If your chromecast has been setup and running on your wifi for more then 24 hours, the chances it updated are extremely high.

you want to dd the 'flashcast-1.0.bin' file inside the .zipyou need to write the .bin file contained in the FlashCast .zip, this confused me a little, I dd the flashcast-1.0.zip to the flash drive?
Do I need to unzip the first?
dd if=/home/sam/file.bin of=/dev/sdi
/dev/sdi is my flash drive, and it has been fromated, sorry for the confusion.
yes, extract 'flashcast-1.0.bin' from the 'flashcast-1.0.zip' file, dd 'flashcast-1.0.bin' to the flash drive, then boot the chromecast from the flash drive.Do I need to unzip the first?

To check, you can plug it in (but not set it up), and check its "Build" in the Chromecast app. Alternatively, you can simply try to boot FlashCast on it. If it's patched, nothing bad will happen; the USB drive will simply fail to boot.
So I got the new one today and want to check the build number without setting it up. Only thing I can do is start the setup process, then it connects to my wifi. YIKES!(bailout) When will it show me the build #? I know where it is after setup, but that does me no good.. Oh, and I don't get my powered otg for another week to just try flashing.
The easiest solution is probably to just disconnect your router from the internet before going through the normal setup process. Once you've checked the build number, you can factory reset the Chromecast so it doesn't automatically connect again.
@cammykool has been hoping that since Google forced 12840 upon him. He has given up hope.
So does this mean it will be possible to get at the hard-coded Google DNS server in the Chromecast for those of us wanting better Netflix outside of the US?
So by using this, OTA updates would no longer be pushed to the device and you wouldn't get new features/fixes, correct?
If so, how does one keep root and still get the latest updates?

How do I know if I have A Chromecast with a vulnerable bootloader ?
The problem is Windows' poor handling of flash drive partitions. @ddggttff3 figured out how to force Windows to reformat a FlashCast drive from the command line the other day. When he wakes up tomorrow, I'll see if I can get him to post instructions. Sorry for the inconvenience.
diskpart
list disk
select disk * (where * is your jump drive disk number)
clean
convert mbr
create partition primary
