock and currently I'm playing around with getting NFC to work without screen on or lock screen off.
